Audiences Of All Ages Had Lots Worth Watching On TV And Streaming in 2022

Courtesy: PBS Distribution

Hollywood’s major movie studios offered audiences little to enjoy this year both in regard to theatrical and streaming content.  This year’s crop of new cinematic presentations has just been more of the same prequels, sequels, reboots, and movies based on actual events and books.  The last of those categories – the movies based on actual events and books – change so much from the source material that they are really that unworthy of watching and always have been.  Anyone that wants the real stories behind those movies based on actual events would do better watching PBS’ American Experience and American Masters series.

Speaking of PBS, PBs is also known for importing shows from overseas that really are so much better than even what major American networks have to offer, as in the case of Endeavour and the surprisingly enjoyable rebooted series, All Creatures Great & Small.  Both those series saw their latest seasons released to DVD and BD this year, and those seasons are included in this year’s list of the year’s top new DVD/BD box sets for grown-ups.  Also on this year’s list is the recently released full series release of Seaquest DSV: The Complete Series.  DC also had a number of notable home releases this year from series, such as Doom Patrol, The Flash, and Lois & Superman, all of which also made it onto this year’s list.

As with each list from Phil’s Picks, this one features the year’s top 10 titles in the given category and five honorable mention titles, for a total of 15 titles.  From dramas to comedies to action and more, this year’s collection of new box sets for grown-up audiences offers so much enjoyment and engagement.  Without any further ado, here is Phil’s Picks 2022 Top 10 New DVD/BD Box Sets For Grown-Ups.

PHIL’S PICKS 2022 TOP 10 NEW DVD/BLU-RAY BOX SETS FOR GROWN-UPS

  1. All Creatures Great & Small: Season 2
  2. Endeavour: Season 8
  3. Seaquest DSV: The Complete Series
  4. Abbott Elementary: Season 1
  5. Star Trek Discovery: Season 4
  6. The Flash: Season 8
  7. Lois & Superman: Season 2
  8. Doom Patrol: Season 3
  9. The Honeymooners Specials: The Complete Collection
  10. Peacemaker: The Complete First Season
  11. Spiderman: Far From Home/Homecoming/No Way Home
  12. James Bond: Daniel Craig 5-Film Collection
  13. Star Trek Lower Decks: Season 2
  14. Halo: Season 1
  15. Titans: Season 3

Grown-ups were not the only audiences who received lots of enjoyable offerings this year in regard to home releases.  Families in general also had lots to like this year in the way of home releases.  Only 10 titles made Phil’s Picks list this year, instead of 10, just because there were not enough new family releases for families.  This year’s field of notable family releases includes the 2022 World Series Collector’s Edition set, The Batman: The Complete Series, and even the complete series run of Ed, Edd, & Eddy.  That Seaquest DSV set is technically family friendly, too, in comparison to so many action shows out there today.  Keeping all of that in mind, here is the list of this year’s top new Family Friendly DVD/BD Box Sets.

PHIL’S PICKS 2022 TOP 10 NEW FAMILY FRIENDLY DVD/BD BOX SETS

  1. The Batman: The Complete Series
  2. The Proud Family Original Series: Anniversary Edition
  3. Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood: Kindness Collection
  4. World Series 2022: Collector’s Edition
  5. Seaquest DSV: The Complete Series
  6. Ed, Edd & Eddy: The Complete Series
  7. Rugrats: Season 1, Volume 1
  8. Kamp Koral: Season 1, Volume 1
  9. The Patrick Star Show: Season 1, Volume 1
  10. Scooby Doo & Guess Who: The Complete Second Season

That is it for this year.  Work is already underway for new titles being released in 2023.  The second season of the Rugrats reboot is due out in March, for instance.  Strange New Worlds: Season 1 is due out around the same time.  Lots of new music, movie, and TV reviews are coming as 2022 gives way to 2023, so stay tuned!

New Independent Albums Helped Make 2022 A Great Year For Music Lovers

Courtesy: C Squared PR

Today’s independent music act could very well be tomorrow’s hit name in the mainstream.  One never knows.  All it takes is the right support from radio and audiences and of course being in the right time and place to make it happen.  Even if an act does not make it to the mainstream masses does not mean said act is not worth hearing.  As a matter of fact, many independent acts are just as good as their mainstream counterparts if not better.  To that end, even they deserve their own attention at each year’s end, and that is why Phil’s Picks provides a list of the year’s top new independent albums each year, too.

This year’s list of top new independent albums bring together independent albums from the worlds of rock, pop, and even jazz, showing just how much great independent music continues to be released even this year.  This year’s list is topped by Indian nu-metal outfit Bloodywood.  The band is joined here by the likes of Mythosphere — which features former members of Fates Warning, Pale Divine, and Beezlefuzz — as well as jazz artist Kevin Cerovich and others.

As with each list from Phil’s Picks, this list features the year’s top 10 new albums plus five additional honorable mentions, for a total of 15 records.  These lists are never easy, so no disrespect is meant to the honorable mention titles.  They deserve just as much credit as the top 10 records considering their overall content.

Keeping that in mind, here without any further ado is Phil’s Picks’ 2022 Top 10 New Independent Albums.

2022 Brought So Much Enjoyable Music From Around The World

Courtesy: Riverboat Records/World Music Network

Music from regions of the world other than America sadly do not get the attention that it deserves.  More often than not, said music only gets attention on public radio.  Audiences who give music from other parts of the world will find that it offers its own unique appeal and in turn grow as true fans of music.  To that end, World Music deserves its own year-ender list just as much as music in any other category.  That list is what is presented here from Phil’s Picks.

This year’s list features music from America, the Caribbean, Isreal, Sweden and other nation around the world.  There is even a record from an artist who is originally from Algeria but currently lives in Switzerland.  Simply put, the sounds of the world offer so much for audiences to appreciate just as much this year as the sounds of every genre across the musical universe.

As with each list from Phil’s Picks, this list features the year’s top 10 albums from the noted category and five additional honorable mention titles, for a total of 15 records.  Each brings its own appeal and honor, so there is no intent to dishonor any one act and title in comparison to the others.  This should be kept in mind.  Without any further ado here is Phil’s Picks’ 2022 Top 10 New World Music Albums.

Diversity Shined Through In 2022’s Field Of New Jazz Albums

Courtesy: Mack Avenue Music

The jazz community was more active this year than in recent memory, or so it seems.  That is because of the number of new albums that Phil’s Picks received this year from various jazz labels and acts.  In all, more than 30 jazz albums in 2022.  That is a much larger number of albums than ever received in the jazz category by Phil’s Picks.  The jazz covered this year ranged from Afro-Latin to big band to more intimate music, meaning there was quite a bit for jazz fans to take in this year, too.

As with each other Phil’s Picks list, this list features the year’s top 10 new albums in the given category and five honorable mention titles, for a total of 15 records.  This list was anything but easy to assemble considering just how many albums were received this year.  No disrespect is meant to any act featured in this list, as each has its own positives.

Without any further ado here is Phil’s Picks 2022 Top 10 New Jazz Albums.

Family Music Deserves More Credit Than It Gets, And This Year’s Top New Family Music Albums Prove Why

Courtesy: Rhyming Porcupine Records

Family music is some of the most underrated content offered to audiences year to year.  If people can get past the stigma that has been created (and is maintained to this day, sadly), they will see for themselves just how much family music has to offer.  The lyrical themes in many family music albums will appeal just as much to grown-ups as to children, believe it or not.  Much of the music that accompanies that far-reaching lyrical content makes for its own appeal, too.  Again, audiences will find this for themselves when they give the music a chance.

This year’s field of new family music albums do just as much to support the noted statements as records released in the past few years or so.  From the rock leanings of Howdytoons’ latest dinosaur-centric record, Dinosaurs & Monsters, to the neo-folk sounds of Martin & Rose Music’s new album, Dear Heart to the wide range of sounds and styles of music from Tom Knight in his new album, Look Both Ways alongside its lyrical content that will appeal to kids, and so many others, this year’s crop of new family music albums offered families much to enjoy.

To that end, Phil’s Picks is offering up the list of this year’s top new Family Music albums.  As with each list, this one offers up the year’s top 10 new albums and five additional honorable mention titles for a total of 15 records.  The honorable mention titles are just as enjoyable as the Top 10 records in their own right, so there is no intent to lessen any one album over the others.  Without any further ado, here is Phil’s Picks 2022 Top 10 New Family Music Albums.

PHIL’S PICKS 2022 TOP 10 NEW FAMILY MUSIC ALBUMS

  1. Tom Knight – Look Both Ways
  2. Eric Herman and the Puppy Dogs – Magic Beans

  13. Triple Rainbow – You Are Magic

Hard Rock, Metal Fans Had A Lot To Like In 2022

Courtesy: C Squared PR

The hard rock and metal community had another strong year in 2022, with dozens of acts releasing new studio recordings.  From established acts to some up-and-comers to even some fledgling acts, bands across the hard rock and metal community offered audiences something to appreciate.  That included new power metal, death metal, nu-metal and general hard rock records.  In other words, 2022 was a very good year for the hard rock and metal community, and Phil’s Picks’ 2022 Top 10 New Hard Rock and Metal Albums list illustrates that clearly.

This year’s list of top new hard rock and metal albums runs across the community with new albums from the likes of Slipknot, Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, Sabaton, and even Amon Amarth.  Topping this year’s list is the debut album from fledgling nu-metal band Bloodywood.  The band has, in the past few years, made a heck of a name for itself through its music and uplifting lyrical themes.  The band’s star has continued to rise ever since it released its debut album, Rakshak early this year, too.  Joining Bloodywood and the other noted bands on this year’s list are also the likes of Machine Head, Master Boot Record, and Lamb of God, too.

As with each list from Phil’s Picks, this list features Phil’s Picks’ top 10 new albums in the given category and five honorable mention titles.  Those honorable mention titles are no less impactful than the top 10 albums.  It is just that hard to really find just 10 records worth noting.  There are that many that are so good.  So, without any further ado, here for your consideration is Phil’s Picks’ 2022 Top 10 New Hard Rock and Metal Albums.

Established Acts Dominate Phil’s Picks 2022 Top New Rock Albums List

Courtesy: earMusic

This year was quite the interesting time for the rock community.  That’s because of the wide range of acts who produced new albums throughout the year.  Queensryche, Skid Row, and Joe Satriani all released their latest albums this year, all of which proved quite successful.  Rock super group Motor Sister also released their debut album, to its own acclaim, as did Slash, Scorpions, and Collective Soul.  Between all of these and so many others, the rock albums released this year gave audiences plenty to appreciate, thus the call for a list of the year’s top new rock albums.

This year’s list of top new rock albums serves as a reminder of all that is so good with the rock industry, proving yet again that as much as certain corporate entities would have people believe, rock is not dead.  Rather it is as alive as ever and as healthy, too.  As in years past, Phil’s Picks presents the top 10 records of the given category and five honorable mention titles for a total of 15 albums.  Those five honorable mentions are no less engaging and entertaining as the other 10.  They just happen to be of their own note.

To that end here for your consideration is Phil’s Picks’ 2022 Top 10 New Rock Albums.

Independent, Established Acts Alike Provided Impressive New EPs In 2022

Courtesy: Sumerian Records

The old year is getting ready to finish once again and make way for a new year that is already starting to see a handful of new releases scheduled.  New material from the likes of Anti-Flag and The Winery Dogs are already scheduled for release in January and February respectively.  Mercury Studios (formerly Eagle Rock Entertainment) also has new archived live recordings on the way from Marvin Gaye and Ella Fitzgerald.  Even the independent music community has lots of stuff planned for next year, including a new release from indie rock band Starcrazy in for them of its new album, Another Day, Another Squalor.  Of course lots more music is sure to be announced in the coming days and weeks, meaning it won’t be long before things already start picking up.

While critics’ new music calendars will start filling up very soon, their 2022 calendars are finally done now that the last days of the year are here.  One category of new music that doesn’t get enough attention from one year to the next is the smallest release, the EP.  That is why this critic has made it a point each year to focus on the recording, which for some acts is a way to test the waters before releasing their debut albums and for others a space filler, for its own year-ender list.

This year’s list of top new EPs touches on a variety of acts.  From independent acts to more established acts, lots of EPs have been released this year.  From Saint Asonia to The Rumjacks to Black Veil Brides and more, acts across the musical universe have released interesting new EPs.  Black Veil Brides’ new EP, The Mourning tops Phil’s Picks list of top new EPs this year.  As with every year past, this list features the top 10 new titles in the given category along with five additional honorable mention titles for a total of 15 records.

Without any further ado, here for your consideration is Phil’s Picks’ 2022 Top 10 New EPs.

‘The Odyssey’ Is A Strong Start For Independent Rock Band Genghis Nash

Courtesy: Golden Robot Records

It goes without saying that first impressions are everything, and for independent rock band Genghis Nash, the band’s recently released debut EP The Odyssey is a positive first impression from the band, which has been working at its craft for more than a dozen years.  That is proven through the musical and lyrical content alike featured throughout the five-song record.  The musical arrangements feature an interesting blend of stoner and southern rock that is sure to engage and entertain audiences.  The uplifting lyrical themes in each of the featured songs pair with the positive vibes of the record’s musical arrangements to make for even more appeal.  The record’s opening number, ‘The Swamp,’ is just one example of how the EP’s overall content comes together to make it appealing.  It will be discussed shortly.  ‘Who Am I To Feel Down,’ the EP’s penultimate entry, shows in its own way, how the record’s overall content joins to make for such appeal and will be examined a little later.  ‘What Will It Be & The Odyssey,’ which closes out The Odyssey is also of note and will also be examined later.  Each song noted is key in its own way to the whole of the presentation here.  When they are considered alongside the record’s two remaining songs, the whole makes The Odyssey easily one more of this year’s top new EPs.

The Odyssey, the debut EP from independent rock band Genghis Nash, is a successful first offering from the band, which has been honing its craft for at least the past 14 years.  That is proven through its featured musical and lyrical content alike, as is shown right from the EP’s outset in the opening number, ‘The Swamp.’  The raucous combination of the drums and guitar that opens the song is a strong start for the EP and the song.  As the song progresses, the fuzz of the guitars and distinct vocal effect, paired with the bass, immediately lends itself to comparison to works from the likes of Clutch, Royal Blood, and other bands of that ilk.  The energy in the song’s arrangement pairs well with its equally uplifting lyrical theme to make for even more enjoyment.

According to information provided about the song, its lyrical theme focuses on the all too familiar topic of overcoming those deeply emotional times in life that can so easily sideline a person.  This is made clear in the song’s lead verse and chorus which state, “For days like this/I learned how to pray/The things that brought me comfort have gone away/No empathy/No quarter given…Hell has opened its gates/You can sit and cry/Or raise your sails and fly/You can either ride and die/Or let it break you and I.”  There is one small portion of that opening line that is difficult to decipher sans lyrics, but the overall noted theme is made clear, even despite that matter.  The theme is made just as clear in the song’s second verse, which states, “I don’t believe I have in me what it takes/This…starts rising when I try to escape/It’s holding down my ankles, knees and my waist/I need a sympathetic wavelength…”  Again, there are items that are difficult to decipher sans lyrics to reference, but even with that lack, the message remains as clear as ever.  This depicts someone battling that sense of self-doubt.  The refrain of the chorus serves once again as that reminder to the self to keep pushing on through that self-doubt.  IT is a message that even in this case, will resonate with a wide range of audiences.  When that refrain joins with the positive energy in the song’s arrangement, the whole makes the song overall a wonderful addition to the EP and just one example of how the record’s overall content makes it worth hearing.

Another example of what makes the EP worth hearing comes a little later in its run in the form of the song, ‘Who Am I To Feel Down.’  As with ‘The Swamp,’ this song tends to focus on that familiar theme of a person’s inner struggle.  That is made clear right from the song’s outset which states, “There many days when it feels impossible to see the light/Not many happy thoughts…But take a look at my clothes/Take a look at my life/Who am I to feel down?”  One could argue that to that extent, this is a continuation of the message presented in ‘The Swamp’ even though it is its own message.  The use of the horns and the keyboard give the song an even more positive vibe a la The Doobie Brothers, making for even more appeal.

‘What Will It Be & The Odyssey’ is yet another example of how The Odyssey’s overall content comes together to make the record engaging and entertaining.  In the case of this song, the musical arrangement is a unique blend of southern rock and stoner in one.  The subtle way in which the two genres are blended together here makes for so much enjoyment.  The bluesy jam session that makes up the song’s second half conjures thoughts, at times, of Pink Floyd, believe it or not.  It is such a soothing performance overall.

According to the information provided, the song’s lyrics are meant to present a message of battling feelings of sadness and depression.  Specifically, the notes state of the theme, “The lyrics describe an anguish brought about from being inert.”  Interestingly enough, it seems to be sung from the vantage point of someone who is fed up with that person who is stuck in place, trying to remind that person that things will be better and to get out of that fun.  This is just this critic’s own interpretation, though.  Either way, the thoughtful theme and presentation thereof pairs with the infectious bass-driven arrangement of ‘What Will It Be’ to make that song stand on its own merits.  The equally moving instrumental ‘The Odyssey’ makes for its own appeal.  All things considered there, the two-part song is yet more proof of what makes The Odyssey in whole so appealing.  When this is considered along with the other songs examined here and with the rest of the record’s songs, the whole makes The EP a fully engaging and entertaining first outing for Genghis Nash.

The Odyssey, the debut EP from independent rock band Genghis Nash, is a strong first outing from the group.  That is especially considering how long the band has been out there working the stages leading up to this record’s release.  The musical and lyrical content alike featured in this record make that clear, as is evidenced in the songs examined here.  When those three songs are considered along with the rest of the record’s works, the whole makes The Odyssey one more of the year’s top new EPs.

The Odyssey is available now through Golden Robot Records.  More information on the record is available along with all of the band’s latest news at https://www.facebook.com/genghisnash.
