ESPN and its family of networks will celebrate college football’s history in a very big way in 2019.

Network officials made the announcement Thursday in a press release that revealed the ESPN networks will spend all of 2019 celebrating what will then be college football’s 150th anniversary.  The release states the networks will spend the year’s first seven and a half months presenting content “examining and celebrating” the sport’s rich history.  It adds the examination and celebration will be done through presentation of the games, traditions, developments and people that shaped the game.

The content provided over the noted time span will be presented on ESPN’s digital, mobile and social outlets.  The next 150 days that follows, which lead up to Jan. 13, 2020, will feature a vast range of stories from college football’s history.  The whole effort will be headed by longtime college athletics administrator and former Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg.

Weiberg said of the effort that he was looking forward to the celebration and being part of the anniversary.

“I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to coordinate a nationwide celebration of college football’s 150th anniversary in 2019,” Weiberg said.  “It’s wonderful to have great partners like ESPN to showcase the rich history and traditions of college football while also putting a spotlight on the opportunities it provides young people to pursue a college degree and to develop the skills needed to succeed in life after football.”

John Skipper, ESPN President shared Wieberg’s anticipation.

“We are extraordinarily proud to celebrate a sport that has such a great influence on numerous generations,” Skipper said.  “Our year-long exploration will showcase college football’s rich history, which is indelibly rooted in the fabric of American culture, and explore the current and future state of the sport.  Fans can expect a comprehensive storytelling approach, presented creatively across the breadth of the ESPN platform.”
