As I Lay Dying Debuts ‘Roots Below’ Video; Announces ‘Shaped By Fire’ Re-Issue Coming; Reveals New Live Dates

Courtesy: Nuclear Blast Records

As I Lay Dying is scheduled to re-issue its latest album later this year.

In anticipation of the record’s re-issue — a precise release date is under consideration — the band premiered one of the songs that will feature in the record Friday. It came in the form of the song, ‘Roots Below.’ The band also premiered a visualizer for the single Friday.

The song’s musical arrangement is a heavy, intense mix of metalcore and thrash. It takes listeners back to the band’s infancy with its breakneck speed guitar work and machine gun fast drumming. Front man Tim Lambesis’ growls and clean vocals pair with the intense instrumentation to make the song fully immersive.

Guitarist Phil Sgrosso talked about the creation of the song’s musical arrangement in a prepared statement.

“‘Roots Below’ was a track I initially wrote for the Shaped By Fire album, but at the time we collectively felt it needed more time and attention to develop to its fullest potential,” said Sgrosso. “We were finally able to piece it all together along with some other material taken from the Shaped By Fire touring cycle, bundling it all into a deluxe version of the album.”

Added Sgrosso, “Apart from the studio versions of ‘Roots Below’ and ‘Destruction or Strength,’ there will be an assortment of live songs captured on tour from 2019 in Europe, several ballad/electronic re-interpretations, a studio version of an instrumental track we wrote exclusively for the live show, an instrumental version of the entire album, as well as some other transitional pieces from our set that we wanted to share as part of this release. This has been a very productive first step towards getting back into the creative zone and beginning to focus on new material for next year.”

No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the press release announcing the song’s debut. The lyrics provided with the visualizer hint at a theme of overcoming personal adversity and the causes, both internal and extraneous.

While the release date for the deluxe re-issue of Shaped By Fire is under consideration, the re-issue’s track listing is known. It is noted below.

Below is the Shaped By Fire Deluxe Edition tracklist:

Ice Nine Kills Debuts Video for ‘Stabbing In The Dark’ Acoustic Take

Ice Nine Kills debuted the video for its acoustic take of ‘Stabbing in the Dark‘ this week.

The band debuted the video Friday for the song, which is featured on the upcoming re-issue of the band’s 2018 album The Silver Scream.  The video features a family watching the original video for ‘Stabbing in the Dark‘ on a black and white television in a very 1950s living room setting.

The acoustic take of ‘Stabbing in the Dark’ features guest vocals from Trivium front man Matt Heafy.  Heafy talked about joining Ice Nine Kills for the recording during a recent interview, saying how happy he was to take part in the song’s re-imagining.

“Ice Nine Kills is one of the absolute best bands on the planet right now,” he said.  “With their blend of styles and sounds and unique imagery, they’ve crafted a world entirely their own.  Being such a big fan myself, I did an acoustic cover of ‘Stabbing in the Dark’ on my Twitch live one day.  Next thing I knew, INK checked it out and dug it — which I was honored to hear.  I can’t wait till the world hears this newly re-imagined version of this incredible song.  Watch as INK takes the world over.  Mark my words.”

INK front man Spencer Charnas responded to Heafy’s comments with his own positive remarks in a separate interview.

“We were devilishly delighted to find out that Matt was a fan of INK,” he said.  “When we heard his chill-inducing cover of ‘Stabbing in the Dark’, we knew right then and there that we had to collaborate with him.”

He added, “We have enormous respect for Matt’s abilities, and are honored to have him be a part of this spooky, almost folk-like rendition of the song.  He slaughtered this performance, and we can’t wait wait for people to hear it during our favorite month of the year.”

INK’s acoustic take of ‘Stabbing in the Dark’ with Matt Heafy is just one of the acoustic works featured in the band’s upcoming re-issue of The Silver Scream.  The re-issue will also feature an acoustic performance of the song ‘A Grave Mistake,’ which the band recorded live on Sirius XM and a new take of ‘Thank God It’s Friday,’ which features the original Jason actor Ari Lehman.

The re-issue’s track listing is noted below.

THE SILVER SCREAM: FINAL CUT album will include the following track listing:

6. A Grave Mistake
7. Rocking The Boat (ft. Jeremy Schwartz)
8. Enjoy Your Slay (ft. Sam Kubrick)

Whitechapel Reveals New LP Specs; Unveils Video For Album’s Lead Single

Whitechapel has a new album on the way.

The Tennessee-based death metal band announced this week that it will release its sixth full-length studio recording this summer.  Mark of the Blade will be released in stores and online on Friday, June 24th.  The album will be released worldwide via Metal Blade Records.  In anticipation of its release, the band has unveiled the lyric video for the album’s lead single, which is also its title track.  The video is currently streaming online via the band’s page at Metal Blade Records’ website.

Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Cannibal Corpse) manned the boards for the 11-song record.  It is not the first time that he has worked with the band.  He also helmed the band’s self-titled 2012 album and its follow-up, 2014’s This Endless War.  Guitarist Alex Wade discussed the changes that listeners can expect from the band this time out with the press, noting the dynamic contrast of the songs and the role of the band members’ personal growth in the album’s sound.  “It’s the most dynamic record we’ve done, in the sense that one song can be very aggressive while the next one will be softer and sentimental,”  he said.  “At this point in our career and as we grow older, we are taking a more open-minded approach to creating our music, allowing what we think sounds good to evolve naturally, rather than to just write what is expected of us.”   The album’s complete track list is noted below.

Mark of the Blade track-listing
1. The Void
2. Mark of the Blade
3. Elitist Ones
4. Bring Me Home
5. Tremors
6. A Killing Industry
7. Tormented
8. Brotherhood
9. Dwell in the Shadows
10. Venomous
11. Decennium

Whitechapel is heading back out on the road this spring.

The veteran TN-based metal outfit has announced that it will embark on one more group of live dates in support of its most recent full-length studio recording Our Endless War (2014).  The upcoming tour schedule launches Wednesday, May 4th and runs through Sunday, May 22nd.  Fit For A King will join the band as support on the tour along with Enterprise Earth and The Plot In You.  The tour launches in Fayetteville, Arkansas and wraps up in Wilmington, NC.  More dates will be announced as the band is also planning on touring this summer in support of its as-yet untitled sixth album.  The band is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on that record.  Mark Lewis returned to helm this record after manning the boards for Our Endless War.    The band’s current list of dates is noted below.
