Ellefson, Soto Team Up For Riot Classic

Two rocck titans have partnered to re-imagine a Riot classic.

Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson and Sons of Apollo front man Jeff Scott Soto have teamed up to take on Riot’s classic song, ‘Swords & Tequila.’ The original song was featured on Riot’s 1981 album, Fire Down Under.

Ellefson talked about taking on the song during a recent interview.

“The first time I ever heard of Riot was on the Castle Donington Monters of Rock album from 1980,” said Ellefson. For me, they were the USA representatives during the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. And, “Swords & Tequila”, along with the entire Fire Down Under album for that matter, show the band delivering it’s rowdy and high energy rock n roll like no other band in the USA was doing at that time. So, it is an honor to offer them much deserved reverence, as well as a reminiscent tribute to the mighty Guy Speranza, who fronted the band like a god during that period.

Soto expanded on Ellefson’s comments.

“What can I say? This was a classic metal track from Riot that we all knew growing up,” he said. “When David brought up that we should cover it I was thrilled. But when we added Rick Hughes from the band Sword onto it, it truly came to life! 40 years after its release, we hope you dig this new version we built for you!”

The duo’s updated take, which also features Andy Martongelli on guitar, Paolo Caridi on drums, and a special guest appearance by Riot tribute band Swords & Tequila front man Rick Huges, stays largely true to its source material. The most notable difference between the two versions is that the new version’s sound is fuller and richer than that of its predecessor.

Hughes also shared his thoughts on taking part in the song’s creation.

“To me, music has always been the best medicine and that is why in this time of not being able to perform with live musicians in front of a live audience, I was more than happy to participate in this camaraderie of seasoned musicians,” he said.

The collective’s cover of ‘Swords & Tequila’ is available now through Ellefson’s Combat Records. More information on the song is available along with all of the latest Combat Records news at:

Dead By Wednesday Debuts New Single, ‘Mars In Exile,’ Companion Lyric Video

Courtesy: Combat Records

Dead By Wednesday debuted the video for its latest single over the weekend.

The band debuted the lyric video for its new single ‘Mars in Exile‘ Sunday. The song’s debut comes more than three months after the debut of the band’s then latest single, ‘S.O.S.,’ which the band released Oct. 5.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Mars in Exile’ is an interesting presentation. The pairing of the screams and clean vocals, coupled with the guitars lends itself to comparisons at times, to works from Killswitch Engage. At other points in the song, the thrash style riffs take listeners back to the heyday of that genre.

The lyrical content that accompanies the song’s musical arrangement will generate its own interest. At times, it leads to the supposition that perhaps it focuses on the familiar topic of a broken relationship. At other points in the song, it comes across more as a person telling perhaps a detractor that he is defying that person’s expectations. No full explanation on the song’s lyrical theme was provided in information that was sent about the theme, so this is only this critic’s own interpretation.

‘Mars in Exile’ is available to stream and download here.

Ellefson Announces Release Date, Cover Art For Forthcoming Covers Compilation

Courtesy: Combat Records

Megadeth bassist David Ellefson’s band Ellefson will release a new covers compilation this fall.

The band is scheduled to release its new covers compilation album No Cover Oct. 2 on Combat Records.  The album will feature covers of songs from bands, such as Judas Priest, Queen and Dead Kennedys.  The 13-song record’s track listing will be announced soon.

Pre-orders are open now for No Cover.  The compilation was produced by Ellefson and EMP Label Group Co-founder Thom Hazaert with guitarist Andy Martongelli.  Alessio Garavello, Matt LaPlant (Nonpoint, Lil Jon, Skindred), and John Aquilino co-engineered the record.  Garavello, Ellefson, Randy Burns and others handled mixing duties for the album.

Ellefson talked about the record’s genesis in a recent interview.

“Before any of us started writing our own songs, we all began playing cover songs by our heroes during our formative years as musicians,” said Ellefson.  “So, it’s fun to go back in time and revisit those songs which helped us to become the artists we are today, especially when, ironically, many of those artists have now become peers and friends. During the process of recording some covers for B-Sides and bonus tracks for the upcoming Ellefson solo LP, Thom and I just said, “This is a blast, let’s just do a whole album of covers!” Literally, within 2 weeks, we had the songs recorded, and began calling our friends to join us, many of whom we had just performed with on the MEGA-Cruise back in October. From there, the album just fell into place.”

“A lot of our buddies have been playing covers and quarantine jams on the Internet during the pandemic, so this is really just an extension of that, but we took it the next level and actually recorded a full studio album,” he added.” We’ve been working remotely anyway, as we’re all over the Globe, so it was easy to incorporate some guests jumping in with some outstanding performances of their own. It’s been a really fun nod to making great music with our friends, who are kick-ass players, and many legends in their own right, which is the whole reason we got into this in the first place!”

Hazert expanded on Ellefson’s comments with his own thoughts.

“It’s all songs and artists that really mutually influenced both myself and David, especially a lot of early “Metal” and harder Classic Rock,” he said. “Some stuff I picked, some stuff he picked, but for the most part is was all artists that we both loved. What’s funny, as there’s a bit of an age gap, we were sometimes more influenced by different eras of the same bands. But it was really him saying, “Let’s do this song”, and me saying, “Yes!!! And let’s do this song.” And before we knew it, we had over 15 songs. And it’s a lot of album tracks, deep cuts, early tracks, stuff people might not expect, which was what was so fun.”

“It was also great that we were able to work in a lot of nods to David’s [Ellefson] history, getting Chuck Behler to play with us, bringing in original Megadeth guitarist Greg Handevidt to play on “Love Me Like A Reptile”, a song they used to play in cover bands together before they moved to LA (which we wrote about in More Life With Deth), and Randy Burns is going to mix a track or two,” added Hazert.  “As a singer, these are literally bands I’ve listened to, and covered all my life, and for me, getting to play with Eddie Ojeda, the Tesla guys, Charlie Benante, Jason McMaster, Mark Slaughter, etc, and sing these songs that mean so much to me. I mean, literally, the entire record is my bucket list of people I’d love to play with, and some of my favorite bands. So, it’s truly an honor to put together something so fun, and really as effortless as this was. It truly is a love letter to Rock N’ Roll, an homage to what made us, musically, who we are today.”

Ellefson resurrected Combat Records in 2017 as part of the EMP Label Group family.

Combat Records was a seminal punk and thrash record label in the 1980s.  Its doors closed in the mid-2000s after its catalog was absorbed by Sony Music.  Combat Records’ official relaunch took place in 2018.

Ellefson said in an interview in 2017, Combat Records would handle only new music because Sony has control of the label’s back catalog.

“…And to clarify, we do not own any rights to the Combat Records back catalog,” Ellefson stressed. “That is owned and controlled by Sony, and they have done a great job of curating it through other imprints. Combat Records will solely focus on new releases under the Combat banner. As always, thank you for your support and stay tuned for more details!”

Post Malone, His Dad Appear On Dave Ellefson Streaming Broadcast Show

Courtesy: O’Donnell Media Group

Rapper Post Malone and his dad Rich made an appearance on Dave Ellefson’s More Nights With DE/TH live stream show this week.

The father and son appeared on the hour-long-plus live program Wednesday.  Audiences can watch the replay of the show here.  Malone talked about topics, such as life in Utah, Megadeth and beer pong with Ellefson and co-host Thom Hazert over the course of the broadcast.

The elder Malone appeared ahead of his son’s appearance.  He talked with Hazert and Ellefson for more than half an hour during his appearance.  One of the topics that he discussed was the beginning of his son’s (whose birth name is Austin) career.

“I’ve always been shilling for my kid“, said Rich. “To everyone at work, I’m like, “Hey check this out, Austin did it. So, it might get 500 views. And I’m like 500 views, wow, 500 people are listening to my kid. And then “White Iverson” came out, with the help of Wiz Khalifa, and some other folks in Dallas, a guy named Greg Mason, they tweeted it out, and next thing you know it’s got 1000 views. And then I said, wouldn’t it be great if it got to 5000 views. And I woke up the next morning, and it was at 100,000. And then it’s been a sprint to keep up with it for the last 5 years. He was opening for Fetty Wap, then Bieber. I can’t keep up with it. But I’m hoping that he opens up for you guys someday, then I’ll know he really made it.”

Along with all of this , the announcement was also made during Wednesday’s online broadcast, that Malone’s single ‘Over Now’ will receive the re-issue treatment soon.  Pre-orders for the yellow vinyl (which will be available in a limited number of copies) will open Friday through Combat Records.  The re-issue will also feature a remix of the song as a b-side, produced by Randy Burns, who produced Megadeth’s hit album Peace SellsBut Who’s Buying?

Ellefson and his namesake band released a re-worked version of ‘Over Now’ last month through its official Youtube channel and official Bandcamp page. The band’s cover is expected for inclusion on the band’s as-yet untitled album, which is due out this fall.

The song’s arrangement is a heavy rap-rock style composition that adds in screaming vocals and heavy down-tuned guitars accompanied by full-throttle double-bass-centered time keeping for its foundation.

According to information available at genius.com, Malone’s song, which is featured in his 2018 album Beerbongs and Bentleys, is centered on the end of a relationship that happened as the result of the revelation about the relationship by the song’s subject.

Hazaert talked about the genesis of Ellefson’s cover of Malone’s song in a recent interview.

“As I actually told him [Malone], some of my stuff on Sleeping Giants was heavily influenced by Beerbongs and Bentleys, which I spent 2 months on tour last year driving around the country listening to on repeat, which was really where the impetus for the cover came from,” Hazert said. “So, it was a huge honor to put our stamp on this song, and pay my respects to what he does, and how much I appreciate it. And I think the emotions and dynamic of the song really lend themselves to the heavier arrangement. Posty is a Rock and Metal guy at heart, and I think ‘Over Now’ is definitely a Metal song at heart.”

Ellefson added his own thoughts to the discussion.

“We’re all fans of Posty, and he’s also been a huge fan of Megadeth and all things metal,” he said. “Aside from being a great song for any genre, our cover of “Over Now” is our way of showing our mutual admiration and paying homage to our friend.”

Dave Ellefson Debuts ‘Sleeping Giants’ Video

Courtesy: Combat Records/EMP Label Group

Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson released his solo debut album last month, and this week, debuted the video for the album’s lead single.

Ellefson, who also heads EMP Label Group, debuted the video Sleeping Giants‘ lead single Friday.  the video features guest appearances from Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Bumblefoot, Ilias Papadakis (Memorain), Steve Conley (Flotsam  and Jetsam) and Ellefson’s fellow EMP Label Group head Tom Hazaert.

Ellefson talked about the collaboration in a recent interview.

“It was truly an honor to collaborate with DMC, and I think the track came out great,” he said.  “When Thom and DMC wanted to do a collaboration with us, I instantly thought of ‘Sleeping Giants.’  When he [McDaniels] came out to Revolution in Amityville to perform with us and shoot the video, it was an awesome energy.  I think everyone there got a show they won’t ever forget.”

Hazaert expanded on Ellefson’s comments.

“David had all these great instrumental songs laying around, and ‘Sleeping Giants’ was one of them,” he said.  “He suggested I write and record some vocal parts for them, so I called up DMC andasked if he’d want to collaborate with us on a track, and we got to work.  I’ve always loved off-the-wall metal/hip-hop collaborations (E.g. ‘Judgement Night’ — from Onyx and Biohazard) and I think ‘Giants’ definitely draws from that.  The song and video both ended up with a really cool aggressive, old-school New York hardcore/hip-hop feel.  In my book, it doesn’t get any more legendary than Run DMC.  This was definitely one for the history books.”

The video for ‘Sleeping Giants’ was shot on location in Amityville, NY and the Salton Sea in California.  Hazaert and Melody Myers co-directed the video.  It was filmed and edited by Myers/Designed by Melody (Altitudes and Attitude, Escape The Fate).

Sleeping Giants was released July 19 through EMP Label Group and Combat Records.  The record is a compilation of new music from Ellefson as well as demos and previously unreleased material that spans Ellefson’s career outside that with Megadeth.

One of those previously unreleased tracks is the song ‘If You Were God,’ which features a guest appearance from John Bush (Anthrax, Armored Saint).  The CD version features a bonus compilation of artists and songs that are in the EMP and Combat Records stables.

Wrath Premieres ‘Draw Blood’ Lyric Video

Veteran thrash outfit Wrath released the lyric video for its latest single this week.

The band premiered the lyric video for ‘Draw Blood‘ Sept. 17 via YouTube.  The song is taken from the band’s forthcoming album Rage, which is currently scheduled to be released Oct. 5 via Combat/EMP Label Group.

Musically speaking, this song will appeal easily to fans of Prong, Slayer and other similar acts.  Lyrically speaking, the song comes across as a certain commentary.  What exactly is the precise target was not discussed in the press release for the video’s release.  But it seems to be addressing certain religious zealot types.  This is inferred as front man Gary Golwitzer says, “Can you see what I see/Brainwashed minds spreading disease/Rise up/Time to stop the hate/All together/We control our fate/As one/We can win this fight/United front darkens the night.”  He goes on to sing in the song’s second verse, “Religious thoughts poison their minds/No escape from their kind/Say nothing/Don’t want to offend/Lie down/The bastards, they will win/Insane from all of their lies/Religious thoughts have poisoned their minds.”

It’s not clear which group the song addresses, but even despite that, such lyrical content, coupled with the song’s driving musical arrangement makes it a powerful entry in the overall picture of Rage.

Rage was produced by Chris Dujuricic, and mixed and mastered by Bill Metoyer (Slayer, Sacred Reich, Sacred Heart).  The album’s cover art was developed by Ipoet Poetra/Five Milligams and Wrath.

Originally crafted as the follow-up to the band’s 1990 album Insane Society, some of its tracks reach back to 1989.  It even features a cover of Motorhead’s hit song ‘Ace of Spades.’  The record’s full track listing is noted below.

Tracklist:
1. CONFLICT
2. WHAT YOU CRAVE
3. DRAW BLOOD
4. TENSION ON HIGH
5. MY RAGE
6. FEEDING THE HOST
7. CLEARING MY SOUL
8. UNHOLY ALLIANCE
9. MOTHER’S HELL
10. ACE OF SPADES (Featuring Jeff Duncan)

The band will perform a trio of live dates next month in support of Rage alongside Combat Records label mates Green Death for EMP Label Group hhead Dave Ellefson’s BASSTORY tour.  The tour launches Oct. 4 in Lombard, IL.  Its current schedule is noted below.

10/4 Lombard, IL – Brauer House (w/ Green Death, WRATH)
10/5 Sturtevant, WI – Route 20 Outhouse(w/ Green Death, WRATH)10/6 Ringle, WI – Q and Z Expo Center (w/ Green Death, WRATH)
