2016 was another great year for documentaries.  From ancient kings to movie magic kings and much more, the field of documentaries had plenty to offer audiences.  Believe it or not PBS showed again with its offerings why it remains the king of the documentary field and why it is the last true bastion of truly worthwhile programming on television.  It wasn’t the only outlet that offered quality documentaries this year, though.  Virgil Films and MVD Visual both had some stand out offerings, too.  Their films are included in this critic’s list of the year’s best new documentaries.

Topping this year’s list of the year’s top new documentaries is Ken Burns’ new profile of MLB great Jackie Robinson.  It isn’t the first of its kind by any means.  But it is one of the most in-depth profiles of the baseball legend.  Also included in this year’s list is a profile of another legend in his own right, Ray Harryhausen from MVD Visual in the form of Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan.  It isn’t the first of its kind, either. But its story, interviews, footage, information and editing all combine to make this presentation stand out.  There is even a pair of documentaries on the “timeless” cinema classic Back to the Future included in this list.

As with each of Phil’s Picks “Best Of” lists, this list features this critic’s top 10 choices in the given category along with five honorable mention titles for a total of 15 titles.  So without any further ado, here for you is Phil’s Picks’ 2016 Top 10 New Documentaries

Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb Is A Great Find For Any History Buff

Cleopatra is one of the most well-known figures in recorded history.  The famed “Queen of the Nile” has fascinated people the world over for centuries.  20th Century Fox (one of Hollywood’s “Big Six”) even turned out a biopic of sorts centered on Cleopatra in 1963.  The movie, starring Elizabeth Taylor (Father of the Bride, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Giant) in the lead role, earned nine Oscar® nominations and four trophies along with four Golden Globe® nominations and many other accolades.  Women to this day even dress up as Cleopatra every Halloween thanks in no small part to that movie.  For all of the interest that Cleopatra has maintained throughout the centuries some might find it interesting to know that to this day, no one actually knows where she is buried.  Many have tried and none have succeeded.  However one woman recently came closer than anyone in the search for Cleopatra’s final resting place.  And her story was recently told in a new episode of PBS’ Secrets of the Dead.  That episode, Secrets of the Dead: Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb will be available on DVD Tuesday, July 5th.  This new episode of SOTD is just as welcome in the classroom as the living room.  That is due in large part to the episode’s story.  The story is just one of the elements that make this program so interesting.  The information that is presented over the course of the nearly hour-long program is just as important to note as the story itself.  The program’s pacing rounds out the program’s most important elements.  Each element is important in its own right to the program.  Altogether they make Secrets of the Dead: Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb a presentation a must have for any history buff whether in the classroom or the living room.

Secrets of the Dead: Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb is a must have for any history buff whether in the classroom or in the living room.  That is due in large part to the program’s story.  The story centers on the efforts of lawyer-turned-archaeologist Dr. Kathleen Martinez as she searches for Cleopatra’s tomb.  While the program is a documentary, one can’t help but be interested in this story because it is a sort of underdog tale.  As is noted in the program both in narration and by Dr. Martinez, she had quite a number of detractors when she turned from law to archaeology.  That is because of how little professional experience she had in archaeology.  What’s more she chased leads and theories that most others had ignored because they felt that those leads were so impossible.  Yet in following those leads, she came closer in her search than any researcher ever had or even has.  The progress and success that she had in her search surprised everybody including both her now former detractors and herself.  So while the story is on the surface, a documentary, it is also a story that audiences will enjoy and that will especially empower female viewers.  In whole, the story presented in this episode of SOTD is an important element in the episode’s presentation.  It isn’t the episode’s only key element, though.  The information shard throughout the course of the program is just as important as the episode’s story.

The story at the center of SOTD: Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb is unquestionably an important part of the episode’s presentation.  On the surface, it is a documentary.  On another level, it is an underdog story of sorts that will keep audiences engaged and entertained.  It will also potentially empower female audiences because of the woman at the center of the story and her accomplishments.  As important as the story is to this episode of SOTD it is only one of the episode’s key elements.  The information provided over the course of the episode is just as important to note as the episode’s story.  One of the most interesting pieces of information that is shared in this episode is the note about 20th Century Fox’s take on Cleopatra’s life.  While the movie earned an impressive amount of accolades, it is apparently anything but historically accurate.  That should be no surprise at all considering how few of Hollywood’s bio pics past and present boast any full accuracy.  It is still interesting to learn just how far off the mark the movie was.  Just as interesting to learn from this episode is just how far off the mark previous excavations might have been in the search for Cleopatra’s burial place.  That is supported by the amount of evidence uncovered by Dr. Martinez in her efforts.  On a related note the revelation about the many believed sites where Cleopatra might be buried.  It is intriguing to find out the vast spread of potential burial sites.  These are just a few of the interesting pieces of information shared over the course of this episode of SOTD.  There is much more for audiences to discover for themselves in watching this episode.  Needless to say, those other pieces of information join with the material noted here to prove in full why the content provided in SOTD: Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb is just as important to this program as its story.  It still is not the last remaining key element either.  The program’s pacing rounds out its presentation.

Both the story at the center of SOTD: Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb and its content are both key to the program’s presentation.  While both elements are undeniably important to the program’s presentation they are not its only key elements.  The program’s pacing is just as important to its presentation as those elements.  Viewers will note that the program’s pacing is relatively stable from beginning to end.  From the time that viewers are introduced to Dr. Martinez and presented with her back story to her search for the legendary queen’s final resting place, each part of the story receives just enough attention.  Even as the program focuses on Cleopatra’s own back story, that story isn’t allowed to dominate the program.  Each segment is expertly balanced against the others.  The end result is a program that will keep audiences fully engaged from beginning to end.  In turn audiences will see for themselves the importance of the program’s story and its overall content, too.  They will see that in whole all three elements make this program a must have for any history buff both in the classroom and the living room.

Secrets of the Dead: Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb is a must have for any history buff whether in the classroom or in the living room.  It is an impressive new addition to the already extensive list of programs produced by PBS about Egypt and its rich history.  That is due in part to the program’s dual-part story.  The content that makes up the body of the story is just as important to note in its presentation.  The overall pacing of the program rounds out the program’s most important elements.  Each element is important in its own way to the program’s presentation.  Altogether they make Secrets of the Dead: Cleopatra’s Lost Tomb a program that is, again, a must have for any history buff whether in the classroom or in the living room.  It will be available Tuesday, July 5th and can be ordered online direct via PBS’ online store.  More information on this and other episodes of Secrets of the Dead is available online now at:

Chihuahua Too A Fun, Family Friendly Film For Any Halloween Party Or Fall Festival

Courtesy: Entertainment One

Halloween is just around the corner once again.  That means that before we know it, lots and lots of little ghouls, ghosts, princesses and more will be making their yearly rounds around neighborhoods, malls, and even churches.  Some will also be heading to the associated Halloween parties with their friends and parents.  This means that parents are going to be looking for family friendly fare to share at said get-togethers.  Parents of young ladies would do well to start at the latest canine-centric small screen release, Chihuahua Too.  The sequel to the company’s 2011 movie, simply titled Chihuahua is not a sequel to that movie.  Nor is it a ripoff of Disney’s Buddy franchise.  Though, it can be agreed that it does capitalize on the aforementioned franchise.  EOne isn’t the first franchise to do this, either in its defense.  Keeping this in mind, Chihuahua Too ends up being a good family friendly movie for younger female audiences’ Halloween parties.

Chihuahua Too is the latest family friendly release from Engine 15 Media Group, the company responsible for other canine based movies such as the Bailey trilogy just to name one group of movies.  Chihuahua Too is different from those movies in that it has no link to the previous film in its franchise.  It is its very own stand-alone story.  Much like Engine 15’s other releases though, it maintains a positive message.  The message presented in Chihuahua Too is one of the importance of family.  The message is set up by having a young family that goes by the name of The Fasteners taking on a house once owned by its ancestors.  There’s just one catch.  The Fasteners aren’t alone in the house.  The house is haunted by the spirit of a dog once owned by the Fasteners’ ancestors.  The reason why the dog, named Sophie, is still in the house is revealed late in the story.  And it’s that reveal that plays up the message of family.

The message of family is the most important factor of Chihuahua Too.  It’s just part of what families and churches will appreciate about this piece for their Halloween parties and Fall Festival celebrations.  Engine 15 Media Group is most well-known for churning out movies that are entirely family friendly.  This is another positive to this latest release from Engine 15.  There is no questionable content whatsoever at any point in the story.  Sure, the acting could have been better.  But this isn’t a big budget production.  And Engine 15 isn’t a major studio.  So those audiences that would prefer to talk and write negative things concerning the acting and general production values need to keep this in mind and watch it again.  Perhaps in doing so, they will see the more intrinsic value of the feature, and appreciate it more.

The positive message about family and the family friendly content that make up Chihuahua Too are both important parts of the story’s overall presentation.  There is one factor in this movie that has a latent effect on audience.  Or rather, one would hope that it would have a latent effect.  The hoped for latent effect of the story presented here is of an appreciation for classic movies.  Some might consider this a stretch.  But today’s movie industry pales by comparison to the golden era of Hollywood.  Cohen Media Group, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox and others have proven in recent years (2013 included) that there is still very much a market for classic films.  Maybe in being exposed to faux silent films, young audiences will gain a new interest in classics such as Cleopatra or other classics.  Who knows, maybe it will even influence the parents of said children to become interested in the classics.  On a side note, Cleopatra has been re-issued on a 50th Anniversary Blu-ray set by 20th Century Fox.  It’s available now in stores and online.  Chihuahua Too is also available now in stores and online.  It can be ordered via Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D3XMJMI/ref=s9_simh_gw_p74_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1DM9RH2JPP6ETJ128JM3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846.

Richard Burton Being Honored With Star On Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Veteran actor Richard Burton will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Burton will be honored at a ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, March 1st.  His star will be placed next to that of Elizabeth Taylor.  The placement is largely symbolic as it honors the duo’s relationship both on-screen and off.  The ceremony is planned to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of Cleopatra.  Taylor and Burton co-starred in the movie as the Queen of the Nile herself and her lover, Mark Antony.  Cleopatra will be re-issued on Blu-ray this year.  A release date for the upcoming re-issue has not yet been made official.

The effort to give Burton a star was led by Welsh business academic professor Dylan Jones-Evans.  His effort was made on behalf of the Western Mail, the official newspaper of Wales.  Jones was very happy when asked about the news of Burton’s new honor.  “I am delighted that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has agreed to partner with us to recognise one of Wales’ greatest ever actors with a star as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of Cleopatra,” he said.  “I am also sure all the people of Wales will be thrilled that he is receiving this accolade on the most special day for the Welsh nation, St. David’s Day.”

Mary Daily, President of Worldwide Marketing Chief Marketing Officer of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment also offered her thoughts on the news.  “Richard Burton remains one of the greatest actors of his generation whose iconic voice, rugged good looks and talent knew no bounds.  From My Cousin Rachel, which cemented Burton as a Hollywood leading man to The Robe and the Blockbuster Cleopatra, Burton is an integral part of the 20th Century Fox Legacy and we look forward to celebrating his contribution to stage and film with the country of Wales and the rest of the world.”

Burton, who was the son of a Welsh coal miner, started his career as a distinguished Shakespearian stage actor.  It was his role in Cleopatra that led to his eventual marriage to Taylor.  The pair’s marriage made headlines the world over.  They went on to star in nine other films together, including: The Taming of the Shrew, The V.I.Ps, and Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf?  This latter film garnered Taylor her second Oscar for Best Actress.
