Independent record label 59X Records is doing its part address mental health concerns nationwide.

The label is addressing the concerns with its annual 59X Festival. Now in its second year, the festival is scheduled to take place Feb. 27. Tickets are available here, and 100 percent of sales for the livestream festival will go to benefit the nonprofit 320 Changes Direction. The program is geared toward addressing mental illness and related factors, such as homelessness, military service, and the economy.

Neon Dreams will headline the upcoming concert. The band was awarded the title of Breakthrough Group of the Year at the 2020 Juno Awards.

Also scheduled to perform at the virtual festival are: The Carolyn, Viper Club, Heathersett, Shoegazers, Hoity-Toity, Rough Dreams, Taylor Sackson, Misty Eyed, The Killakee House, Black Suit Youth, and Snailmate.

59 X Records founder Peter Catalano addressed the festival in a prepared statement.

“We’re thrilled to bring back 59 X Fest in 2021 as a virtual livestream,” said Catalano. “Our fest in 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic so we began plans to host something virtual in early 2021. The bands and artists jumped right to help us make this fest special and different. Due to everyone being spread out across the US and Canada, we wanted the world to see our artists and friends behind the scenes in their own creative spaces, even if that meant just filming with an iPhone. It speaks to the culture here at 59 X Records that we are really proud of.”

Ami Rogers, Festival Organizer and Vice President of Operations and Artist Development at 59X Records expanded on Catalano’s comments as she addressed the partnership with 320 Changes Direction.

“Seeing musicians, fans, and the rest of the world continue to struggle with mental health throughout this global pandemic has been difficult for everyone,” said Rogers. “In the absence of live shows, we were compelled to use whatever platform we could to raise awareness and funds for 320 Changes Direction.”

Black Suit Youth Debuts New Single, ‘Survivor’s Guilt’

Independent rock band Black Suit Youth debuted its latest single this week.

The band debuted its new single ‘Survivor’s Guilt‘ Thursday. The song is the second single from the band’s forthcoming album The World is Almost Over, which is slated for a spring release through 59X records. its release follows that of the album’s lead single/title track in October.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Survivor’s Guilt’ is an acoustic presentation. Its simple guitar approach, paired with the mournful vocal delivery sound gives the song a sound that will appeal very much to emo fans.

According to front man Bryan Maher, the lyrical content featured alongside the song’s musical arrangement came from a personal place.

“It’s a song about two buddies of mine, Mark and Mike (who was Black Suit Youth’s original bassist).,” he said. “I miss Mark and Mike the most out all of those I’ve lost. The first verse is a reflection about Mark when we were teenagers, and the second verse is about Mike and I growing apart before his untimely death and the total shock of it.”

Rough Dreams Debuts Thrice Cover, Companion Video; Announces Title, Release Date For New EP

Independent emo-core band Rough Dreams debuted the first song from its forthcoming covers compilation this week.

The band debuted the video for its cover of Thrice’s ‘The Artist in the Ambulance‘ Tuesday. The song is featured in the band’s forthcoming covers EP From The Graves of Better Days. The record is scheduled for release Feb. 5.

Vocalist/guitarist Jake Jones talked about the decision to include the cover in its upcoming EP and making a video for the song during a recent interview.

“We decided to make a video for The Artist in The Ambulance because the song perfectly sums up the vibe of the early 2000’s underground emo/punk/post-hardcore era,” said Jones. “That time period in music is so nostalgic and brings back such great memories for so many people.”

According to vocalist/guitarist Chris Suggs, the video, directed by Kurt Fowles 9of Sirius Cenema), was recorded in an abandoned school building.

“Filming the video in a massive, multi-level, abandoned school in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania could’ve been a disastrous proposal, but Kurt was on top of every detail, and it ended up being an incredible experience,” said Suggs. “He captured the lonesome, forgotten beauty of the once-majestic school in every shot, and it fit the style and theme of the song perfectly. From the time we arrived, until the time we left, we never ran out of things to explore, or potentially dangerous situations to put ourselves in, and somehow in-between all the fun we had, we managed to make a video we are extremely proud of.”

Rough Dreams’ cover stays in line with its source material, stepping up the fullness and richness in the sound as the only notable change. Thrice is just one of the bands whose work Rough Dreams covers in its new EP. It also tackles work from bands, such as Saves The Day, and Lucero.

This Modern Debuts Acoustic Take Of ‘Next Time Around’

Courtesy: 59X Records

This Modern premiered the acoustic take of its latest single this week.

The band debuted the acoustic take of its song ‘Next Time Around’ Thursday through All Punked Up. The premiere of the song’s updated take comes more than two months after the band debuted the song’s original take.

The band’s toned down take of ‘Next Time Around’ stays in line with its original. At the same time, the more powerful moments are heavy just without the full-on guitars. Rather, the acoustic guitar, string arrangement, and vocals put their own touch to the song, giving it a new sound and identity.

Even being toned down, the song still will find appeal among fans of twenty one pilots.

Front man Marcus Reardon discussed the song’s lyrical theme during a recent interview.

“The lyrics are designed to be more sad and reflective, while the instrumental is there to uplift you and make you move- it’s a style of writing that we’ve worked a long time to nail down,” he said. “The goal was to create something anthemic, but beautiful.”

Drummer Sean Whiteman added to the discussion.

“The instrumental was inspired by a Cemetery Sun song, ‘Piece of S***,’ he said. “We’ve been listening to a lot of their music in the studio lately.”

The original take of ‘Next Time Around’ is available to stream and download here. Both versions are available to stream and download here.
