The mainstream movie industry this year has not offered audiences much of anything memorable with its theatrical offerings. Finding Dory, Hail, Caesar, Barbershop: The Next Cut and so many others are clear proof of that. It seems for the most part, the “Big Six” has once again relied on nothing but prequels, sequels and remakes for its offerings. Yes, there have been some good movies out there such as Dr. Strange and the latest entry in the Star Wars franchise, Rogue One. Sadly though, the mainstream movie industry this year has honestly not offered audiences very much memorable fare. That is where the independent movie industry comes into play. The independent movie industry has turned out a rather impressive number of titles this year.
Titles such as Little Men, Marguerite, In–Lawfully Yours and others have proven to be standout offerings this year. Some of the movies included in this year’s list of top new independent movies made their debut overseas last year, but were officially released domestically this year, so exceptions have been made. IFC Films’ biopic Born To Be Blue is one of those movies released last year but debuting domestically this year. Marguerite, which is a French offering, debuted in its homeland last year but made its domestic debut this year. The Von Trapp Family: A Life of Music is another example of one of those foreign/domestic exceptions. It is German in root, but was released domestically early this spring and tops this critic’s list of the year’s top new independent movies.
As a reminder, this year’s list once again features this critic’s top 10 choices plus five honorable mention titles for a total of 15 titles. That being said, here for you is Phil’s Picks 2016 Top 10 New Independent Movies.
