Dry Kill Logic Debuts New Single, ‘Don’t See Ghosts’

Courtesy: Psychodrama Records

Dry Kill Logic debuted its new single this week.

The band debuted its new single ‘Don’t See Ghosts‘ Thursday through Revolver Magazine.  The song is the band’s first new music since the release of its single ‘Vices‘ last year.

The video is a very simple presentation.  A man sits in a chair, wearing a suit and tie, but his head is covered by a bear head.  The camera zooms in slowly over the course of the song’s nearly five-minute run time.  As the camera zooms in, images of protests and civil unrest flash very quickly over the serenity of the main scene.  The contrast of the imagery is meant to illustrate the song’s lyrical content, which front man Cliff Rigano discussed with the Revolver magazine staff.

“We’ve always tried to write songs that come from a personal place, but frame them in a way that can be interpreted to mean something different and unique to each listener,” said Rigano. “Don’t See Ghosts” was recorded last year, right after we put out “Vices”, but we were unsure of when to release it. After looking at the lyrics recently, the song actually started to mean something different to us as well, and we realized that this was the right time to put it out.”

The song’s featured musical arrangement is everything that fans have come to expect from the band, what with its heavy melodic metal approach.  At the same time, there are moments in this song that lend themselves to comparisons to works from Hatebreed, too.  That combination of sounds and styles makes the song’s arrangement in whole its own powerful reason for audiences to hear this song.

‘Don’t See Ghosts’ was produced by Dry Kill Logic guitarist Jason Bozzi and mixed by Greg Thomas (Misery Signals, Shai Hulud).  The song was recorded at Intension Studios in Astoria, NY and at Silver Bullet Studios in Burlington, CT.

More singles are expected from Dry Kill Logic through its own label, Psychodrama Records in partnership with eOne Music.  ‘Don’t See Ghosts’ is available to stream and download here.

TesseracT Inks New Deal With eOne Music & Kscope, Begins Work On Next Album

Courtesy: Century Media Records

British prog-metal band TesseracT apparently has a new home and has already started work on its next album.

Only months removed from the release of its first-ever live recording Odyssey/Scala, the band has announced that it will release its next album via eOne Music in North America. The upcoming release is in partnership with Kscope, TesseracT’s home label in the UK. When asked about joining eOne’s roster, front man Dan Tompkins noted the experience of eOne’s staff in making the choice to work with the label on its next album. “We’re very excited to be working with the eOne team, he said. “Their experience and well- rounded ability will certainly help us grow in our biggest market.” He added that part of the band’s decision was based on the label’s resources. “The band is really looking forward to making the most of utilizing the resources that eOne has to offer and can’t wait to start this album cycle,” he said.

Kscope Director of Sales & Marketing Johnny Wilks discussed the label’s dedication to TesseracT and giving it the utmost attention and help succeeding. “eOne are totally focused on this new record,” he said. “Working closely with our Kscope team in London, they have created a truly exciting campaign.” The as-yet untitled album will be the band’s third full-length studio release, fifth overall release, and its first for Kscope. The band’s previous two albums—Altered State and One—and EPs—Concealing Fate and Perspective—were all released via Century Media.

Overkill Doesn’t Need New Tricks, Sounds To Impress On Its Latest LP

Courtesy: eOne Music

Courtesy: eOne Music

Veteran thrash metal band Overkill has been making its own brand of rock for nearly forty years. Ever since the band released its debut album way back in 1984, the New Jersey-based band has built its fan base by sticking to what it knows best. Typically, producing the same kind of record with every release is a formula for a band’s demise. But somehow, Overkill has managed to disprove that formula with every release. That includes its latest full length studio effort White Devil Armory. This album, the band’s seventeenth (yes, seventeenth) presents a band with just as much drive and fire within its members as when it first started out all those years ago. Every one of the songs included in the recently released deluxe edition of White Devil Armory exemplifies just how much this band seems to still have in its tank. Collectively, they show that this band still has plenty of fuel left in its tank. It is definitely a candidate for a spot on this critic’s list of the year’s best new hard rock and metal albums.

A close examination of White Devil Armory reveals that this band still has plenty left to offer the metal community in whole. The thrash sound that audiences have come to know on the band’s previous releases is just as prevalent here as in those records. One of the best examples of why that sound makes this record works comes in the form of ‘Pig.’ This full throttle rocker will make any true metalhead proud. The full-on assault of guitarists Dave Linsk and Derek Tailer is the heart of this song. It displays what once made metal great. It is just solid shredding. Period. There is no down-tuned, crunchy sound here (or anywhere throughout the album). It’s like taking a musical trip back to a better era of music. And vocalist/found member Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth’s vocals are just as strong as he sings, “Listen to the horn blow/Up against the night glow/Someone left the bodies in the garden of the war show/Dig a grave or foxhole/Pile up the dead souls/Someone saw the bodies/Call damage control/Better get to know my name.” That first section of the song’s opening verse comes across as a not so lightly veiled commentary about the war in the Middle East. That could very well be wrong of course. It is, as always, just this critic’s own interpretation. The second half of the verse strengthens that argument, though. Ellsworth sings in the verse’s second half, “The big celebration is getting me high/Feel the sensation of just getting by/Don’t know the answer/But I know the game/Treat them well/Give them hell/Buy and sell/Welcome to the rodeo-Pig.” It almost comes across as making commentary about politicians orchestrating everything as he sings, “Treat them well/Give them hell/Buy and sell.” That line alone makes one think about the backhanded politics and politicians that lead the wars into which American forces are thrown. The ferocity of the song in its own way adds even more fuel to that fire. Again this is just one critic’s own interpretation of this song. It would definitely be interesting to learn whether or not that was what the band was trying to get across to audiences. Regardless, it is without a doubt one of the best moments on this album because of that ability to create such discussion regarding its lyrical content and its balls-to-the-walls sound.

‘Pig’ is one of Overkill’s moments on White Devil Armory. That is thanks to its combination of thought provoking lyrics and no nonsense music. The band presents even more of that no nonsense, full throttle sound in what is another of the album’s high points in ‘Where There’s Smoke.’ This song is another that harkens back to the golden era of speed and thrash metal. It conjures thoughts of classic Anthrax and Metallica with its musical side. On its lyrical side, the song Ellsworth and company create just as much discussion as Ellsworth sings, “Did a lot of damage in a little bit of time/I was running out of smiles/With two feet inside the crime/Finger pointing at me in the name of good and right/When I’m standing in the darkness/Turn on the f&%#!&% light.” He goes on to sing in the song’s second verse, “I was solid locked and loaded/Ready for the brawl/Standing in the killing field/Just outside the wall/Caught the scent of devil/Burning in the night/So I’m waiting in the shadows/Turn out that f&%#!&% light.” There is almost a sense of introspection about Ellsworth’s past here. The lines “Left the trouble back there in Jersey/Left the rubber just below the chrome” makes the song feel as if Ellsworth is saying his past is his past and he’s only looking straight forward. It’s almost like he’s saying, “Yes, these are things I did. But that’s the past.” This could again be a completely incorrect interpretation. It is just this critic’s own interpretation. Right or wrong, it proves in the long run to be one more excellent example of what makes White Devil Armory just as solid as any of Overkill’s previous records.

‘Pig’ and ‘Where There’s Smoke’ are both key examples of why White Devil Armory deserves to at least be considered for a spot on this and every critic’s year-end list of the year’s best new hard rock and metal albums. One more song that easily qualifies this album for said list is the album’s lead single and semi-title track ‘Armorist.’ It’s no wonder that this song was chosen as the album’s opener and its lead single, too.   Ron Lipnicki’s machine gun-fast drumming and the solid shredding on the part of Dave Linsk and Derek Tailer make this song an instant hit. On a random note, any Doctor Who fans out there will laugh at the fact taht Bobby Ellsworth sounds a lot like one of the Daleks here. The band produced this album itself and was joined by Greg Reely for mixing and mastering. Regardless of who was responsible for this aspect, that effect is a nice touch in this song. Audiences can check out the song’s official video online now via YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_c3GBrWsao. It is a solid opener for the band on this its latest album. And for those that might be new to the music of Overkill, it is just as solid a first impression from what is one of the most legendary bands in the metal community.

‘The Armorist,’ ‘Where There’s Smoke,’ and ‘Pig’ are each great additions to White Devil Armory. Each song proves in its own way why Overkill is still one of the most revered bands in the metal community. They are only a small collective handful of examples of why Overkill is still so popular. The deluxe edition of White Devil Armory includes a total of thirteen tracks. That leaves ten more songs from which audiences can choose as their favorite(s). Regardless of which track(s) audiences choose as their favorite(s), the one thing on which every listener will be able to agree in listening to this album is that it definitely deserves to be included on any critic’s year-end list of the best new hard rock and metal albums. The band is currently wrapping up the North American leg of its tour in support of its new album. It will wrap up the U.S. leg of its tour with a pair of dates at the Palladium in Worcester, MA next Thursday and Friday, October 16th and 17th before taking some time off to recharge in preparation for the European leg of its tour. That leg begins Thursday, October 30th in Barcelona, Spain. Audiences can get a full listing of the band’s tour dates as well as the latest updates from the band online at:

Unblackened Is One Of BLS’ Best Live Releases

Courtesy: EOne Music/Entertainment One

Courtesy: EOne Music/Entertainment One

Zakk Wylde and his Black Label Society brothers are back once again with a brand new live release.  Unblackened is another impressive live release from Wylde and company.  Whether one has had the pleasure of attending a BLS show live or not, it serves as an excellent example of what audiences get with a live Black Label show.  This live recording is something extra special for Black Label fans.  It is something extra special first and foremost because unlike with previous live releases, it is being released both on CD and on DVD and Blu-ray.  Audiences will appreciate the audio quality from the CD portion of the recording.  On a related note, the review for the video (Blu-ray) portion of the recording will come at a later date.  The audio mix on the CD was very well balanced, adding to the overall enjoyment.  One more reason fans will appreciate this latest release is that also unlike previous live releases, Zakk and his band mates were extremely selective in their set list for this show.  All of these factors taken into consideration, they make Unblackened a contender for one of 2013’s best new live recordings.

Unblackened, as noted, is an easy contender to be named one of the year’s best live recordings.  It earns this honor first and foremost as it is presented both with an audio and video portion.  This is different from previous live Black Label Society releases.  Previous live Black Label Society have been put out solely on CD (E.g. Live Brew-tality) or specifically on DVD or Blu-ray as in the live release, Boozed, Bruised, and Broken Boned.  This is a rare treat for long-time Black Label Society fans, to be able to take the recording with them anywhere that they want, including their vehicles.  Even with the audio and video portion being kept separate from one another, fans receive a treat as it allows audiences to decide which side of the show they want to get.  This is good in that maybe a given fan has the DVD or Blu-ray side of the show, but not the CD.  The CD could be purchased separate by said fan’s family or friends as a gift for a birthday.  Or since the holidays are right around the corner, said fan’s family or friends could purchase the CD as a gift idea without worrying about whether or not said fan already has the audio half of the concert.  Sure, it would be just as great to have both the audio and video portion of the show together.  But it’s just as good to have them separate.  The hypothetical situation noted here is just one example of why this is the case.  And it is for this hypothetical situation that Entertainment One’s staffers are to be commended for making the choice to present the show on separate formats.

The ability of fans to choose whether they want to take in Unblackened in its audio or video format or both is a major boon to any Black Label Society fan.  It’s just one positive to this new upcoming live recording.  In looking solely at the recording’s audio (CD) side, the CD’s audio mix is solid.  Believe it or not, there are some cases in which the audio mix of a live recording can turn out to be somewhat muddy to put it politely.  This is not one of those cases.  Those responsible for mixing the concert for home release did their jobs with expert precision.  The end result is a live double-disc CD release that will leave fans wanting the concert’s video side in the best possible way.  But alas, that is a review for another day.

The overall presentation of Unblackened is the biggest portion of what makes this live recording a candidate to be one of the year’s best live recordings.  The audio mix was finalized expertly on the CD.  And the very fact that fans can choose between the CD and DVD or Blu-ray (what BLS fan wouldn’t want both sides of the show?) makes it even more impactful for fans.  There is one more factor which fans should consider in this new live release.  That final factor is the show’s set list.  The set list makes the concert stand out from previous BLS live releases in the fact that it is much more album specific.  It pulls a song here and a song there from The Blessed Hellride and Mafia.  But the majority of this concert’s set list was pulled from Wylde’s older solo material and from BLS’ acoustic album, Hangover Music Vol. VI.  That album in question received mixed reception from both fans and critics alike.  Put into a live format as it is here though, many of the songs from that album are given a whole new life.  Perhaps after hearing the songs from Hangover Music Vol. VI in a whole new setting, fans that were critical of said album will gain a whole new appreciation for the record.  Older tracks such as the show’s opener, ‘Losin’ Your Mind’, ‘Sold My Soul’, ‘Road Back Home’, and ‘Sweet Jesus’ make the concert even more special.  That’s because these classics are far less visible on Zakk’s previous live recordings.  They show a side of Wylde with which many audiences might not be so familiar.  It proves, as Zakk said in one interview years ago, a song can be heavy without being heavy and crunching.  Fans that accept this will enjoy every minute of this recording when it is released on September 24th via EOne Music.  Fans will be able to purchase the double-disc in stores or order it online via iTunes at http://www.itunes.com/blacklabelsociety.  In the meantime, audiences can keep up with all of the latest BLS news on the official BLS Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/blacklabelsociety and its official website, http://www.blacklabelsociety.com.
