Musician, composer and producer Mark de Clive-Lowe premiered the first single from his upcoming album, Heritage, this week.
‘Memories of Nanzenji‘ debuted Friday. The song is a gentle, flowing composition that will appeal to fusion jazz fans, especially those of the likes of Yellowjackets.
de Clive-Lowe, who is half-Japanese and half-New Zealander, said in a recent interview that Heritage, which is scheduled for release Feb. 8 via Ropeadope, that the album and its title hold special significance.
“Heritage is the idea of transmitting from the past to the future — knowing more about who we are and where we’re going by understanding where we come from,” de Clive-Lowe said. “It’s about identity, and one’s place in the world.”
He added, “I was raised bi-culturally, and as time goes on, the more I appreciate hwo much I owe to my roots. Japan in my spiritual and ancestral home — the connection I feel there is so visceral, and has shaped much of my life, largely without me even being fully aware of its influence. this music is me openly embracing and interpreting what Japan means, fells like and sounds like, to me.”
‘Memories of Nanzenji’ is an interpretation of a visit that de Clive-Lowe made to the historic Tokyo temple and its gardens. ‘Bushido,’ which comes early in the album’s run, is a musical commentary on the famed “Samurai Code.” ‘Akatombo’ is an arrangement of a traditional Japanese composition.
