Malaysian-American singer/musician Zee Avi will release her latest album this Spring.

Night Light, which is a collection of covers of family favorite songs, will be released Tuesday, April 15th. It is the first ever family for the artist who has also released albums via Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. The album includes covers of Louis Armstrong’s ‘Dream a Little Dream’, Bobby McFerrin’s ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’, Joni Mitchell’s ‘The Circle Game’, and even ‘Colors of the Wind’ from Disney’s Pocahontas among many others. It was produced by Little Monster Records head Kevin Salem at his company’s studios in Woodstock, New York and conjures thoughts of Avi’s earliest releases. Salem noted of the overall fell of Night Light, “There’s a lot of soul and great musical nourishment here.”

Zee, who is a Malaysian native, has recognized her as one of the Top 10 Malaysians. She won the International Youth Award in her home country in 2011. These honors have led to numerous speaking engagements around the world and performances at some of the world’s biggest festivals. Those festivals include: Borneo’s Rain Forest World Music Festival, Australia’s Byron Bay Festival, San Francisco’s Noise Pop Fesitval, Austin’s SXSW Festival, New York’s Mountain Jam Festival, Lilith Fair, Bonnaroo, and San Diego’s Street Scene. She was also just recently tapped to perform at the KiddieComm family music festival in Philadelphia, PA on June 28th.

Fans of HBO’s hit series, True Blood have been waiting anxiously for the show’s new season.  Now, a new trailer for Season Six has been released to the masses via YouTube.  And any fan of the show that lives in North Carolina will have even more reason to smile when they watch it.  That’s because Durham, North Carolina’s own Delta Rae is featured prominently in the trailer.  Or rather, the band’s music is featured.  The band’s debut single, ‘Bottom of The River’ from its Warner Brothers Records debut album, Carry The Fire is used as a music bed for the trailer.  The band was quite excited about having its music used in the trailer.  “We’ve been immense fans of True Blood since the pilot” vocalist Brittany Holljes explains.  “The show captures southern myth and the magic of American folklore — the same mysterious storytelling that inspires so much of our music. To go from dressing up like the whole cast (Yes, I was Sookie) for Halloween three years ago, to hearing our song on the trailer is utterly MIND BLOWING.”  The trailer for True Blood Season Six can be viewed on YouTube at http://youtu.be/tGgt_jllHcA.  The official video for the single can be viewed at http://youtu.be/bimam2j2gEgAnd fans can even check out a very special performance of the song with a group of young fans with Staten Island, NY’s famed PS22 Chorus.  The PS22 Chorus has also performed with Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, and a number of other famous artists.   Along with its performance of ‘Bottom of the River’, the band also performed renditions of ‘If I Loved You’, ‘Dance in the Graveyards’ and ‘Fire’ with its young fans.  Links to the performances are available via YouTube below.

Robert Randolph, Blue Note Release Details On New Album

It is finally official.  Robert Randolph makes his grand return this Summer.  The veteran musician will release his first new album in three years on July 16th via Blue Note Records.  Twelve tracks make up Lickety Split.  The longest of that set comes in at a little more than six minutes and the shortest (also the album’s closer) clocks in at just under three minutes.  Randolph explained in an interview just what fans can expect from this highly anticipated new release.  “This record has elements from all of our earlier records,” he said.  “There are cool songs with lots of guitar and we can see the growth of our band in the new recordings.” “With this record we got to reconnect with the originality and creativity that fans fell in love with from the very beginning. This is the music that we started out playing and now that we are back on a roll I’m sure we won’t keep our fans waiting three years for the next album.”

Randolph played a very large role in this record.  He co-produced the album and co-wrote nine of the album’s twelve tracks.  The album kicks off with a high energy piece in ‘Amped Up’, which is then followed up by an equally fun song in ‘Born Again.’  Randolph commented on the song, explaining its evolution from a love song of sorts to a whole other being.  “It’s about finding the joy again,” he said.  “At first it was more of a love song, about the sense you get when you find the right person. Then, as we were recording this new music with a whole new sense of direction and feeling free again it all came together. It’s not a religious thing, it’s just new energy—which is really the old energy that I had at the beginning of my career.”

Randolph also commented on what is one his own favorite songs from the album, the LP’s title song.  The album’s title track features his sister Lenesha on vocals.  “What’s great about that one is that it’s something we actually played in church, just like that,” he says. “There’s a section in the service called the ‘Jubilee Jam Session Time’.

Both Randolph and Blue Note President Don Was were very happy in the announcement of both this album and Robert’s addition to the Blue Note family.  “Robert Randolph is an American Original,” noted Was.  “He has mastered what is, arguably, the most complex instrument in the world and developed a unique voice that is equal parts street-corner church and Bonnaroo. This album finally captures the energy and excitement of his legendary live performances.” Lickety Split hits stores and online outlets Tuesday, July 16th.  The full track listing is below:

Robert Randolph and the Family Band are back.  The band has signed a new deal with legendary jazz label, Blue Note Records.  This news comes along with the announcement of a new upcoming album due out this Summer.  The long anticipated new release will be the first from Randolph since 2010’s We Walk This Road.  Blue Note president Don Was recently commented on the signing, expressing his joy at having Randolph as the label’s newest signee.  “Robert Randolph is an American original…he has mastered what is, arguably, the most complex instrument in the world and developed a unique voice that is equal parts street-corner church and Bonnaroo,” he said.  “Robert’s new studio album finally captures the energy and excitement of his legendary live performances…we are honored that he has chosen Blue Note Records as his new home.”

Randolph also shared his thoughts on having signed with Blue Note, expressing just as much excitement at this next step in his career.  “Blue note is a true music label with a 75-year history of working with great musicians like John Coletrane, Miles Davis and Al Green and the head of the label is a real musician and songwriter,” he explained.  Randolph will self produce the album, which will also feature members of his own family once again.  It will be engineered by Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin) and mixed by Jim Scott (Tedeschi Trucks Band).

Randolph will hit the road this Spring and Summer in support of his as yet untitled album.  His tour is currently slated to kick off April 6th at the River Run Rocks Series in Keystone, CO.  It’s set to run through August 16th and will include a pair of performances in North Carolina.  The first of those dates is Friday, May 10th at Wilmington, NC’s Greenfield Lake Amphitheater.  The second of his North Carolina dates is Saturday, May 11th in Beaufort, NC at the Beaufort Music Festival.  Fans can get a full list of tour dates online at http://www.facebook.com/rrtfb, http://www.robertrandolph.net, http://www.myspace.com/robertrandolph and http://twitter.com/rrtfb.
