Gemini Syndrome Front Man Aaron Nordstrom Discusses The Band’s New Album, Upcoming Tour, More In New Interview

Courtesy: Century Media Records

Gemini Syndrome has been in the news a lot lately.

The band has released a handful of singles in recent months, from its forthcoming album, 3rd DegreeThe Raising. The guys are also prepping to head back out on the road in support of the album, which is scheduled for release Oct. 15 through Century Media Records. Before all that happens though, front man Aaron Nordstrom took some time to talk with Phil’s Picks about the group’s new record, its upcoming tour, and one of Nordstrom’s side projects in a new interview.

Sometimes Nordstrom is clearly serious and contemplative, and at others he gets a bit lighthearted with his comments. The interview is available to read in whole below.

PP: Congratulations on the upcoming release of your new album, 3rd Degree – The Raising.  If I recall correctly, you’ve mentioned that this album is the culmination of a trilogy of records from Gemini Syndrome.  So, talk to me if you will about how this new album connects, musically and lyrically, to its predecessors.

AN: The trilogy covers the aspects of birth, maturity, and death, through the realization of the self, the realization of death, and the realization of rebirth and awakening; A cycle that can be seen in all things in existence.

PP: Staying on that note, did you all as a band have the intent to create a trilogy of albums right from the release of your debut album, Lux back or did things just sort of evolve from there?

AN: The plan evolved from the beginning. Yes

PP: Gemini Syndrome released 3rd Degree – The Raising’s lead single, ‘Reintegration’ almost a year ago, well ahead of the album’s release. That’s a pretty big span of time.  Can you offer some insight into the decision to release the song so far from the album’s release?  Were you all just still working on the album at the time or was it something else?

AN: We decided to release music in the way we did mainly due to the pandemic. We had been ready to release in early 2020 but due to the worldwide shut downs we decided to wait. However releasing singles allowed us to get music out there while people were stuck at home without giving away the full album yet.

PP: Staying on that matter of the album’s songs, you all have released five singles since the release of ‘Reintegration.’  That is almost half of the album.  Do you see the release of anymore singles as the album’s release date nears?

AN: We will definitely doing a couple more singles and videos from this album

PP: The singles that the album has produced have been met with pretty good response nation wide from what I’ve seen and heard.  What does that support from radio and from audiences alike mean to you all?

AN: Support means everything  Support is the means by which we are allowed to carry on doing what we love

PP: You all are resting up and prepping to head back out on the road again next month for the next leg of your tour in support of your new album, after already spending July and August on the road.  Is everyone ready to go for this next leg, or does it get easy to get kind of settled in and too relaxed, considering how taxing tours can be?

AN: I can speak for myself that I am 100 percent ready to get out and keep touring.  We had a really long break anyway and this is what I was made to do

PP: The upcoming leg of your tour is scheduled to launch Oct. 28 in Chippewa Falls, WI and to run through Nov. 27 in Reno, NV.  It even includes a stop in my home state on Nov.13 in Greensboro, NC.  When did planning for this latest leg start and how long did it take to finalize everything?  What factors played into the final schedule?

AN: Oh not long.  We just made sacrifices to the goat of Mendes and it all just kinda worked out

PP: Staying on that matter, with all three of your albums being connected, what can audiences expect from the shows’ set lists?  Will there be a mix of music from all three records or will the attention be more on this latest release?

AN: Balance is key in all things.

PP: Changing gears for a moment, Gemini Syndrome is not the only project that you have been involved in over the past year or so, Aaron.  You’ve also done some work as vocalist for Woyote.  What can you tell me and my readers about where things stand with that band right now?

AN: Woyote is a young project that Mikey Doling asked me to sing for about a year ago   Based in Belgium, We are almost done with a full length and have played a couple shows in Belgium in September. As the timing allows you will be seeing and hearing much more from us!

PP: Getting back on the matter of your upcoming tour, you all are bringing Ovtlier and Pushing Veronica along for the ride again.  Ovtlier is a personal favorite of mine as well as Gemini Syndrome.  For those who maybe haven’t heard either band’s music, what is it about those two bands that impressed you all so much?

AN: We work closely with PV.  We love what they’re doing, their attitude, their drive, and their music!  They’re like family.  Ovtlier was great to have on the last run and they offer a great show and great music  They’re a really fun group of people to have on the road also  Making the family bigger  We’re also bringing out Them Damn Kings this run as well

PP: Staying on the matter of touring, live music has had a bumpy road this year.  No pun intended.  Things started out hopeful as the year opened, but as the year has progressed, it seems like more and more tours have gotten postponed or canceled altogether because of concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.  So can you offer a first hand glimpse into what it’s been like being out on the road?  Are people wearing masks?  Have there been concerns among officials and audiences or even bands about the pandemic’s impact?  What do you personally see happening with live music as we wind down 2021 and head into 2022?

AN: Everywhere is different  I’ll say this, the thing I noticed the most is that people were and are grateful to be back out and experiencing live music and people again  It’s refreshing to see

PP: Getting back to 3rd Degree – The Raising, it will be the band’s second album with Century Media, what with Another Century being essentially a division of Century Media.  What is it about Century Media that initially led you to sign with the label?

AN: A tarot reading I did in the Carlsbad caves

PP: One last question before I close things out.  Thank you again for your time.  I appreciate you taking the time.  I know it’s probably way too soon to say at this point, but with the trilogy being completed with the pending release of 3rd Degree – The Raising, where does Gemini Syndrome go from there?  Are you already looking at your next album(s)?  Do you think this trio of albums will be the band’s only trilogy?

AN: We are already writing music for the future. I am collecting ideas from the astral plane to write about. I don’t know if we will do another trilogy. Maybe a double album to complete the 23 symbolism. Who knows?

Thanks again for your time and best of luck to you all once you head out on the road. I for one am also looking forward to the album’s release.

Violent Idols Takes On Social Media, Its Impacts In New Single, Video

Courtesy: TAG Publicity

Violent Idols debuted the video for its latest single this week.

The band premiered the video for its latest single, ‘Revenge‘ Wednesday. The single will be available to stream and download April 7, almost a year after the release of its then latest single, ‘F*** You.’ That song featured guest vocals from Gemini Syndrome front man Aaron Nordstrom.

The video features Violent Idols’ enigmatic front man “V” in a hallway with a shining light behind him, walls on either side as he sings against the song, which plays over the simple visual. The visual of the light shining on that darkness of the hallway is meant to help translate the message in the song’s lyrical theme.

The band talked about the song’s lyrical theme in a prepared statement.

”This band has always been about looking the monster inside right in the eye and staring it down,” the statement reads. “‘Revenge’ is no exception. With social media we all always seem so caught up in only showing our best selves. But that’s not all we are. You really only know somebody after you’ve seen the worst side of them; yourself included. When you confront the depths of your own darkness, you begin to lift that veil.”

“It’s easy to say you’d turn the other cheek while sitting in an ivory tower,” the statement continues. “But when the blood of someone you love ends up on the hands of your enemy, what do you do? A lot of people don’t like to ask themselves that question. They don’t want to know what the monster inside of them looks like.”

The musical arrangement that accompanies the song’s resonating lyrical theme is an industrial type work that will appeal to fans of bands, such as Orgy, Spineshank, and Apartment 26.

Gemini Syndrome, Woyote Front Man Nordstrom Joins Invidia For New Single

Gemini Syndrome front man Aaron Nordstrom is keeping himself quite busy lately.

Nordstrom has joined independent hard rock band Invidia for its latest single, ‘The Other Side.’  Invidia debuted the single’s companion lyric video Tuesday.

The video features the song’s lyrics set against a post apocalyptic skyline, reminding listeners that there is a need for unity even as the end is near, so while there is a certain nihilism to the song’s lyrical theme, there is also a message of unity and hope, making for an interesting juxtaposition for audiences.

Front man Travis Johnson discussed the song’s lyrical theme in a recent interview.

“With everything that has gone on with recent events, I feel this song has even a stronger meaning than the day I wrote it, love prevails,” he said.

Nordstrom’s guest appearance with Invidia is just his latest project.  He was recently announced as the new front man of another independent hard rock band, Woyote.  The band was formed by Mikey Doling (Soulfly, Snot, Channel Zero).

Nordstrom himself stressed in an interview he has no intention of leaving his post with Gemini Syndrome in his own statement.

“You never know when your time is up so I plan on doing as much as I can, and I am very excited about being a part of Woyote!,” he said.

Woyote is working on its new single.

Woyote To Debut New Single, Video Friday; Announces New Vocalist

Courtesy: O’Donnell Media Group

Independent hard rock band Woyote made a big announcement this week.

The band announced it will release its new single this week and that it has a new, well-known front man.  The band announced it will release its new single ‘Alternate Reality’ Friday through Intercept Music, and that now handling vocals for the band is none other than Gemini Syndrome front man Aaron Nordstrom.

Woyote founding member Mikey Doling (Soulfly, Snot, Channel Zero) confirmed in a prepared statement that the video for the band’s new single will be a lyric video.

“Being that there are travel limitations these days we decided that the lyric video was the way to go on this release,” he said.

Woyote is the brainchild of Doling.  He is joined by — Quentin Cornet (guitar), Jari De Roover (guitar), Sebastiaan Verhoeven (bass) and Charles Degolla (drums) — to round out the band’s lineup.  The band released its debut single ‘The Hard Way‘ early this year.  It was followed by the debut of two more singles, ‘Way of the Wolf‘ and ‘And You Know.’

Information provided by the band about its new single and front man does not identity the band’s original front man, who performed on the noted singles, but does note that after working with the unidentified vocalist, Doling felt it necessary to move in a different direction, leading to the connection with Nordstrom.  The information stresses that even with his new duties, Nordstrom is still fronting Gemini Syndrome along with this new project.

Nordstrom himself stressed he has no intention of leaving his post with Gemini Syndrome in his own statement.

“You never know when your time is up so I plan on doing as much as I can, and I am very excited about being a part of Woyote!,” he said.

The noted provided information states that Doling and Nordstrom have known each other for approximately 12 years, and that Doling previously produced records by Gemini Syndrome.

Violent Idols Asking Fans To Help Craft Its Next Video

Courtesy: Violent Idols

Violent Idols wants fans to help create the video for its new song ‘F*** You.’

The band debuted the song by itself April 23.  It is featured in the band’s new EP Idolatry, which is streaming in whole through Spotify.  The song and EP were produced and mixed by Kane Churko at The Hideout Recording Studio.

As the band prepares to create an official video for its new single, which features guest vocals from Gemini Syndrome front man Aaron Nordstrom, the group is launching a contest to get its fans involved in the process.  The band is asking fans to submit footage to the band showing how they say ‘F*** You’ during the COVID-19 quarantine.

The footage picked by the band will end up in the upcoming video.  Fans can submit their footage now here.

In terms of its musical arrangement, the song lends itself, ironically, to comparisons to works from Gemini Syndrome, The Veer Union and other similar acts through its heavy, guitar-driven foundation.  The song’s low-end and percussion adds to that comparison even more.

The song’s lyrical theme is an anger-fueled statement to which any listener can relate, and was discussed by the band recently in a collective statement.

“‘F*** You’ encapsulates a feeling that every single person alive has felt at one time or another,” the statement reads.  “Even the best of us still have moments where we just want to let our anger and frustration out and say, ‘F*** You.’  This song is an ode to that feeling, a feeling that need not be hidden inside, as it’s an honest reflection of he internal human struggle.”

The band’s enigmatic front man “V” added to the discussion with his own comment on the song’s creation with his own statement.

“Very appropriately, I started writing this song in my car after getting stuck behind bad driver after bad driver,” he said.  “Aaron [Nordstrom] and I had discussed the idea of him guesting on our EP and once I had the initial seeds for it I knew it would be perfect to involve him on.  Aaron is an extremely talented artist, and he brought a whole other layer of intellectual rage to the song that I would not have been able to do alone.”

‘F*** You’ is the fifth and final single from the new five-song EP.  The band debuted the EP’s lead single ‘Enemies With Benefits‘ Oct. 22, 2019.  The song’s musical arrangement presents a sort of industrial metal sound at its base while its lyrical theme is heavy in its own right.

“V” discussed the song’s lyrical theme in a previous interview.

“There is no hero without an enemy, and usually, even the villain thinks himself the hero,” he said.  “This song explores the schizophrenic relationship between the two and their perpetual bond.”

‘Enemies with Benefits’ is available to stream and download here.

The debut of the EP’s second song, a cover of The Doors’ ‘Break On Through (To The Other Side)‘ followed in December.  The band debuted the EP’s next song, ‘Unscripted VIolence,’ which is the theme song for AEW star John Moxley, on Feb. 5.  It was followed weeks later with the debut of the record’s fourth single, ‘New Religion (ft. K.A.Z.).’
