‘Bridges To Buenos Aires’ Continues To Show Why The Rolling Stones Is One Of Rock’s Elite Acts

The live recordings keep coming from The Rolling Stones.  Early this month, the band released another concert from its Bridges to Babylon Tour in the form of Bridges To Buenos Aires.  Originally recorded April 5, 1998 at the River Plate Stadium, the 22-song set is yet another enjoyable addition to the home library of any fan of The Rolling Stones.  That is due in part to the show’s set list.  The band’s performance thereof plays its own critical role in the show’s presentation.  The companion booklet that comes with the recording rounds out its most important elements.  Each item noted is key in its own way to the whole of this recording.  All things considered, they make the recording in whole yet another welcome addition to The Rolling Stones’ ongoing series of live recordings.

The Rolling Stones’ latest addition to its ongoing series of live recordings is yet another presentation that audiences will openly welcome into their libraries.  That is due in part to the concert’s set list.  The 22-song set list features many of the same songs featured in the band’s performance from its Bridges To Bremen show, with a handful of changes.  Once again, the band reaches back in its catalog, reaching as far back as 1967.  Fan favorites, such as ‘Start Me Up, ‘It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It)’ and ‘Gimme Shelter’ are all featured in this collection.  Others, such as ‘Memory Motel,’ ‘Anybody Seen My Baby’ and ‘Paint It Black’ are replaced here with ‘Sister Morphine,’ ‘When The Whip Comes Down’ and ‘Little Queenie,’ which reaches back to the band’s 1970 album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out.  The rest of the show’s set list in this concert is the same as that featured in Bridges To Bremen.  For those audiences who do not already own Bridges To Bremen, the expansive set list presents audiences with a rich presentation of the band’s catalog.  Along with that rarely represented album – Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out – the set list also gives nods to the band’s 1969 album Let It Bleed, its 1967 album Between The Buttons and its 1968 album Beggar’s Banquet as well as Bridges To Babylon, on the back of which the band was touring at the time.  Simply put, the set list featured in this collection will appeal to audiences who already own any of the band’s previously released live recordings (released through Eagle Rock Entertainment) and those who might not own said recordings.  It is just one of the recording’s positives.  The band’s performance of the set list plays its own important part to the whole of the recording.

The band’s performance of the concert’s set list is notable because it shows the band as a unit, at the time, that was still at the top of its game, even more than three decades into its life.  The band’s performance of ‘Little Queenie’ is one example of that high level of entertainment.  The swagger exhibited by the band as it makes its way across the hydraulic bridge and energy in its performance is commendable to say the least.  Even as something is thrown at him, front man Mick Jagger doesn’t bat even an eyelash.  He just keeps going, not missing a beat or even giving recognition to whichever audience member threw the unidentified item at him.  Drummer Charlie Watts, decked out in his soccer jersey and guitarists Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards make their way around the band’s second stage with the ease of much younger performers, showing they are right in step with their younger counterparts.  The band members’ energy in the show’s opener – ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ — provides just as much show of energy from the band as any other performance from the group.  Jagger struts his way across the stage, giving his full energy and attention to the audience and song at the same time.  Meanwhile Richards and Wood keep such a cool demeanor as they make their way through the song alongside Watts.  Much the same can be said of the band’s performance of ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash.’  It shows this band even at that point, held its own easily against every one of its younger up-and-coming counterparts, proving once more why it is one of the elite acts in the rock and music community in general.   Between these performances and those of the rest of the shows set, the whole of the band’s performance gives audiences just as much to appreciate here as the set list itself.  It is just one more part of what makes the recording so enjoyable.  The companion booklet that comes with the recording rounds out its most important elements.

The companion booklet that comes with Bridges To Buenos Aires features liner notes composed by Journalist Paul Sexton.  Sexton paints a vivid picture of the concert contained in the presentation’s Blu-ray through his words. He writes in part about the band’s performance of ‘Flip The Switch,’ noting that it “offered the first cameo for now much-missed saxophonist mainstay Bobby Keys.”  He adds later of the performance of ‘Gimme Shelter,’ that vocalist Lisa Fischer’s performance is just as powerful as ever.  There is even mention of Bob Dylan’s surprise guest appearance for the band’s take on his timeless classic ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ in Sexton’s liner notes.  He writes in part here, “Bob’s [Dylan] customarily approximate vocal style certainly kept Mick on on his toes, but the bonhomie of the moment gave further warmth to a set that was growing ever more fierce and forceful.”  Here again is more proof of the power of Sexton’s description of the show, proving even more, the importance of his preview of the concert.  Sexton has much more to add about the concert, but that will be left for audience to discover for themselves.  Between the rest of the notes not discussed here and those items addressed, it goes without saying that Sexton’s notes are recommended to be taken in prior to taking in the concert itself.  Keeping this in mind, the importance of the recording’s liner notes couples with the power of the band’s performance and the importance of the show’s set list to make the recording in whole, yet another positive addition to The Rolling Stones’ ongoing live releases series, and a presentation that any fan of The Rolling Stones will welcome into his or her music library.

‘Bridges To Bremen’ Will Certainly “Connect With” Every Rolling Stones Fan

The Rolling Stones have been in the news quite a bit lately thanks to band front man Mick Jagger’s recent health scare.  Jagger didn’t take long to recover from that scare, though, allowing the band to head back out on the road for its No Filter Tour.  While the band’s tour spans the globe, there obviously are those areas and fans who will not get the chance to catch the band in its latest outing.  For those audiences (and even for those who will get to see the band), Eagle Rock Entertainment has pulled another of the band’s archived shows from the vaults and released it for the masses in the form of Bridges to Bremen.  Released just last week, this latest addition to Eagle Rock Entertainment’s ongoing series of live Rolling Stones shows.  The concert presented in the recording was originally captured Aug. 26, 1998 in Berlin, Germany.  The concert was part of the band’s yearlong Bridges To Babylon Tour, which was in support of the band’s then new album Bridges To Babylon.  This latest addition to The Rolling Stones’ live recordings collection from Eagle Rock Entertainment is just as enjoyable for all as each of the previous recordings that Eagle Rock Entertainment has released.  That is due in part to the recording’s set list, which will be discussed shortly.  The band’s performance of said set list plays just as much a part in the concert’s enjoyment as the set list itself and will be discussed a little later.  The companion booklet featured with the recording rounds out the recording’s most important elements.  Each item noted here is important in its own way to the whole of Bridges to Bremen.  All things considered, they make Bridges to Bremen a recording that will connect with The Rolling Stones’ fans everywhere.

Eagle Rock Entertainment’s latest addition to its ongoing series of live Rolling Stones recordings is a presentation that will connect with fans of the veteran performers around the globe.  Yes, that awful pun was intended.  The recording’s appeal is due in part to its set list.  The 22-song set list (26 counting the four bonus songs from the band’s tour-opening shows at Chicago’s Soldier Field) gives presents a relatively wide cross section of the band’s catalog up to that point.  The set list reaches all the way back to the band’s 1966 album Aftermath and as far forward as Bridges To Babylon, with that album getting the most nods, at five songs.  Audiences also get plenty of familiar hits, such as ‘Paint It Black,’ ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ and ‘Honky Tonk Women’ and some lesser performed songs, such as ‘Memory Motel,’ ‘Out Of Control’ and ‘Out Of Control’ just to name a few songs.  Those lesser performed, deep cuts are addressed in the recording’s liner notes, which will be addressed later.  The set list is presented in the same chronological order on the recording’s two CDs as on its SD Blu-ray, so audiences get the same full show on both platforms.  What’s more, the set list’s sequence shows the band members’ attention to the impact of each song’s energy, as the energies of each song are balanced expertly from beginning to end.  The band knew where to keep the energy high, where to pull it back and where to push it right back up again throughout.  Simply put, the set list featured in this recording offers audiences plenty to appreciate in itself.  The foundation that it forms is strong, and is strengthened even more by the band’s performance thereof.

The band’s performance of the concert’s set list includes not just that of the band’s main four members – Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts – but the performance of the group’s fellow performers, too.  When singer Lisa Fischer hits the high notes in ‘Gimme Shelter,’ her control of her instrument displays clearly, her talents just as clearly as her performances in past Rolling Stones live recordings.  The band’s late great saxophonist Bobby Keys is just as impressive both as a supporting musician and as he gets the spotlight in ‘Miss You.’  Mick, meanwhile, handles his role as front man with the same impressive swagger as always during the group’s performance of ‘Out Of Control.’  His connection with the audience as the song ends and the audience continues singing reminds audiences why he is among the upper echelons of the industry’s top performers.  The audience keeps singing, and he so nonchalantly encourages the crowd’s enthusiasm, in turn increasing the audience’s energy.  The very fact that he so casually looks at the stage’s video screen to find which songs the fans want to hear just before the band performs ‘Memory Motel’ adds even more to that positive image.  As Keith Richards brings up Ronnie Woods’ daughter at the end of ‘Thief in The Night,’ even he shows his own charm, adding even more to the show’s interest and enjoyment.  It’s another display of the band members’ humility in that willingness to put the spotlight on the rest of the group instead of themselves.  It’s just one more way – and hardly the last – in which the band’s performance makes this recording so enjoyable.  The rest of the recording offers just as many examples of why the group’s performance is so important to the whole of Bridges to Bremen.  While it clearly adds even more to the recording’s presentation, it still is not the last of the recording’s most important elements.  The companion booklet that is featured with the recording rounds out the recording’s most important elements.

The companion booklet that comes with Bridges to Bremen is important to note because, as with the booklets included with the band’s previous live recordings, it paints a vivid picture of the concert featured within the recording.  This time, that picture is painted by writer-broadcaster Paul Sexton, who has contributed to Billboard, Music Week and broadcasts on BBC Radio 2.  Sexton’s ruminations are an important addition to the recording because of the revelations that he makes.  He reveals in his notes, that Jagger admitted to him at one point, he was concerned about the ability of the pneumatic bridge to connect from the main stage to the secondary stage even though it allowed the band to get out with the crowd without making the band get into the crowd.  Of course it worked perfectly on the night in question in this concert.  Sexton also notes in his writings, the connection of the band in whole throughout the course of the show, the ability of the band’s fans to play a role in the concert’s set list (Mick even references the fans’ choices on stage early on in the show), the fact that the concert shown here was originally broadcast across Europe at the time and the placement of the concert in the bigger picture of the tour’s schedule.  He notes the concert was one of the band’s last in the yearlong tour.  This is important to note because as deep as the band was into its run by that point, none of the band’s members showed any wear and tear.  Every performer was at the top of his and her game.  Between these notations and plenty of others featured in the recording’s companion booklet, Sexton’s notes add their own share of engagement and entertainment to the overall presentation of Bridges To Bremen.  When all of that is considered with the band’s performance and the recording’s overall set list (bonus content included), the whole of this recording becomes yet another welcome addition to the home library of any Rolling Stones fan.

The Rolling Stones To Release Another Archived Live Show This Summer

The Rolling Stones has been in the headlines a lot lately because of front man Mick Jagger’s recent health complications.  On the heels of the good news of Jagger’s recovery comes some more good news, this time about a new live Rolling Stones recording.

The band announced Friday, that it will release Bridges To Bremen on June 21 via Eagle Rock Entertainment.  Originally recorded September 2, 1998 in Bremen, Germany during the final leg of the band’s year-long Bridges To Babylon tour (which ran from 1997-1998), the recording is set for release on DVD/2CD, Blu-ray/2CD, three-disc vinyl and digital audio. A grand total of 40,000 people attended the more than two-and-a-half-hour concert.

The 22-song set opens with the band’s timeless hit song, ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ before moving into ‘Let’s Spend The Night Together.’  The show also features songs, such as ‘Memory Motel,’ ‘Thief in the Night’ and ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash.’  The show’s full set list is noted below.

Bridges To Babylon was released September 29, 1997 through Virgin Records.  The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, peaking at #3.

Along with the main show, Bridges to Bremen will also feature four extra performances that were recorded during the band’s performances at Chicago’s Soldier Field from the same tour.  The band opened its Bridges To Babylon tour in Chicago with two shows on September 23 and 25, 1997.

Eagle Rock Entertainment’s release of Bridges To Bremen will come a little more than two months after the release of the band’s latest compilation, Honk.  The three-disc collection is set for release April 19 through Interscope Records.

It reaches back to 1971 and all the way up to the band’s 2016 compilation Blue & Lonesome.  The third disc, which is included only in the compilation’s deluxe edition, features 10 live tracks recorded throughout the band’s life.
