Dropkick Murphys will kick off the new year with a new album and tour.
The veteran Massachusetts-based punk outfit announced recently that it will release its full-length studio recording 11 Short Stories of Pain and Glory on January 6th. Unlike each of its previous recordings, this offering was recorded in El Paso, TX. Founding member and bassist Ken Casey explained the band’s reasoning for the change in a recent interview.
“To me, the whole story starts with the fact we actually agreed to go – and then went – to Texas. Because we’ve never left home to make a record,” Casey said. “As everyone’s lives have become crazier and busier with kids and families, it’s gotten harder to buckle down at home. We decided to leave Boston, go down literally to the middle of nowhere and lock ourselves in a room.”
11 Short Stories of Pain and Glory was influenced in part by the band’s experience working with The Claddagh Fund, a charity that the band established in 2009. The charity helps support addiction recovery as well as children’s and veterans’ organizations. The band’s experiences working with that charity are reflected in the album’s songs including ‘Rebels With A Cause,’ which focuses on children who have been “given up on, left behind by a system that has written them off as hopeless.” ‘Paying My Way’ is another one of the album’s standout works. This song focuses on overcoming addiction and the positives that come from overcoming addiction.
Along with its songs focused on its experiences with the Claddagh Fund, the band also pays tribute to the victims of the Boston bombings in ‘4-15-13,’ a deeply emotional piece. The band members personally visited victims of the 2013 bombing and got to know the victims. Casey explained the writing process that stemmed from those visits.
“Since that day, we felt like not taking the challenge to write a song about what we all went through would be taking the coward’s way out,” he said. We put more importance on writing that piece of music than anything we’ve ever done, because if your’e going to touch that day, it has to be done right. We went through so many emotions with that whole experience, as did everyone in Boston. It changed the city forever.”
