‘Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie’ Re-Issue Is A Wild Visual High For Viewers

The screwball comedy is a lost art in today’s mainstream movie industry.  As a matter of fact, it is a lost art in the movie industry in whole.  At one point, great classic screwball comedies such as It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Some Like It Hot and other similar stories once made the movie industry great.  Today, it seems like overly dramatic works and brainless shoot-‘em-up action flicks run things across the board.  Thankfully, Shout! Factory will soon give audiences an alternative to that endless sea of cookie-cutter theatrical and home releases when it re-issues the classic 1980 stoner/screwball comedy Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie on Blu-ray.

For those who have never seen this completely outrageous production, it takes the screwball comedy to a whole new level.  Put simply, the hybrid of its screwball and stoner elements puts it into a category all its own; one that many have tried to emulate, but that few have succeeded at copying.  It is not a movie for children due to its drug and sexual content.  Because it is also its own brand of screwball/stoner comedy, it is also very much a niche production.  Even with that in mind, it is still a movie that any comedy fan should see at least once especially now that it will be re-issued next week, if only for that content, which is one of its key elements.  The movie’s story is just as important to note in examining the movie’s overall presentation and will be discussed later.  The bonus interview with Cheech Marin about the movie’s making rounds out its most important elements.  Each element is, obviously important in its own right.  All things considered, they make Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie one of this year’s top new DVD/BD re-issues.

Shout! Factory’s upcoming re-issue of the classic stoner/screwball comedy Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie is one of the most outrageous offerings of its type.  Few, if any, movies before or after have ever been able to equal the level of comedic output produced by this movie.  That is due in no small part to its content.  From raunchy bathroom humor to full-on adult jokes about drugs and sex to a completely out of this world visit from a UFO and more, the content in this movie hits on so many different comedic elements.  At the same time, the rapid fire delivery of all of the jokes (which are clearly products of their time) works alongside that vast range of comedic elements to leave viewers wondering what the duo will do next throughout the course of the movie’s 95-minute run time.  On the downside, there is so much going on that by the time the movie reaches its final act, it does have a slightly negative impact on the movie’s pacing.  Luckily though, that doesn’t happen until late in the movie’s run.  Keeping that in mind, the type and amount of content presented throughout Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie, while obviously not meant for children (and likely won’t reach everyone) makes it worth at least one watch as well as one of this year’s top new DVD/BD re-issues.  It is just one of the elements that makes this re-issue such a surprise hit.  The movie’s story is another key element that deserves to be discussed in examining the movie’s overall presentation.

The content at the heart of Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie forms the foundation of this movie’s entertainment.  One part stoner flick and one part screwball comedy, the combination of those elements’ content makes this raucous comedy one of the most original of its kind.  It is only one of the key elements that makes this movie stand so starkly apart from its counterparts past and present.  Its story is just as important to discuss in examining its overall presentation as its content.  The story, as Marin notes in the re-issue’s new bonus interview, may seem like it’s all over the place at first glance.  However, a closer watch shows it actually does follow a structured continuum of sorts.  What is really interesting is that though Marin provides the bonus interview (which will be discussed shortly), Tommy Chong is in fact the movie’s real star.  That is because in this story, viewers go along with Tommy and his friend Dwayne “Red” Mendoza (obviously Marin plays Mendoza here) while Cheech waits back at the pair’s house for his girlfriend Donna (Evelyn Guerrero—Blood In, Blood Out; The Toolbox Murders; …And The Earth Did Not Swallow Him) to come by.  Every now and then, audiences are taken back to check on Cheech during the course of the movie’s second and third act.  But by and large, Tommy Chong is the real star of this movie as he and “Mendoza” ride around town smoking lots of marijuana and getting into all kinds of mischief.  The content of those misadventures couples with the story to make the movie its own visual high for viewers.  Again, it won’t appeal to everyone, but those elements together will definitely entertain its key audiences.  Keeping this in mind, the movie’s story is not the last of its key elements.  The bonus interview with Marin that comes with the movie’s re-issue rounds out its most important elements.

The story and content presented in Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie are both pivotal to its overall presentation.  Both in themselves and collectively, they create a visual and cinematic experience unlike anything that has come before and after.  They are not its only important elements.  The bonus interview with Cheech Marin included in the movie’s upcoming re-issue rounds out its most important elements.  Marin discusses in his interview, which only runs maybe 10 minutes at the most, the approach that he and Tommy Chong took in writing the movie (yes, they wrote the movie’s story and it shows), battling with other creative forces to keep certain scenes in, the duo’s own career history and even that of one Paul Reubens (yes, Pee-Wee Herman) who makes an appearance in this movie and so much more.  The interview isn’t in-depth per se.  However, it does offer audiences new and old alike a new view on the movie, its creation, and what makes it one of those movies that stands the test of time.  When this is considered along with the movie’s story and its overall content, viewers will agree that regardless of their familiarity with the movie, it is unlike any other stoner or even screwball comedy out there and deserves at least one watch.  All things considered, it is one of this year’s top new DVD/BD re-issues.

Shout! Factory’s upcoming re-issue of Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie is one of this year’s top new DVD/BD re-issue.  Scheduled for release next Tuesday, June 13, it is unlike any other stoner and/or screwball comedy that has come before or after.  That is obvious in the movie’s outrageous content (which is only fitting for adult audiences) and its equally outrageous, yet somehow structured story.  The bonus interview with star Cheech Marin about the movie rounds out its most important elements.  Each element is important to the movie in its own right, as has been discussed.  All things considered, they make Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie a surprisingly refreshing break from the endless sea of dramas and mindless action flicks currently filling America’s theaters.  Considering this, they combine to make the movie one of the year’s top new DVD/BD re-issues.  It can be pre-ordered online now direct via Shout!
