In 1903, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen set out with a small expedition to traverse the legendary and dangerous Northwest Passage. That is the Arctic waterway that connects the North Atlantic and North Pacific Ocean well above Canada in the country’s Arctic Archipelago. It took Amundsen and company three years to navigate the deadly waterway. But in 1906 they accomplished the task and broke new ground for mariners the world over. While his achievement was a landmark, it wasn’t the first time that anyone had tried to make their way through the cold, icy waters of the Northwest Passage. Nearly six decades earlier British explorer and Captain in the British Royal Navy Sir John Franklin set off with 128 men to try and make their way through the waterway. Needless to say that voyage has since gone on to become known as one of the worst tragedies in naval history. Now thanks to PBS and PBS Distribution audiences get a whole new look at Franklin’s doomed expedition in a new episode of PBS’ hit science-based series NOVA.

PBS and PBS Distribution officially released today NOVA: Arctic Ghost Ship today. The program outlines the ill-fated journey of Franklin and the men that accompanied him. It also outlines the search and eventual discovery in 2014 of the Erebus, one of two ships–the other being the Terror–used in the attempted journey. It follows the efforts of the Canadian explorers who set out to try and locate the final resting place of Franklin’s ships, and get an idea of the fate of both ships and their men. From dead ends and deadly ice slowing their efforts, the scientists do end up finding the Erebus more than 160 years after it sank. It sheds light on what might have happened to Franklin and his men, revealing a very dark fate for many of them. NOVA: Arctic Ghost Ship is available now on DVD. Audiences can check out a trailer for the episode online now via YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsscnBW9NOE.
