Dropkick Murphys debuted the video for its latest single this week.

The band premiered the lyric video for its cover of the timeless protest song, ‘We Will Overcome’ Tuesday. The video features the band performing the classic protest song and blends that footage with vintage footage of civil rights figures and people singing the song. Meanwhile, the song’s lyrics appear on screen as the visualization plays out.

Dropkick Murphys’ take on ‘We Shall Overcome’ takes the band’s familiar Celtic punk leaning and adapts it to the song’s more familiar roots. The presentation is another infectious work from Dropkick Murphys. It is featured in the brand new digital-only re-issue of the band’s latest album, Turn Up That Dial.

Originally written by the Rev. Charles Albert Tindley in 1900 and titled I’ll Overcome Some Day,’ the song was renamed ‘We Shall Overcome Some Day’ in 1945 by Zilphia Horton. Horton also changed some of its lyrics along the way. In 1950, the song that became ‘We Shall Overcome’ was first recorded and became the anthem of the civil rights movement among African-Americans nationwide in August 1963.
