‘Rick & Morty Issue #5’ Offers Plenty Of Laughs Through Its Twisted Story, Dialogue

Courtesy: Oni Press

The next chapter in the latest story arc from Oni Press’ Rick & Morty comic book series hits store shelves Wednesday and this latest chapter is quite the interesting presentation as its story shows.  The story, written by Alex Firber, picks up where the story left off in Issue #4 and will be discussed shortly.  The art – created by the team of Marc Ellerby, Andrew Dalhouse and Christopher “Crank!” Crank – adds its own touch to the presentation and will be discussed a little later.  The dialogue used to help advance the story rounds out its most important elements and will also be examined later.  Each item noted is important in its own way to the whole of Rick & Morty Issue #5.  All things considered they make this latest issue of Oni Press’ ongoing comic book adaptation of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim series another engaging and entertaining entry in the ongoing franchise.

Rick & Morty Issue #5, scheduled for release Wednesday in comic shops nationwide, is a presentation that fans of the ongoing series are sure to enjoy.  That is thanks in part to the twisted story at its heart.  Written by Alex Firber, the story featured in this issue finds Rick having to escape from the clutches of Glug Vronsky, who is hellbent on making Rick his friend.  Vronsky is so bent on making Rick like him that he is holding him in a prison cell of sorts.  Rick manages to escape and eventually meets back up with Morty, who is himself a prisoner, but of a different type.  He is being tortured by a pair of sadistic dentists who are ripping out his teeth.  His ability to withstand the torture leads the pair to take him to Vronsky, who uses him to try and figure out how to make Rick like him.  The whole thing is so bizarrely twisted that audiences cannot help but read the story.  Along the way, Firber adds in a sharp dig at the issue of artificial intelligence when Vronsky brings Morty an AI made version of Morty’s love interest Noelle.  The commentary about this creation creates its own share of entertainment and engagement.  Even wilder is that all of this is taking place inside a giant interstellar dog.  Yes, an interstellar dog.  It is something that audiences must read to believe.  All in all the story featured in this issue of Rick & Morty forms a strong foundation for its presentation.

The story featured in Rick & Morty Issue #5 is just part of what makes it so intriguing.  Its artwork makes for its own share of interest.  The gory display that Ellerby, Dalhouse and Crank present as Morty is being tortured is hard to look at but one can’t help but look at it, seeing his teen being pulled, still connected by nerve endings, to his mouth.  And seeing him become his own version of Rick, complete with the wild hair, is so entertaining in its own right.  Knowing Morty is Rick’s grandson, now readers get to see what Morty could look like one day thanks to the group.  The AI version of Noelle is another example of the importance of the artwork presented here.  The blank, vacant eyes, the overall cartoony look makes her look like something from perhaps one of Disney’s current crop of animated series.  The design has that look, and it makes the design so fun to see.  What’s more it shows how wild AI can be in creating its own product, so to speak.  That it looks so odd and honestly somewhat scary, helps to drive home the argument of the danger of relying too much on artificial intelligence for creative purposes.  The overall look of the art in this issue clearly plays well into its appeal and is just one more aspect of what makes the issue work.  The overall dialogue also plays into the issue’s success.

The impact of the issue’s dialogue is most audible late in the story as Morty goes absolutely crazy, imagining he is Rick.  When Vronsky tells Morty that Rick doesn’t need him anymore and that he is Rock’s friend, that sends Morty over the edge.  He goes absolutely crazy, telling Vronsky, “I’m Rick! All the hate! All the anger!”  This, as he tries to choke out Vronsky. This is a side of Morty that readers rarely see.  Yes, from time to time he does stand up to Rick but for Morty to go this mad is very rare.  Staying on the topic of Morty, his discussion with his captors about how he has survived their incredible torture is just as wild.  He explains that the survival technique – imagining the pain was happening to someone else – was taught to him by Rick, ironically.  There is just something about this moment, Morty’s casual manner of discussing the matter shows the intensity of the pain he has felt.  It makes the moment just all the more shocking.

On yet another note, Vronsky’s commentary about AI universes being imperfect is a hard-hitting commentary about the tech that is AI.  It is a reminder that humans should not rely so much as we already do on the technology.  Even being so brief, it is a strong statement that everyone should heed.  This is just one more example of what makes this issue’s dialogue as important as the issue’s art and story.  When all three elements are considered collectively, they make Issue #5 of Rick & Morty an interesting overall new issue of the ongoing comic book series.

Rick & Morty Issue #5 is an intriguing new addition to Oni Press’ ongoing comic book series adaptation of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim series.  Its interest comes in part through its story, which is a bizarre, twisted tale of Rick and Morty each having to escape their own captors and stopping mad tech genius Glug Vronsky.  The whole thing takes place inside a giant interstellar dog.  Yes, a dog.  The artwork used in this issue plays its own important role in the issue’s overall presentation.  The dialogue offers more biting satire about the real world, albeit briefly while also offering plenty of entertainment through lots of weird discussions.  Each item noted here is important in its own way to the whole of the issue.  All things considered they make Rick & Morty Issue #5 another interesting entry in Oni Press’ ongoing comic book series.

Oni Press Offers Audiences A Great, Biting Entertainment Commentary In ‘Rick & Morty Presents Time Zoo’

Courtesy: Oni Press

Early this month, Oni Press released what would appear to be a one-off story from its Rick & Morty comic book series in the form of Rick & Morty Presents Time Zoo.  This apparent single-issue presentation is a surprisingly fun and funny offering from the publishing company and its franchise.  That is thanks in large part to its featured story, which will be discussed shortly.  The dialogue that is part of the story makes for its own engagement and entertainment and will be discussed a little later.  The recently released comic book’s price is of note, too, considering the overall content.  It will also be discussed later.  Each item noted is important in its own right to the whole of this Rick & Morty title.  A;; things considered they make Rick & Morty Presents Time Zoo such an enjoyable installment of Oni Press’ long-running franchise that is Rick & Morty.

Oni Press’ recently released Rick & Morty comic title Rick & Morty Presents Time Zoo is a surprisingly entertaining addition to the publishing company’s long-running franchise.  Whether readers are familiar with the franchise or new to the title, this installment of the ongoing comic book franchise will prove engaging and entertaining for most comic book (and even movie) fans in large part because of its central story.  The story here is relatively simple, as with most Rick & Morty stories.  Rick, Morty, and the rest of the family sit down for a meal one day, and as the meal progresses, Rick realizes the family is stuck in a time loop.  It’s not just a time loop, either.  As it turns out, some unseen force keeps starting the family’s situation over again and again, rebooting the situation, as Summer eventually realizes (not to give away too much).  As the situation unfolds, the story becomes, essentially, a witty commentary about the nature of Hollywood to reboot everything (and even the music industry).  On a related note, the story, written by Jake Goldman in this issue, also comments on audiences’ need for nostalgia, that same old same old, and how it actually plays into how entertainment in whole has become so trite.  The almost voyeuristic nature of the “time tourists” does really well to illustrate that commentary, as does Summer’s experience with “Nostalgia-vore,” the creature that is controlling all of the rebooting.  Summer’s eventual realization that new things are needed even as much as we as people grasp so tightly to that sense of nostalgia that we all have, is its own important addition to the bigger discussion here.  The epilogue, which will not be revealed here, puts a wonderful finishing touch to this story.  It brings everything full circle while somewhat indicting Rick and company just as much as everyone else in the situation.  The whole of the story makes for a wonderful read for everyone.

The story featured here would be nothing without the dialogue used to bring it to life.  Again, Goldman is to credit for that appeal.  One of the funniest moments of dialogue actually has nothing to do with the bigger story.  It comes as Rick’s Quantum bot explodes and catches on fire on the family’s table.  Rick makes a comment about not being able to keep up with Beth’s house rules, one of which is that no one can use the guest towels in the bathroom.  Summer chimes in immediately after, saying simply, “We never have guests.”  That moment, albeit brief, is so telling.  It is its own sharp commentary about the consumerist nature of people; how people are convinced to buy things they don’t even need.  It actually does play at least indirectly into the bigger story of how people are the cause of the very things they complain about.

In another case that is equally sharp and biting, the story opens with Morty showing Rick a poster of a new movie sequel coming out.  The poster has the tag line, “This time…It’s for family.”  Rick is very quick to ask Morty, “wasn’t the last movie also ‘for family’?”  This is where the shole thing starts.  It is also such a sharp commentary about Hollywood’s tendency to just recycle everything, knowing that so many audiences are too inattentive to note the lack of originality in marketing, let alone story.  This brief opening moment of dialogue is so simple yet is so relatable and in turn makes the rest of the story resonate so well with readers.  The dialogue throughout is very similar in all of its presentation, yet remains so engaging because of everything being noted in each moment.  All things considered, the dialogue does so much in its own right to make the story enjoyable.

Considering the overall engaging and entertaining nature of Rick & Morty Presents Time Zoo’s content, it makes the book’s price actually worth it.  The price here is $4.99, which is only a dollar more than most normal issues of Rick & Morty.  This book is spread along 30 pages, which is actually almost in line with the length of most of the franchise’s books.  Why it is mor expensive than those issues is anyone’s guess, but despite that, still will not break anyone’s budget.  Add in the fact that it seems to be one standalone story makes the price just as positive, even being mor expensive than other books in the line.  Keeping all of this in mind, the pricing for this issue of Rick & Morty is still its own positive.  When it is joined with the content, the whole makes Rick & Morty Presents Time Zoo another enjoyable addition to the ongoing franchise.

‘Rick & Morty’ Fans Will Find New Mini-Series Well Worth The Read

Courtesy: Oni Press

Rick & Morty is unquestionably one of the most unique and intriguing animated series for grown-ups to come along in a very long time.  The pair’s adventures have generated an audience base that is clearly very loyal to the property both on screen and on the printed page in the series’ comic book counterpart.  This July, the comic book’s four-issue mini-series Rick & Morty vs. Cthulu will give audiences even more to appreciate about the franchise upon its release.  The mini-series, which launched in December and wrapped this month, is set for release July 18 through Oni Press in a 112-page graphic novel.  The story at the center of the mini-series is reason enough for audiences to take in the collection.  It will be discussed shortly.  The art presented throughout the story is of its own note, too, and will be discussed a little later.  The paperback presentation’s average price point and its separate listings make the overall presentation even more positive.  This will also be addressed later.  When this aspect is considered along with the mini-series’ story and its art, the whole makes the overall presentation another work that longtime devotees of Rick & Morty will appreciate.

Oni Press’ forthcoming paperback presentation of Rick & Morty vs. Cthulu is a collection that is certain to entertain the franchise’s most devoted, longtime audiences.  That is due in no small part to the story at the center of the mini-series.  The story, which pokes fun at author H.P. Lovecraft and the place of his literary works in the world of pop culture and literature, is relatively simple:  Rick and Morty have just gotten back home from a failed intergalactic mission involving alien mobsters.  The mission failed thanks to Morty screwing up his part in the mission.  As the pair returns, it turns out Morty’s dad, Jerry, is reading a book by infamous author H.P. Lovecraft, leading Rick to become suspicious of him and Morty’s mom, (Rick’s own daughter) Beth of being possessed by the forces of Lovecraft’s books.  Along the way, the familiar breaking of the 4th wall that is used occasionally in the animated TV series is used to just the right amount, too.  In order to make sure the forces of evil have not made it into the real world somehow, Rick, Morty, Jerry, Beth, and Morty’s sister, Summer, all enter the “Lovecraft Dimension.”  Rick, Morty, and Summer end up being trapped in the dark dimension, but not before Beth and Jerry are able to make it back to the real world.  Of course, the couple comes into play later in the story after Rick manages to get back to the real world.  Getting back to the story, Rick, Morty, and Summer each end up in different Lovecraftian settings along the way, each its own unique situation that will keep audiences reading.  Morty and Summer end up facing one another in one last battle as the story nears its end.  Of course in typical Rick & Morty fashion, the battle does not turn out quite as expected.  Readers will have to discover the outcome for themselves.  The final confrontation between Rick and Cthulu following that battle turns out surprisingly, too, leading to the equally entertaining epilogue.

As the story progresses in each of the standalone issues, brief but concise summaries of the Lovecraft stories incorporated into the overarching arc are provided to help give context to the bigger picture.  Whether that background will be provided with the full, paperback pressing is yet to be known.  Hopefully it will be included, as it really does help enhance the reading experience and immerse readers even more into the overall story.

The story and the background provided together in each of the mini-series’ four issues go a long way toward making the presentation here well worth reading.  It is just one part of what makes the mini-series engaging and entertaining.  The artwork in each issue adds even more to that engagement and entertainment.  The artwork makes each frame look just like it leaped from the screen to the printed page.  That is thanks to the work of the trio of Troy Little, Leonardo Ito, and Christopher “Crank!” Crank  The colors in each frame are so rich and the dialogue is so easy to read thanks to the work of each team member.  What’s more, the unique style of the font within each page makes for even more enjoyment in reading.  That unique styling for the font and the richness of the color even in the font helps establish the franchise’s identity even more and immerse readers that much more into the story.  Keeping that in mind, the overall artwork clearly adds its own important touch to the overall presentation as the story itself.

As much as the content does to engage and entertain audiences throughout each issue of Rick & Morty vs. Cthulu, it is just part of what makes the upcoming complete mini-series release worth having among fans of Rick & Morty.  The pricing for the collection will impress readers just as much as the content.  Taking prices listed through Amazon, Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, and Books-A-Million, the average price point for the collection is $23.19.  That is not exactly a budget buster for anyone.  That is just the average price point.  Amazon, Walmart, and Target each list the book online below that price, at $21.99, which is just below the noted average.  Barnes & Noble Booksellers and Books-a-Million each list the book slightly more expensive, at $24.99 each.  Comic shops nationwide are certain to have their own price points, so readers would do well to check in on their prices, too.  Simply put, fans of Rick & Morty and its print counterpart will not find themselves spending an arm and a leg with the forthcoming full collection of Rick & Morty vs. Cthulu.  Yes, the average and separate price listings are higher than that of the separate issues (roughly $12 or a little more with tax total for all of the standalone issues), but again, not every town out there has a comic shop or place where fans can buy comic books, so being able to get this collection at a relatively affordable price is its own positive.  To that end, that pricing and the overall content works together to make Rick & Morty vs. Cthulu a welcome read for any of the franchise’s fans.

The fourth and final issue of Rick & Morty vs. Cthulu is scheduled for released March 22 through Oni Press.  The complete four-issue collection is scheduled for release July 18 through Oni Press.  More information on the mini-series and other titles from Oni Press is available at:

Pound Puppies’ Latest Compilation One Of The Show’s Best Yet

Courtesy: Shout! Factory/Hub Network/Hasbro Studios

Courtesy: Shout! Factory/Hub Network/Hasbro Studios

Shout! Factory has teamed up with Hasbro Studios and the Hub network once again another compilation of episodes from Hub’s Pound PuppiesPound Puppies: Holiday Hijinks is one of the best compilations from this family and kid favorite series to be released yet.  That is largely because of each episode’s writing.  This compilation offers viewers some of the series’ most heartfelt episodes to date.  Just as noteworthy in this compilation is the guest voice talent.  Both parents and kids alike will recognize the celebrity voices that are included in some of the episodes in this set.  Something more subtle, but just as worth noting in this collection of episodes is that each one features its own musical number.  It’s something that hadn’t been seen (or rather heard) in previous collections.  It’s a nice touch to the episodes in question.  The reason for that will be discussed later.  All things considered, Holiday Hijinks is one more great addition to any family’s home DVD library, whether it’s their first introduction to the new Pound Puppies or not.

The latest compilation of Pound Puppies episodes includes five more episodes from the Hub network’s hit children’s series.  This follows the same format as the previous DVD compilations that have been released.  The episodes collected for this collection stand out because they are some of the series’ most heartwarming episodes yet.  The collection’s opener, “I Heard The Barks on Christmas Eve” is the collection’s only actual holiday themed episode.  It’s still a wonderful story, nonetheless.  For the first time ever, viewers see that Mr. McLeish actually has a heart and isn’t the mean middle aged man that he comes across as being in most episodes.  It presents those classic messages that everybody needs somebody and that everybody deserves somebody, especially during the holidays.  Audiences will appreciate how writer Joe Ansolabehere expanded on the show’s central theme of family in the set’s second episode, “I Never Barked For My Father.”  Lucky meets his long lost father and brother for the first time ever in this episode.  These are two of the collection’s finest.  What’s more, older audiences will appreciate the guest vocal talent shared here.  That is another positive to this set of episodes.

The episodes collected for Pound Puppies: Holiday Hijinks offer plenty of heart and laughs.  The writers behind the show are to be applauded for their work.  Just as worth noting of these episodes is the guest vocal talent recruited for these episodes.  Lucky’s father is voiced by none other than Gary Cole in “I Never Barked For My Father.”  And his long lost brother is voiced by one Gary Cooksey.  Cooksey is best known for his time on Diff’rent Strokes as well as voicing Montana Max on Tiny Toon Adventures and portraying Robert “Buddy” Budnick on Nickelodeon’s hit 90s series, Salute Your Shorts.  Older audiences will recognize Gary Cole from his roles in Office Space, Dodgeball, Talladega Nights, and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law just to name some of his work.  Cole and Cooksey are just a couple of the well-known names that grace this collection of episodes.  Fred Stoller (Wordgirl, Everybody Loves Raymond) guests on the collection’s opener as the voice of Ralph.  Ralph is a stray that has lost his Christmas spirit because he has never had a single owner.  That all changes thanks to the Pound Puppies.  Wayne Knight (Seinfeld, Scooby-Doo & The Goblin King, Jurassic Park, The Exes) also shares his talents as the voice of Ralphie, Mr. McLeish’s old friend in “Good Dog, McLeish.”  If that isn’t enough, then the addition of both Tress MacNeille (Futurama, The Simpsons) and Charles Shaughnessy (The Nanny) as guest talent in “Prince and the Pupper” will certainly convince parents to check out this latest collection of Pound Puppies episodes with their kids.  The list of guest talent included in Pound Puppies: Holiday Hijinks is only a glimpse of the big name actors and actresses that have lent their talents to this series over the course of three seasons.  And it’s just one more reason for families to enjoy this collection together.  There is one more reason that families will enjoy the episodes presented in this set.  That reason is that each of the set’s five episodes includes its own musical number.  It would have been so easy for the writers to go over the top considering the history of musical numbers in shows that aren’t known for musical numbers.  Instead, the show’s writers made each episode’s musical number respectable and within limitations.  They didn’t make them big, cheesy tongue-in-cheek numbers.  They actually add a certain amount of emotion and comic relief where necessary.  Just as with the guest vocal talent and the equally enjoyable writing overall, the musical number become one more part of the whole that makes Pound Puppies: Holiday Hijinks well worth the watch any time of the year.  It is available now on DVD in stores and online.  It can be ordered direct from the Shout! Factory store at http://www.shoutfactory.com/product/pound-puppies-holiday-hijinks.  More information on this and other Pound Puppies DVDs is available online at http://www.shoutfactory.com and http://www.facebook.com/shoutactoryofficial.  To keep up with the latest sports and entertainment reviews and news, go online to http://www.facebook.com/philspicks and “Like” it.  Fans can always keep up with the latest sports and entertainment reviews and news in the Phil’s Picks blog at https://philspicks.wordpress.com.
