Nonpoint Debuts ‘When Doves Cry’ Video

Nonpoint opened the new week with a new video.

The band premiered the video for its cover of Prince’s ‘When Doves Cry‘ Monday. The video’s premiere comes more than a month after the band premiered the song by itself. The song is available to stream and download here.

Nonpoint’s new video is a relatively minimalist presentation. It opens with front man Elias Soriano on camera performing his part and blends that with footage of drummer Robb Rivera adding his subtle touches to the song. As the song reaches its peak, the black and white presentation expands into full color and presents the band performing the song in a sound stage, complete with solid white backdrop.

Where Prince’s original is a full-on 80s-influenced song in its arrangement, Nonpoint’s rendition takes the song’s lyrics (which seem to present a subject who is talking to another about their broken relationship) into full account with the mood and energy that it establishes.

The brooding approach to the verses do well to help translate the pain and frustration felt by the song’s subject while the choruses bring that frustration and pain to a peak each time. That emotion is heightened through the song’s overall instrumentation, enhancing the song’s presentation even more.

Front man Elias Soriano talked about the band’s take on the song in a prepared statement.

“Our fans throughout the years have always had a quiet romance with the songs we like to cover,” the statement reads. “Seeing that our biggest showing in that category, our cover of Phil Collins ‘In The Air Tonight,’ was a suggestion from a friend and fan of the band, we thought it only fitting we let all our fans have a chance to throw their hats in the ring this time. So in the middle of a global pandemic, we threw up a bracket style voting tournament with a list of contenders from Metallica to DMX. As fans voted over a few weeks, it was exciting to watch it go from 16 songs to the final two, Metallica’s – Nothing Else Matters vs Prince’s – When Doves Cry. When they chose Prince, the real work began. We went through version after version. We knew we had to do it justice in the biggest way we could as tribute to Prince and still make it Nonpoint. I’m happy to report from initial response among the few who have heard it is exciting and we look forward to our fans singing it for years to come.”
