Today, January 5th, is National Bird Day.
Odds are that most people probably have never heard of National Bird Day. For those that don’t know, National Bird Day is a day set aside each year to raise awareness of the plight of thousands of birds around the world. As is noted on the official National Bird Day website, almost twelve percent of the world’s nearly ten thousand bird species will face the risk of extinction within the next century. That equals to nearly one third of the world’s aviary population. Much of that risk comes from the illegal pet trade, habitat loss, and disease. In other words, much of the risk of extinction comes from human factors. That means that it is up to mankind to change that course for our fine-feathered friends. And there are plenty of ways that people can help make a change for the better. Information on how people can help make a difference is available online now at the official National Bird Day website at http://www.nationalbirdday.com/c_events.php.
In an effort to help raise awareness of National Bird Day and the plight of the world’s bird species, famed children’s singer Raffi has teamed up with the Born Free Foundation to give away copies of his new album Owl Singalongs. Audiences and bird lovers alike can get more information on today’s giveaways online via Raffi’s Twitter account @Raffi_RC and via the hashtag #nationalbirdday.
