Emo band Boys of Fall debuted the video for its new single this week.
The band debuted the video for its new single ‘Distance‘ Friday afternoon. The song is the lead single from the band’s sophomore album by the same name. Distance is scheduled for release Nov. 20 through InVogue Records.
The video features the band performing its song together on a darkened soundstage and combines that with a story about a couple whose relationship has clearly come to its end. It tells the story of the relationship from beginning to end through a montage of shots, ending with the man catching his girlfriend (wife?) in bed with another man. The imagery illustrates the song’s lyrical content, which itself plays into the album’s overall theme of distance and how it applies to life.
Front man Michael Martenson discussed the noted theme in a recent interview.
“Distance really talks about change,” he said. “The lengths we travel in our lives through so many situations that bring you to where you are now. It’s very personal to all of us and was the most honest expression of who we are as a band today.”
“Distance is the album title and opening track,” added Martenson. “It is everything we wanted to be as a band and exactly how we wanted to start the album. We wanted to bring the listener in to understand the story and let the emotion build and lyrics carry you through the song. Distance sets the tone for the entire record and was very unique to us and what we’ve done before. It wasn’t your typical album opener and that’s what we loved about it.”
Additionally, Martenson discussed the album’s creation during his interview.
“Distance was such a different experience and journey than I ever would have imagined going into an album,” he said. “Every band progresses and changes over time and we all collectively felt like this was the album we were supposed to make all these years. It blends the catchiness and grooviness we’ve always tried to capture while diving more into our heavier/emotional roots.”
