Flobots Unveil New LP’s Lead Single

Flobots is giving fans a taste of its next album.

The band released the song ‘Pray’ (Extended) this week.  The song is the first single from the band’s upcoming album NOENEMIES.  The song is available at all digital retailers now.  It can be streamed online now here.  The song’s lyrics are available here.

‘Pray’ was written and recorded early in 2016 ahead of the presidential race between now President Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  The band said the song is a call to action, addressing the problems of racism and division among America’s population.

The song is described as coming from the vantage point of a community realizing the result of its part in the racism that has become so present across the country. The community, in its realization, asks for collective forgiveness for its actions.

NOENEMIES’ lead sing samples an Alan Lomax performance of the Sacred Harp song ‘Antioch’ for its arrangement. A local Denver, CO Sacred Harp group was brought in to sing “re-imagined” lyrics to ‘Antioch’ for the introduction to the extended take on ‘Pray.’

Flobots member Johnny 5 said hearing ‘Antioch’ had a powerful impact on him, adding it led to a deep appreciation for Sacred Harp singing.

“When I first heard ‘Antioch’ it felt like an exorcism…,” Johnny 5 said. “Digging deeper, we realized that the entire culture of Sacred Harp singing fully embodies the spirit that has fueled the direction of our new music. Songs of power. Songs that celebrate community. Songs designed to be experienced,  not performed. Songs meant to be sung out with strength.”

Flobots will host a Facebook Live Q&A session on Jan. 30 to discuss in more depth the topics addressed in its new single. The session will begin at 10 p.m. ET.  Anyone wanting to take part can RSVP and present questions for the session here.

Flobots will also partner with Denver, CO-based dance company Wonderbound for a series of live performance collaborations dubbed “Divisions” to promote its new album.  The collaboration will see the group performing dance routines to Flobots’ new songs.

The performances begin April 14 and run through April 30.  They will be held at a series of venues around Denver.  Fans can check out the dates for the shows and purchase tickets here.

Flobots recently announced it has a new album on the way in the New Year and just this week, the veteran hip-hop act announced it will hit the road this fall in support of its upcoming album.

The “Your Life Matters Tour” will launch October 27th in Wichita, Kansas and currently runs through January 2nd in Aspen, Colorado. The tour is sin support of the group’s upcoming album NOENEMIES.

No release date has been announced for NOENEMIES. The album will be the group’s first full-length release since 2012’s Circle in the Square.  Flobots drummer Kenny Ortiz said the band didn’t initially expect to tour until after NOENEMIES was released but the group felt, with the nation’s current state, there was a need to get out to the public again.

“Music has the power to bring people together, ” Ortiz said. “Right now we need that more than ever. We didn’t anticipate hitting the road again nationally until NOENEMIES is released next year. But with all that ‘s happening in the country and in the world right now, there is just too much to say and too much to do to not get out there.”

Flobots’ New LP Another One Of 2012’s Surprise Hits

Courtesy: Shanachie Records

Flobots’ new record, “Circle in The Square” is a solid record that is easily one more of the year’s sleeper hits.  While this Denver, Colorado based band has never had major mainstream support, this new LP show why it’s no surprise that it has managed to grow and succeed time and again with every album.  Its mix of politically charged lyrics and beats will make it a favorite among its long time fans and build a new fan base at the same time.

The album opens strongly with its title track, declaring, “We are the circle in the square.”  The band isn’t speaking of itself.  Rather, it’s a call for unity and a call to action so to speak on the part of the band to get audiences involved.  The band’s front men Johnny 5 (A.K.A. Jamie Laurie) and Brer Rabbit write in the song, “The time is now/our time has come/We show ‘em how/what can be done/No matter what they say/Or they don’t say/We make a way/out of no way/Against the gun/Beneath the veil/Yes we can/Too big to fail/We are the ones/We’re waiting for/We save ourselves…”  As the song’s video illustrates, it doesn’t matter what one’s background, one needs to take into consideration of the world around and get involved.  Again, “The time is now…we show ‘em how/what can be done…We make a way out of no way.  The line of “Yes we can, too big to fail is by no means an endorsement of Barack Obama.  It’s simply a way to say we as a people united can make a difference.  We’re too big to fail.

The album’s opener is just one example of what makes this new album so impressive.  Lyrically speaking, “Circle in The Square” offers so many diverse topics.  The songs range in topic from politics to relationships to topics that some might not even expect.  That diversity alone makes this record a contender for the year’s biggest sleeper hits, if not one of the year’s best records, period.  Add in an equally interesting musical style, and audiences get even more of a treat.  This album has its share of rap-rock stylings that have made the band so well-liked among its fan base.  But it also manages to separate the two elements apart from one song to the next with ease.  That blend of sounds will keep audiences hooked from start to finish.  It all combines to make for a record that will grow on audiences more with every listen.  And that alone is the sign of a really good record.  In the case of “Circle in the Square” this is not just a good record, but a much underrated album, too.  Audiences can pick it up now in stores and online.

Flobots is currently touring in support of “Circle in the Square.”  The band will be performing in Charlotte, North Carolina Monday, October 15th at the Tremont Music Hall.  For a full listing of the band’s current tour dates, audiences can go online to http://flobots.com, http://www.facebook.com/theflobots, http://www.myspace.com/flobots, and http://twitter.com/flobots.
