ESPN To Air 2019 Women’s College Basketball Tournament Selection Show Monday

Women’s college basketball fans will find out next week, if their favorite teams will be part of the NCAA Women’s College Basketball tournament.

ESPN will air the NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Special presented by Capital One at 7 p.m. on Monday.  The two-hour special starts on ESPN, and will move to ESPNU as each team and its seeding is announced.

Monday’s broadcast is part of the Tournament Challenge Marathon, which will feature 25 consecutive hours of college basketball coverage and analysis as fans prep their brackets.

Prior to Monday night’s special, fans will get an early look at he selection committee’s discussions on the 5 p.m. edition of SportsCenter on Sunday.  Following Monday night’s broadcast, the SEC Network will have its own special broadcast in the form of SEC Now: Women’s Basketball Selection Special at 9 p.m.

espnW will also air its own share of programming prior to and after Selection Sunday.  Programming highlights are noted below.

• Charlie Creme will assess the bracket, its biggest surprises and snubs.
• Mechelle Voepel will examine the wide-open feel of the NCAA tournament and each top seed’s path to the Final Four.
• Around the Rim: LaChina Robinson and Charlie Creme will interview selection chair Rhonda Lundin Bennett on Monday
• espnW also will feature expert picks breaking down every region of the bracket and predictions for the Final Four, and look at the winners and losers in the NCAA tournament bracket.
• Women’s Tournament Challenge: espnW and the WNBA have created a group for fans. Users can join, create their bracket and then compare it to brackets of players such as Breanna Stewart, A’ja Wilson and more.

Coverage of the Women’s NCAA College Basketball Championship starts March 22 on ESPN, ESPN2 and the ESPN app.  Coverage of the Women’s NCAA College Basketball Final Four runs from April 5-7.  The complete schedule for the tournament will be announced soon.

ESPN Networks To Carry UT’s Celebration Of Pat Summit’s Life Live

Officials with ESPN announced a special programming update today for two of its networks.  The programming is in relation to the upcoming memorial service to pay tribute to legendary basketball coach Pat Summit.

This Thursday the University of Tennessee will hold a memorial service to pay tribute to legendary basketball coach Pat Summit.  The service will be held July 14^th at 7pm.  It will be carried live on ESPN2 and the SEC Network.  Coverage of the service will be hosted by ESPN’s Maria Taylor.  Live from Thompson-Boling Arena at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.  Ryan McGee, co-host of ESPN Radio’s Marty and McGee, will host ESPN Radio’s coverage of the service live from 7pm to 9pm.

Summit passed away two weeks ago after an ongoing battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.  She was originally diagnosed with the disease in 2011.  During her thirty-eight years at The University of Tennessee Summit won 1,098 games and brought the university eight national championships making her the most successful coach in major college basketball history.

ESPN Networks To Carry Extensive Coverage Of NCAA Div. I Women’s Basketball Tournament

March 13th, 2016 is one of the biggest nights in the 2015 – 2016 college basketball season.  That is because it is selection Sunday.  It is just one of the college basketball world’s big days.  On Monday, March 14th, ESPN will have exclusive coverage of “Selection Monday.”

The full 64-team field for the Women’s NCAA Division I college basketball tournament will be revealed on the NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Special Presented by Capitol One will air March 14^th at 7pm ET on ESPN.  Kevin Neghandi will anchor the broadcast.  He will be joined by veteran analysts Kara Lawson and Rebecca Lobo for additional commentary.  Coverage doesn’t end after the last team is announced, either.  ESPNU will pick up coverage at 8pm ET with the NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Special Extended Coverage Presented by Capitol One.  Both shows will include special features and interviews and an exclusive interview with Chris Dawson during ESPN’s coverage during the 7pm hour.  Dawson is Chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee.

As an added bonus, ESPN will once again carry all 63 games in the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Capitol One.  It all leads up to the NCAA Division I Women’s Final Four from Indianapolis, IN on April 3^rd and 5^th.  2016 marks the eleventh consecutive year that ESPN has carried complete coverage of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.  ESPN and ESPN2 will carry coverage of regionalized telecasts with home protection through the tournament’s first two rounds.  ESPN3 and ESPN Full Court, ESPN’s pay-per-view service, will offer complete first and second round coverage as a supplement to the coverage offered by ESPN and ESPN2.  The tournament’s final 15 games, beginning with the Regional Semifinals, will have national telecast windows on ESPN and ESPN2.

ESPN Announces Women’s College Basketball Broadcast Schedule For 2014 – 2015 Season

ESPN announced its broadcast schedule for the upcoming 2014 – 2015 Women’s College Basketball season over the weekend.

ESPN and its family of networks will cover a total of 131 games in the upcoming 2014 – 2015 Women’s College Basketball season. Coverage on the women’s side includes coverage on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, the SEC Network and Longhorn Network. Audiences will also be able to catch a number of those games online via ESPN3 and via Satellite on ESPN Full Court. Fans can also catch games online via WatchESPN and WatchESPN.com via the WatchESPN app. The breakdown of the upcoming season’s coverage is as follows:

ESPN will carry coverage of the annual Jimmy V. Women’s Classic presented by Corona on Saturday, December 6^th. The lady Huskies will take on Number 5 Notre Dame in that game in a rematch of last season’s Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.

ESPN2 will carry thirty-six of those 131 games. ESPN will carry every Big Monday matchup as well as most Sunday games throughout the season. It all starts with an opening day doubleheader November 17^th featuring four ranked teams. Those teams are: two-time defending champion Connecticut,  Number 20 Stanford, Number 13 Baylor, and Number 6 Kentucky.

ESPNU will carry nineteen of the season’s games, most of which will be Sunday double headers during the conference season. It will also carry the annual Play 4 Kay tournament alongside ESPN2. The tournament brings attention to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. It is held in partnership with The V Foundation and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). That tournament is scheduled to begin February 22^nd, 2015.

The SEC Network will dedicate its time to carrying more than sixty games. That schedule includes a double head every Thursday and a game of the week every Monday.

The Longhorn Network will have thirteen games. Of those thirteen games, seven will feature the Longhorns taking on a Big 12 opponent.

ESPN Family of Networks Will Carry Entire NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament

ESPN and the ESPN family of networks will carry the entire NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Presented by Capital One.

The NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship Presented by Capital One tips off this Saturday, March 22^nd.  It all starts with a matchup between No. 15 Winthrop and No. 2 Duke in Durham, North Carolina.  Coverage of the game is scheduled for an 11am ET start time.  The game will be broadcast on television on ESPN2 and online on ESPN3 via WatchESPN.

The majority of the tournament’s first and second-round games will be televised on ESPN2.  There are two exceptions to that rule.  The exceptions in question are the Sunday 3pm ET and 5:30pm ET window.  The games broadcast on ESPN2 will be broadcast in twelve regionalized windows with home market protection.  ESPN3 and ESPN Full Court, ESPN’s pay-per-view package, will offer full coverage of the tournament as an addition to the tournament’s regional coverage.  The tournament’s final fifteen games will be carried on ESPN and ESPN2.  It all leads up to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship game on Tuesday, April 8^th at 8:30pm ET on ESPN.  The championship game will be broadcast live from Nashville, Tennessee.

NCAA Div. I Women’s Basketball Championship Brackets To Be Revealed On ESPN

Women’s college basketball fans will find out which teams will make this year’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Division I tournament next week.

ESPN will reveal the complete field for this year’s tournament next Monday, March 17^th on the NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Special Presented by Capital One.  The special presentation will air live on ESPN and online via WatchESPN.  Kevin Negandhi will anchor the broadcast.  He will be joined by veteran analysts Kara Lawson and Rebecca Lobo in studio for in-depth analysis of the team selections.  The trio will interview Baylor’s Kim Mulkey and Notre Dame’s Muffet McGraw as part of the evening’s broadcast.

Also joining the discussion will be espnW.com writer Mechelle Voepel.  She will offer extra insight on ESPNU’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Selection Special Extended Coverage Presented by Capital One.  That special will air on ESPNU at 8pm ET.  ESPNU’s extended coverage special will feature an exclusive interview with Carolayne Henry, chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee among a number of interviews included in the broadcast.

ESPN, espnW Branching Out Nine For IX Series

Fans of ESPN’s hugely popular and successful Nine for IX series have even more reason to be excited today.  ESPN President John Skipper announced today that espnW and ESPN Films will continue the collaboration that they started with this Summer’s Nine for IX series into the future.  The two organizations will continue their partnership with an annual digital short film series.  Skipper shared his thoughts on what led to the decision in a prepared statement.  “The Nine for IX brand has become a beacon for stories that matter to the modern sports fan,” said Skipper. “We are proud to continue this critically acclaimed series, providing fans a fresh, unique, and relevant point of view on the evolving landscape of women in sports.”

The first five films in the annual digital short film series will air during Summer 2014.  They and all shorts to follow will be made available on a variety of digital ESPN platforms.  They will also eventually be aired on the ESPN family of networks and on mobile devices and applications.  They will also be available online at espnW and ESPN.com.  It will continue to be executive produced by Robin Roberts of ABC’s Good Morning America and Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of Tribeca Productions.

Nine For IX’s Penultimate Production Airs Tuesday

The Nine for IX series winds down next Tuesday, August 20^th with the penultimate film in the Summer-long film series from ESPN Films and espnW.  The 99ers premieres Tuesday night at 8pm ET on ESPN.  It focuses on the 1999 U.S. women’s national soccer team.  On July 10, 1999, the U.S. women’s national soccer team turned the women’s sports world on its ear when the Women’s national soccer team defeated China’s women’s national soccer team at the famed Rose Bowl to take the Women’s World Cup.  The victory came in front of more than 90,000 fans in attendance and an estimated 40 million fans watching on television.

The story of the iconic victory is told by longtime U.S. Women’s national soccer team captain Julie Foudy.   It’s through Foudy’s own words that audiences gain an understanding of the mentality that led the U.S. women’s national soccer team to victory over China.  It uses not just interviews with Foudy, but behind-the-scenes footage shot by members of the team that have never before been seen.  It reunites key players from the 1999 U.S. women’s national team for the story, directed by Erin Leyden and produced by Foudy. 

The 99ers is the second to last film in the Nine for IX series this Summer.  The series’ final film, Branded airs August 27^th at 8pm ET on ESPN.  Each film will be available for download via iTunes the day after its broadcast.  A collectible gift set containing each film will be available on October 15^th, 2013.

ESPN Films, espnW Wind Down Nine For IX Series Starting With “Runner”

Nine for IX, the summer-long film series from ESPN Films and espnW, continues with another new film next Tuesday.  Runner is the seventh film in the nine-film series.  The story of Runner centers on distance runner Mary Decker.  More specifically, it focuses on Decker’s Olympic debut in the 3,000 meter race at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.  The film follows Decker’s highs and lows as she rose to fame over the course of her career while still having to overcome the tribulations of missing the Olympics three times before her 1984 debut.  As the film presents, her debut was set to literally be Decker’s “Golden” moment.  But a fateful on-track accident with another runner would ultimately seal Decker’s fate.

Audiences hear from Decker herself as she explains how she had to overcome her initial feelings of anger towards rival racer Zola Budd.  It was Budd with whom she collided on track, causing both women to wipe out.  Budd would go on to finish seventh in the race.  Decker shows in the film, that despite those memories still burning in her mind, she has largely gotten past her original feelings of ill will toward Budd.

Award-winning film maker Shola Lynch directs this bittersweet story of hope and determination.  It will air next Tuesday, August 13^th at 8pm on ESPN.  Lynch herself is a former track star.  She had been labeled “the next Mary Decker” at one point.  The Columbia University graduate is currently working on a companion book for her new film on Decker.  Her previous documentaries include Free Angela and Political Prisoners.

Nine for IX Continues Tonight At 8pm

The Nine for IX film series from espnW and ESPN Films continues tonight.  The series, which focuses on some of the most important woman in sports, turns its view tonight to the world of figure skating in The Diplomat. 

The Diplomat centers on East German figure skater Katarina Witt.  Witt is one of the most decorated women in the world of figure skating.  Over the course of her career, she earned six European skating titles, four world championships and back-to-back Olympic gold medals in figure skating.  For all of her accolades, Witt couldn’t escape her critics.  Some called her “the most beautiful face of socialism.”  Even in her own home of East Germany, Witt was under surveillance by the Stasi, East Germany’s own infamous secret police force.  As this film shows, Witt faced great challenges in her home nation both before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall.  For all of her challenges, the changes in East Germany also benefitted her.  Audiences will see both sides of that coin tonight when The Diplomat airs at 8pm on ESPN.
