New Album Coming This Month From Warn The Duke; Album’s Lead Single, Video Streaming Now

Courtesy: Wiretap Records

Independent rock act Warn The Duke will release its latest album this spring through Wiretap Records.

The band’s new album, All That’s Solid, is scheduled for release March 17. The record will be the band’s first new album in eight years. In anticipation of its release, the band recently premiered the record’s lead single, ‘Anniversaries’ and the song’s video.

The musical arrangement featured in the band’s new single immediately lends itself to comparison to works from the likes of Husker Du and The Clash. Keeping those bands in mind, it also makes sense to make a comparison to Foo Fighters here, considering there are many moments through that band’s catalog that are just as comparable to the aforementioned veteran acts.

No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the news release announcing the release of the album, single and video. The lyrics provided with the song’s video comes across as being rather introspective and contemplative. It finds the song’s subject wondering where life started going bad. That is just this critic’s interpretation.

The video for the band’s new single is a relatively simple presentation. It is a two-part story that on one side features the band performing its new single on a rooftop. The other side finds the band enjoying each other’s company in a bar setting, with some apparent miscommunication going on, but in a semi-comical fashion. It is an interesting presentation in its own right.

In other news, Warn The Duke is scheduled to hold a record release show March 17 in Brooklyn, NY at Our Wicked Lady. Fat Heaven, Something Bitter, and Sadlands are scheduled to serve as support for the show.

Queensryche Debuts Video For New Single, ‘Realms’; New Tour Planned

Courtesy: Century Media Records

Queensryche debuted the video for its latest single this week.

The band premiered the video for its new single, ‘Realms’ Tuesday. The song is featured in the band’s latest album, Digital Noise Alliance.

The video features the band performing its new single on a soundstage as videos play behind the band of fictional politicians and other related imagery meant to help illustrate the song’s lyrical message.

The message in question, is a political commentary, according to a statement from the band.

“This track surrounds the ongoing scandals of politicians and the non-transparent cover-ups trying to save their political careers,” the statement reads.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Realms’ is classic Queensryche from beginning to end. From the vocal delivery of front man Todd LaTorre (who to this day still sounds so much like the band’s former front man Geoff Tate) to the rich, heavy sound of the bass and guitars together, to even the tightness of the snare. The production that went into the song is to thank for bringing out the best in that sound and stylistic approach.

In other news, Queensryche is scheduled to launch a new tour schedule to continue its support of Digital Noise Alliance. Marty Friedman and Trauma are scheduled to serve as support for the tour, which is scheduled to launch Friday in Orlando, FL and to run through April 16 in St. Petersburg, FL.

Buster Williams Offers Listeners A Completely Engaging, Entertaining Record In ‘Unalome’

Courtesy: Smoke Sessions Records

It goes without saying that throughout the course of his decades long career, bassist Buster Williams has made quite the name for himself and then some within the jazz community.  From working with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Thelonious Monk, and Art Blakey to serving as a band leader himself ever since 1975, Williams has more than made his place among the elite of the jazz community, and with good reason.  This past Friday, he continued to carve out that place within the genre’s upper echelon when he released his latest album, Unalome through Smoke Sessions Records.  Composed of eight songs, the 51-minute record offers a fully engaging blend of originals and covers, all of which are accented by the professional performances of Williams and the performers Williams assembled for the recording.  The songs featured here present such a wide range of emotions and moods along with equally impressive musicianship from the collective.  One of the most notable of the originals featured here is the record’s midpoint, ‘In The Middle of a Rainbow.’  This song will be discussed shortly.  The group’s take of Harry Warren and Al Dubin’s ‘42nd Street’ is definitely of note in looking at the covers featured here.  It will be discussed a little later.  ‘Stairways,’ which opens the album, is another notable original worth examining.  It will be discussed later, too.  Each song noted here is important in its own way to the whole of the album.  When they are considered along with the rest of the album’s entries, the whole makes Unalome a welcome addition to this year’s field of new jazz albums and more proof of why Smoke Sessions Records continues to be among the elite jazz labels out there today.

Unalome, the latest album from Buster Williams, is a thoroughly engaging and entertaining new offering from the veteran jazz bassist.  That is proven throughout the album’s mix of originals and covers.  Among the most notable of the originals is the album’s deeply moving midpoint, ‘In The Middle of a Rainbow.’  As noted, the emotional depth of the seven-minute-plus composition is fully engaging.  It almost comes across as being a multi-movement opus, what with the soft opening bars, and the gradual change of sounds and moods as the song progresses.  Vocalist Jean Baylor’s velvety soft delivery alongside the equally subtle work of Stefon Harris on the vibraphone fully proves the old adage throughout, that less really is more.  Meanwhile, Bruce Williams’ saxophone solo works just as well here alongside George Colligan’s work on piano  and Lenny White’s even gentler, steady time keeping on the drums with his brushes and hi-hat.  The smooth approach that the group takes throughout the song makes the musical presentation here reason enough to hear the song.

In regards to the lyrics, they are minimal, but do so much even in such approach.  The lyrical content here paints a picture  of someone who is mostly self-assured he Baylor sings of being in an emotionally happy place being “in the middle of a rainbow” and knowing she can go on her way.  The thing is that her subject also sings of needing assurance, IE that other person in her life.  The mood that Baylor sets through her delivery and that her fellow performers establish along with her makes the whole so understated and in the best way possible.  Collectively, this song is such a powerful presentation in itself and just one example of how much the album has to offer.  The group’s take on the classic composition, ‘42nd Street’ is yet another example of what makes Unalome shine.

The rendition of ‘42nd Street presented here is unique to say the very least.  Where the original song is an upbeat, swinging composition, Baylor and company completely avoid that approach, instead giving the song more of a cool, smooth jazz style and sound.  One could almost argue here that in fact there is a sort of R&B influence here, what with the use of the saxophone and keyboards alongside Baylor’s distinct vocal delivery style.  It is a rendition that is sure to engage listeners.

Getting back to the record’s features originals, another original worth noting is the album’s opener, ‘Stairways.’  The arrangement featured here is another unique composition that will engage and entertain audiences just as much as any of the album’s other entries.  That is due to the light approach taken by the collective to the song.  The sort of bluesy leaning that it exhibits along side its equally cool jazz sound makes it such an enjoyable song and equally positive opening to the album.  From the controlled saxophone solo to the steady time keeping to the light touches on the vibraphone, the whole comes together here to make the song such an enjoyable work.  It really paints a picture of a high-end jazz club, that is just so positive.  When it is considered along with the other songs examined here and with the rest of the album’s entries, the whole makes Unalome overall, a fully engaging and entertaining work that is a welcome addition to this year’s field of new jazz albums.

Unalome, the latest album from jazz bassist Buster Williams, is a presentation that his fans and jazz fans alike will find fully enjoyable.  That is proven in each of the originals and covers that make up the album’s body.  The creativity that Williams and his fellow musicians exhibit through each song is what makes each song so enjoyable.  Whether it be the unique update to a classic song, such as ‘42nd Street’ or something more modern like the album’s opener, or even something more unique, such as ‘In The Middle of A Rainbow’ or any of the album’s other songs, the fact is the group’s creativity offers audiences something different and unique in each song.  All things considered, Unalome proves itself a welcome addition to this year’s field of new jazz albums.

Space Chaser Debuts New Single’s Video; Announces New Live Dates

Thrash metal band Space Chaser premiered the video for its latest single to kick off the week.

The band debuted the video for its new single, ‘Juggernaut’ Monday. The video features the band performing its new single in what looks like some sort of industrial factory type of setting as a backdrop. That footage is complimented with a story of a rather large armored vehicle making its way across an alien landscape, firing at anything that moves as the song plays over the whole.

The band talked about the video’s concept and how it works with the song in a prepared statement:

“Freeze your ass off in a Berlin club for two days and assemble a disrupted desert landscape from another planet? We thought that was a fantastic Space Chaser idea!,” The statement reads. “Together with our buddies from Peregrine Films we brought the Juggernaut – the merciless, warmongering monster – to life and sent him on a destructive journey. In well known “sci-fi meets thrash metal” style, we deliver the matching short film for our song “Juggernaut” and headbang our brains out along the way. Watch out that you don’t get buried under the tank chains! BOOM!”

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Juggernaut’ will resonate almost immediately with audiences. The riffing lends itself so easily to comparison to works from the likes of Accept, Testament, and the band’s Metal Blade Records label mates in Artillery. Even with this in mind, the arrangement still boasts its own identity separate from those acts’ works, making it all the more engaging and entertaining.

‘Juggernaut’ is featured in Space Chaser’s 2021 album, Give Us Life.

Third & Delaware Debuts New Single, Video; Performance Planned Wednesday With Norma Jean

Courtesy: O’Donnell Media Group

Metalcore band Third & Delaware’s new single, ‘Mayflower‘ is officially available to stream and download now.

The song’s official release Monday came three days after the band premiered the song’s companion video through its official YouTube channel. The musical arrangement featured in the band’s new single is everything that metalcore fans have come to enjoy about the genre, including the down-tuned guitars, the juxtaposition of the clean, controlled vocals and the screams, and even the precision drumming. The whole is comparable to works from so many of the band’s counterparts.

The lyrical theme featured in the band’s new single is a deeply emotional topic, according to front man Richy Xiong.

“‘Mayflower’s’ melody came to me in a nightmare,” Xiong said. “I woke up with the tune in my head, and I immediately recorded it as a voice memo. The track’s lyrics, including the name of the song itself, contain multiple double entendres. The Mayflower is of course known for transporting the pilgrims to the United States, so the song has nautical elements within the lyrics. I attempted suicide in May of 2019. If I had succeeded, my friends and family would be leaving me flowers that May, hence the title “May-flower”. The lyrics of the song showcases the contents of that nightmare through metaphors and double entendres. It is my crown jewel of lyrical and melodic art.”

The video for the band’s new single is a familiar stylistic presentation. It features the band performing its new single in what looks like a darkly lit, empty building. The visualization is paired with other imagery such as a couple sitting back to back against each other and a dancer contorting her body. It has to be assumed the overall visualization is meant to help illustrate the message in the song’s lyrical theme, especially the darkness in which the band performs its new single.

In other news, Third & Delaware is scheduled to serve as support for Norma Jean Wednesday at Trees in Dallas, TX as part of Norma Jean’s “Death Rattle Tour.” Fire From The Gods, Dispositions, and Greyhaven are also scheduled as support on the tour.

Elvenking’s upcoming performance at ProgPower USA is in support of its forthcoming album, Reader of the Runes – Rapture, which is scheduled for release April 28 through AFM Records. The band premiered the record’s new single, ‘The Hanging Tree‘ and its video last month. The premiere came a month after the debut of the album’s lead single, ‘Rapture.’

The musical arrangement featured in the band’s new single is a heavy, folk metal style composition that is easily comparable to works from the likes of Falconer, Beast in Black, and Hammer King. That is evidenced through the melodic power metal approach and sound presented throughout the song.

The band discussed the approach taken to the song in a collective statement.

“‘The Hanging Tree’ is a song that sets a violent darker tone as we dive deep into the core of the story narrated in the second part of the “Reader of the Runes” trilogy,” the statement reads. “If “Rapture” was more epic, slow paced and filled with many different shades and textures, “The Hanging Tree” is a merciless fast cavalcade that goes straight to the point with a heavy fast riffing, melodic yet aggressive vocals, big choirs in the chorus, two insane guitar solos and a folk break in the middle that our dear EK fans will definitely love. It will surely be a highlight in our forthcoming live shows.”

The lyrical theme featured in the band’s new single continues the story in another chapter, that was started in the band’s most recent album, according to a collective statement from the band. It seems to tell the story of a warrior walking through a forest who comes upon a giant oak. Bodies hang from the oak, apparently including that of his own daughter. The discovery has a very negative impact on him, as the story unfolds.

The song’s lyric video presents imagery that matches the story, including bodies hanging from the tree, footage of warriors’ faces and of those who hung from the tree.

The full track listing for Elvenking’s new album is noted below.

Mag Electric Debuts New Single, ‘Thorn In My Side’, Companion Video

Courtesy: Cowgirlzen Entertainment

A new week is here once again, but as another week gets underway, independent rock act Mag Electric is doing its part to help people get through another week.

The band did so with the premiere of its new single, ‘Thorn in My Side‘ and a companion video Sunday. It is fitting that the band premiered the new single and video late Sunday night, considering Monday is a thorn in the side of every person in this world.

He he did not specifically note Monday as that proverbial thorn, drummer Bill Peluso did say in regards to the song’s lyrical theme, it is a commentary about how we all deal with those proverbial thorns in our side, regardless of what they may be.

‘”Thorn in my Side’ is Mag Electric’s hard rock expression of life’s annoyances and problems,’ Peluso said. “Brought about by daily struggles most everyone experiences in all walks of life, the song expresses a response to the thorn in your side in your own life. All wrapped up in a psychedelic hard rock package, ‘Thorn’ figures to be a song rock fans can relate to as we go through life picking thorns out of our own sides.”

The musical arrangement featured in Mag Electric’s new single, which is the second from the band behind ‘Iron Horse,’ is an interesting presentation in its own right. The controlled guitar and bass pair with front man Jack Simchak’s vocals to make the whole a work that is easily comparable to works from Type O Negative, just not as melancholy in its mood. Simchak even sounds so much like Steele through his vocal delivery. The comparison is incredible.

The video for ‘Thorn in My Side’ is its own unique presentation. It features the band performing its new single against a very distinctly psychedelic video effect that harkens back, stylistically, to the kind of videos made in the 1960s and 70s.

A Killer’s Confession Debuts Cover Of Sepultura’s ‘Roots Bloody Roots’

Courtesy: Wake Up! Music Rocks/Wake Up! Music

A Killer’s Confession has taken on a Sepultura classic for its latest single.

The band premiered its take of Sepultura’s classic, ‘Roots Bloody Roots‘ Friday, and complimented it with a video to boot. The band’s take on the song largely stays true to its source material while amping it up even more. Perhaps most interesting of note is just how closely front man Waylon Reavis’ vocals resemble those of former Sepultura front man and current Soulfly front man Max Cavalera throughout the song.

The video for the band’s cover feature Reavis in studio in some portions, recording the song, and in his new makeup in other parts. The moments when he goes from smiling to frowning in his makeup are some very scary looks from him.

Reavis said in a statement, he and his band mates decided to take on the song because of the role that Sepultura (and Max Cavalera) had on his career.

“Releasing this song is an honor,” Reavis said.  “In my humble opinion I feel this is the best tribute I can give to Sepultura and Max Cavalera as a thank you for everything they have given me as a listener throughout the years.  Sepultura is one of the reasons I wanted to become a singer/songwriter.  I wanted to do them justice by adding a flavor with a new sound but staying true to what the song is. This is and will forever be one of my top 10 songs in my playlist.  I hope everyone enjoys my rendition.”

The premiere of this latest single comes on the heels of the band’s premiere of its single, ‘Be My Witness‘ late last year.

In other news, A Killer’s Confession is scheduled to take part in the 2023 InkCarceration festival July 14. The festival also features among its lineup, the likes of Slipknot, Megadeth, and Lamb of God.
