Madeleine Peyroux’s ‘Careless Love’ Is An Example Of A Re-Issue Done Mostly Right

Courtesy: Rounder Records/Craft Recordings

Jazz vocalist Madeleine Peyroux has been back in the news this year.  That is because Peyroux re-issued her 2004 sophomore album Careless Love last month on 2CD and digital platforms and followed up that re-issue with a vinyl pressing of the re-issue Friday.  The re-issues came through Rounder Records (which released the album in its initial presentation) and Craft Recordings.  Coming more than 17 years after the album’s original release and a little more than three years after the release of her latest album, Anthem, the re-issue is a little bit of a headscratcher.  That is because of that time frame.  Typically, re-issues come on anniversaries that end in “5” and “0.”  That aside, the presentation is still positive.  That is due to the bonus concert that is featured with the recording.  While that bonus concert is a positive, no doubt, the re-issue’s packaging proves somewhat problematic.  It is not enough to make the re-issue a failure, but also cannot be ignored.  Getting back to the bonus concert, its production values make for their own appeal.  It will also be discussed later.  Each item noted here is important in its own way to the whole of Careless Love’s re-issue.  All things considered, they make the record a prime example of a re-issue done right, regardless of genre.

The new re-issue of Madeleine Peyroux’s 2004 album Careless Love is a presentation that her established audiences and casual jazz fans will love.  That is due in no small part to the bonus concert featured with the re-issue.  The 14-song presentation is an almost complete performance of that album.  Recorded July 15, 2005 at Festival de Jazz de Vitoria-Gasteiz, its presentation here marks the first time that it has ever seen the light of day as an official release from Peyroux.  It also features some other songs to boost the enjoyment even more.  The performance put on by Peyroux and her fellow musicians leaves on to imagine thoughts of one of those well-lit high class social clubs that Hollywood has romanticized in so many period flicks.  The group’s subtle performance is that immersive.  Add in that this is apparently technically Peyroux’s first live release and that many audiences are still chomping at the bit for live music to this day due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it becomes that much more appealing and important to this re-issue.  It’s too bad that no full audiovisual (DVD/BD) platform was made available for the concert, but maybe one day.  Regardless, the full set list and the performance of Peyroux and all involved makes the live show such a key part of the re-issue’s presentation that everyone will appreciate.

While the concert featured in Careless Love’s re-issue is so impressive, the presentation is not perfect.  The packaging thereof proves somewhat problematic.  The problem comes specifically in how the re-issue’s two discs are placed in the gatefold, “paper” package.  Audiences have to squeeze that packaging in order to slide the discs out of there respective spots in the packaging.  From there, audiences have to pinch the discs on the edges and pull them out in order to get to them.  Herein lies the problem.  On one hand, the constant squeezing will put wear and tear on the packaging.  It will put more wear and tear on this packaging than what would be put on a typical plastic case.  Add in having to pinch the disc afterward in order to get to the discs, and the risk of the packaging to rip as wear and tear continues.  Additionally, the sliding of the discs in and out, rather than pulling them from a spindle on a plastic plate makes more likely that the discs can and will get marred.  That is because they will rub more against the packaging than if they were placed on the noted plastic plate, which is used in typical plastic cases.  So again, this re-issue’s packaging is problematic.  Now as long as audiences are careful, that wear and tear will happen more slowly.  Regardless, it will happen more than would happen with a more typical plastic case.  So again, this is a problem, but not enough to make the re-issue a failure.  It just cannot be ignored.

Getting back to the positive that is the re-issue’s bonus concert, the production thereof works with the content and performances thereof to round out the re-issue’s most important items.  Audiences can hear the crowd noise from the show, which adds to the positive of the listening experience.  It adds a special positive nuance to that experience that will leave listeners feel as if they are right there.  Additionally, the balance of each performer’s part throughout the concert is just as deserving of applause.  The size and construction of the venue where the concert was recorded is unknown, considering it was only released on CD.  Regardless, the sound levels of all things involved are expertly handed.  At no point does one performer’s work outweight that of his/her fellow musicians.  It is all balanced so well.  Add in that it all takes that noted airy sense at the production’s base into account, too.  That consideration adds even more to the sense that listeners are right there, too.  The sensation that all of this creates in listeners minds means that audiences get the best seat in the house even at home, in their cars and elsewhere.  Keeping that in mind along with the importance of the recording’s set list and performance thereof, the whole makes the concert an excellent addition to Careless Love’s presentation.  In turn, that and the presentation of the original album in whole makes the album overall a win for Peyroux and her fans.

Madeleine Peyroux’s new re-issue of Careless Love is a positive presentation.  The re-issue’s success comes in large part through the presentation of its bonus concert.  The concert is a near full performance of the original album.  The performances presented throughout make the concert all the more enjoyable.  While the concert is a clear bonus, the re-issue’s packaging detracts from the presentation.  That is because of how easily the packaging, and in turn the discs, can be damaged.  It is not enough to make the re-issue a failure, but at the same time cannot be ignored.  The concert’s production works with its content to enhance the listening experience even more.  Each item examined here is important in its own right to the whole of the re-issue.  All things considered, they make the presentation a prime example of the mostly right way to present a re-issue, regardless of genre.

Madeleine Peyroux’s re-issue of Carless Love is available now.  Peyroux is also in the midst of a tour in support of the record.  The tour’s current schedule is noted below.

Drowning Pool’s Debut Getting The Vinyl Treatment; Band Announces New Live Dates

Courtesy: Craft Recordings/Wind-Up Records

Drowning Pool has partnered with Craft Recordings to re-issue Drowning Pool’s debut album.

The recording, Sinner, is scheduled for release on vinyl Sept. 17 through Craft Recordings. Pre-orders are open. The re-issue, which marks the 20th anniversary of the album’s original release, is the first ever vinyl presentation for the record.

Front man Jason Moreno had only positive things to say of Drowning Pool and Sinner during a recent interview.

Sinner is literally perfect,” said Moreno. I remember hearing and seeing it all come together.  We shared the local Dallas scene back then—Drowning Pool and an old band I used to be in—and I’d like to say we kept each other honest and made each other better through competition…but it was never even close. Dave and the guys were the dudes shaping the scene. I shared many stages with Drowning Pool before I was ever their lead singer, and I remember feeling hyped after each performance. I remember believing we’d finally upstaged them. I would have that hope right up until they took the stage and began to play, and then the truth was evident—Dave, Stevie, C.J., and Mike were always multiple steps ahead of any other band on the scene.”

Added Moreno, “The Sinner album was magic, and the guys were on fire. I believe that the record is perfect as a whole, full of catchy hooks both vocally and musically. I heard and saw those songs before a million other people around the world did, and I knew back then that Drowning Pool was destined to win. It feels crazy to go from a hater to their frontman, but let that be my testimony to the undeniable force that remains Sinner.”

Drummer Mike Luce expanded on Moreno’s comments with his own thoughts.

“To be here marking twenty years of Sinner is just mind-blowing,” said Luce. “There are so many memories of this record that I’ll carry for life.  It would require a book to properly express all that’s in my head and heart and all that led up to and came out of its release. As a kid growing up and playing drums, I dreamed of being in a band with my buds and maybe someday putting out a record. Well, we did – and it kicked ass! Thanks to all that allowed this messed-up, work-in-progress of a soul to live a dream.”

Sinner peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and certified platinum following its release in June 2001 through Wind-up Records. Its lead single, ‘Bodies,’ reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart, and No. 3 on the UK’s Rock and Metal Chart. Additionally, the song gained popularity through use in televised World Wrestling Entertainment events, and various TV ads and shows, as well as movies.

Sinner‘s track listing is noted below.

Sinner tracklist:

Side A

1.     Sinner

2.     Bodies

Two New ‘Peanuts’ Music Playlists Streaming Online

Courtesy: Sugar Mountain PR

Peanuts fans have two new ways to celebrate the franchise’s history.

Craft Recordings has curated two new playlists that celebrate the music of Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi. The playlists’ debut come less than a month after Craft Recordings debuted another playlist that features music from the Peanuts movies and TV specials.

The two new playlists are composed separately of “Easy Listening” and “Dance” songs that were featured in the noted movies and TV specials. Audiences will find that some of the songs featured in these two new lists are also featured in Craft Recordings’ initial Vince Guaraldi playlist, but are now more distinctly classified from one another in the noted new lists.

In related news, Craft Recordings recently premiered a new animated video for the beloved song, ‘The Great Pumpkin Waltz.’ The song is featured in the timeless Peanuts primetime TV special It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.

The video opens with Linus’ classic letter to The Great Pumpkin, asking for lots of toys. From there, the curtain lifts to show Linus in the pumpkin patch in which he waited all that fateful night with Sally for The Great Pumpkin. As the video progresses, a series of pumpkins and presents wrapped in orange with green ribbons fill the screen against a constantly changing backdrop, all the while the song playing over the video.

‘The Great Pumpkin Waltz’ was last featured on the 2012 CD re-issue of A Charlie Brown Christmas‘ soundtrack as one of two bonus tracks. The other bonus track was one of the songs from the Peanuts primetime Thanksgiving TV special A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Neither song is featured in Craft Recordings’ recently released vinyl re-issue of the soundtrack, which is at least the seventh of the soundtrack’s re-issues.

Craft Recordings’ JLH Box Set Is A Wonderful Tribute To Music Royalty

Courtesy: Craft Recordings/Concord Music Group

Early this past August, the music community stopped for a moment to remember John Lee Hooker. The beloved, legendary bluesman would have celebrated his 100th birthday Aug. 22. In honor of the milestone, Craft Recordings, a division of Concord Music Group, released a brand new five-disc, 100-song collection of Hooker’s songs in the form of John Lee Hooker: King of the Boogie only months later on Oct. 6. Originally scheduled for release Sept. 29, the multi-disc compilation is not the first compilation of the famed musician’s works, but it is an impressive new collection nonetheless. That is proven in part through the collection’s featured songs, which will be discussed shortly. The set’s packaging is just as important to note here as its song selection, and will be discussed later. Last but most definitely not least of note in this collection is its average price point. Each element is critical in its own way to the recording’s whole. All things considered, they make John Lee Hooker: King of the Boogie a wonderful musical tribute to a wonderful musical mind.

Craft Recordings’ recently released John Lee Hooker box set King of the Boogie is, simply put, a wonderful musical tribute to a wonderful musical mind. That is due in no small part to the 100 songs that make up the collection’s body. Those songs form the foundation of the set’s presentation. What makes them stand out is the picture that they paint of Hooker’s rich career. Though not presented in chronological order, it does paint a broad, rich picture of Hooker’s career. The collection takes audiences all the way back to Hooker’s earliest days with the likes of ‘Maudie,’ ‘Time is Marching’ and ‘I Love You Honey,’ all of which were released in 1959. It also takes audiences through Hooker’s career with songs from the 60s, 70s and beyond in the likes of ‘Goin’ Mad Blues’ (1969), ‘Unfriendly Woman’ (1977), ‘It serves Me Right’ (1980), ‘Spellbound’ (1997), and ‘When I Lay My Burden Down’ (2017) among so many others. As if the studio recordings are not enough, the set also includes a full disc dedicated solely to Hooker’s live works. That disc, the set’s fourth disc, features live recordings reaching all the way back to 1960. It also features a variety of archived live performances released as recently as 2002 alongside brand new, previously unreleased live performances released for the first time in this collection. Those live recordings add even more depth to the box set’s presentation. Simply put, the songs featured in this collection present one of the most vivid pictures of Hooker’s career that has been released to date. It is not just another random collection put out for the sake of making money. It truly is a celebration of the life and career of a music legend. The set’s featured songs do plenty to celebrate John Lee Hooker’s life and legacy in this new box set, but are not the only items, collectively that serve to celebrate the musical icon so well. The set’s overall packaging goes a long way toward celebrating Hooker and his achievements, too.

King of the Boogie‘s packaging offers audiences just as much to appreciate as its featured songs. Rather than just being a standard, bulky, square box, Craft Recordings has presented the set as a book, with each of its discs inserted safely throughout. It’s an aesthetic element, but still a positive nonetheless. The liner notes presented throughout the book, crafted by John Lee Hooker historian Jas Obrecht and Hooker’s longtime friend Mike Kappus offer their own insight and entertainment for audiences. That is thanks to the fact that the pair does not pull any punches, presenting Hooker’s highs and lows. Along with the fully engaging stories told by Kappus and Obrecht is a bevy of pictures that illustrate the pair’s stories even more both literally and figuratively. The pictures included in the book included ones of him with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, Hooker with Bonnie Raitt, and solo studio shots of Hooker from his early days alongside other live shots from throughout his career. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then those and the set’s other pictures would certainly have plenty to say, making the set’s presentation that much richer, in turn, showing even more why the set’s packaging is so critical to its presentation. Of course the packaging is only one more of the set’s most important elements. Its average price point rounds out its most important elements.

The average price point of Craft Recordings’ new centennial celebration of John Lee Hooker is important to note because it is a relatively affordable price. Comparing prices between Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Wal-Mart, the set’s average price point sits at approximately $49. Considering the amount of material, both musical and otherwise, included in the collection, such a price is relatively affordable to the average consumer. It would have been easy for those four major outlets to push their prices higher, but they each made certain to keep the set within the average consumer’s price range. That proves even more the importance of the set’s average price point to its overall presentation. When this element is considered alongside the set’s clearly impressive packaging and its equally noteworthy sequencing, the whole of those elements makes King of the Boogie a wonderful way to pay tribute to musical royalty.

Craft Recordings’ recently released five-disc John Lee Hooker box set is a thorough new collection that is certainly a wonderful tribute to the legacy of a great musical mind. That is proven in part through the extensive, 100-song sequence that reaches back to Hooker’s earliest days and beyond. The songs paint a rich picture of Hooker’s career. The set’s packaging is just as important to its whole thanks to its liner notes and pictures. The picture that they paint makes the picture painted by the set’s featured songs all the richer and more vivid. The set’s average price point makes it easily affordable for the average consumer, too. Each element is important in its own right to the set’s presentation. All things considered, they make this set a royally wonderful tribute to one of the music industry’s great names. It is available now in stores and online. The soundtrack was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2016, making it one of the best-selling jazz albums in music history, second only to Miles Davis’ seminal 1959 album Kind of Blue.  The record features some of the entertainment industry’s most well-known themes including the famed ‘Linus and Lucy’ and ‘Christmas Time Is Here,’ which opens the animated classic.

The soundtrack’s sales numbers are collectively not its only key note.  It was inducted into the Grammy ® Hall of Fame in 2007and the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2012.

The track listing for the single-LP vinyl re-issue is noted below.

Craft Recordings To Release New Thelonius Monk Collection Next Month

Courtesy: Craft Recordings

Thelonius Monk fans are getting a special treat this holiday season courtesy of Craft Records, the Catalog Division of Concord Music Group.

Craft Recordings will release The Complete Prestige 10-Inch LP Collection Dec. 15.  The limited edition all five of Monk’s 10” LPs recorded for Prestige, spanning 1952 – 1954.  Each record has been reproduced just as it was presented in its original release right down to the jacket art.  The audio was re-mastered from the original analog tapes by Joe Tarantino, while laquer cutting was handled by George Horn and Anne-Marie Seunram at Fantasy Studios.

As an added bonus for listeners, the new re-issue set also includes new liner notes by author Robin D.G. Kelley, who crafted the Monk bio Thelonius Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original. Kelley notes in the new liner notes that the 1950s was Monks “golden years in terms of [Monk’s] creative output.”

He also notes in the new discussion some of the difficulties that Monk faced in that same period including an issue with law enforcement that posed its own problems for Monk.  This is just some of what is included in the new in-depth liner notes.  More information is included in the full notes.

The Complete Prestige Sessions 10-Inch LP Collection will be available on high-res, standard audio and digital platforms.  Pre-orders for the collection are open now via Amazon.  The collection’s full track listing is noted below.

Craft Recordings Announces New John Lee Hooker Box Set Release Date, Specs

Courtesy: Craft Recordings/Concord Music Group

Craft Recordings, a division of Concord Music Group, will pay tribute to blues legend John Lee Hooker next month with a brand new box set.

King of the Boogie will be released Sept. 29 in stores and online.  The set’s 100-total songs are spread across five discs and features a number of Hooker’s greatest hits as well as lots of rarities, live recordings and previously unreleased recordings.  The collection includes a 56-page book along with the discs that features a variety of pictures of the famed bluesman at different points of his career as well as liner notes written by writer and Hooker historian Jas Obrecht and Hooker’s manager and friend Mike Kappus.

Mason Williams, who curated and produced King of the Boogie, said in a recent interview about the collection that its 100 total songs make up only a small glance of Hooker’s extensive career, but a clear view nonetheless.

“Even at 100 songs, this set is just a snapshot of John Lee Hooker’s incredible and influential career, but one that takes you on the long journey he took from his early days in Detroit to his time in Chicago recording for Vee-Jay Records and up through his later collaborations with Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt and Santana among others,” Williams said.

King of the Boogie is being released as part of a year-long celebration of what would have been Hooker’s 100th birthday (which would have been celebrated Aug. 22).  An exhibit of the same name is currently being presented at the Grammy Museum ® Mississippi.  It includes outfits that Hooker wore at various live shows, guitars that he played, photos, awards and his music.  The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 2018 before being moved to the Grammy Museum® L.A. Live.

Hooker’s daughter Zakiya, spoke Tuesday about the new exhibit and forthcoming box set, saying the tributes moved her and knew they would move audiences, too.

“Today, on what would have been my father’s 100th birthday, I am so thrilled to see him celebrated—both with the exhibit as well as with the announcement of this special collection of music,” she said.  “I know his fans will be excited to hear rare performances, and to read the touching words of his longtime manager, Mike Kappus, as well as those of the wonderful Jas Obrecht.  It was a pleasure to watch this box set come together, and I can’t wait to see it shared with the world.”
