ESPN Announces Details For Annual Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

ESPN has officially announced that it will broadcast the 2014 edition of the Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.

The annual celebrity basketball game is scheduled to be broadcast February 14th at 7pm ET.  It will be broadcast live from the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA.  This year’s broadcast marks the tenth anniversary of ESPN’s broadcast of the game. Fans can also catch the game online via WatchESPN. Veteran play-by-play man Mark Jones will have the call.  He will be joined by analyst Jon Barry and reporters Stuart Scott and Chris Broussard.

This year’s broadcast marks the first time that ESPN NBA Countdown analysts Jalen Rose and Bill Simmons will serve as coaches for the celebrity game.  Mike & Mike hosts Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg will play in the celebrity matchup for the first time ever, too.  And before the game, Mike and Mike will host their show live on-site from the Hyatt Regency hotel in New Orleans.  Fellow ESPN personalities including SportsCenter anchor Stan Verrett and three-time NBA Champion and ESPN NBA analyst Bruce Bowen will also be part of the game.

This year’s Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game is part of the NBA All-Star Jam Session.  It will feature stars from across the sports and entertainment world.  Two-time MVP Kevin Hart and America’s Got Talent host Nick Cannon will take part in this year’s game.  They will be joined by a number of other celebrities including: Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy), Columbus Short (Scandal), Michael B. Jordan (That Awkward Moment), Erin Heatherton (Victoria’s Secret model, philanthropist, actress), U.S Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, E! WNBA Has Strong Start To Season

The 2013-2014 WNBA season is off to a pretty strong start.  This weekend’s double header saw the Washington Mystics taking on the Tulsa Shock and the Chicago Sky facing off against the Phoenix Mercury.  The double header pulled in a 0.3 household coverage rating and averaged 366,000 viewers (P2+), including the most viewed regular season game on ESPN2 in nine years.  The pair of games featured the top four teams from this year’s WNBA draft presented by State Farm.  It included ESPNs “3 to See” trio of Elena Delle Donne (Chicago Sky), Skylar Diggins (Tulsa) and Brittney Griner (Phoenix).  ESPN and the ESPN family of networks will focus on the “3 to See” throughout the WNBA season.  This includes coverage online at ESPN.com and espnW.com. 

The broadcast of the Mystics/Shock Memorial Day 3pm broadcast earned a 0.3 rating with 314,000 viewers.  The 5pm game featuring the Sky and Mercury pulled a 0.4 rating with 455,000 viewers.  It was the most viewed game on ESPN2 since the Phoenix took on New York on July 11th, 2004.  That game pulled in a 0.5 rating with 487,000 viewers. 

The 2012 WNBA regular season on ESPN2 averaged a 0.2 household coverage rating.  Coverage of the 2013 WNBA season returns Saturday, June 8th at 3:30pm with a matchup of the Phoenix Mercury and the defending WNBA champion Indiana Fever.  The game is the first of the 2013 WNBA regular season.  It will air on ABC.

WNBA Kicks Off 2013-2014 Season This Weekend On ABC

The 2013-2014 WNBA season starts next Monday.  And it all kicks off with a double header on ABC.  The double header will feature the top four teams from this year’s WNBA draft presented by State Farm.  It all starts with a match between the Washington Mystics and Tulsa Shock at 3pm ET.  The Chicago Sky and Phoenix Mercury follow at 5pm ET.  Along with the games, ESPN will offer an in-depth look at course taken by the league’s top picks—The “3 To See–from college to the pros.  The “3 To See” are Elena Delle Donne (Delaware to Chicago Sky), Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame to Tulsa Shock), and Brittney Griner (Baylor to Phoenix Mercury).

ABC’s double header matchup is just part of Monday’s season opening celebration of the WNBA.  ESPN Classic will air a Memorial Day weekend marathon featuring a series of games featuring the “3 To See.”  The full slate of games is listed below.

Fans of the WNBA will also get to see the return of the Boost Mobile WNBA All-Star Game on July 27th.  The game will air that day at 3:30pm ET on ABC live from the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT.

The team of Pam Ward, Rebecca Lobo, and Carolyn Peck return once again this season to call the games, with Ward calling the play-by-play action.  Holly Rowe and LaChina Robinson will serve as reporters for select games.  Sue Bird—seven-time WNBA All-Star and two-time WNBA Champion with the Seattle Storm—will join the broadcast team this season from the ESPN Studio.  This includes the opening day double header.  Bird is sidelined this season while she recovers from left knee surgery.
