Settle Your Scores Debuts New Single, ‘1999,’ Companion Video

Pop punk band Settle Your Scores debuted its latest single and video this week.

The band premiered its new single, ‘1999,’ and its companion video Tuesday. The song is the lead single from the band’s forthcoming, as-yet-untitled album. The song’s musical arrangement immediately lends itself to works from the likes of Sum 41, Good Charlotte, and All Time Low while its lyrical theme clearly delivers a fond reminiscing of days gone by.

The video features the band — Christian Fisher (vocals), Ricky Uhlenbrock (guitar, vocals), Patrick Bryant (guitar), Jeffrey Borer (bass, vocals), and Caleb Smith (drums, percussion) — performing its new single in an apartment setting. One scene feature the band in a rehearsal space in the setting that is lined with posters featuring pop culture icons from the 90s. Among those icons are Blink-182, Nickelodeon’s classic Nicktoons cartoon characters, and everyone’s favorite fearsome deadman, Beetlejuice.

The other scene features Fisher (sporting an All That t-shirt) and one of his band mates enjoying huge bowls of sugary cereal as the warm remembrance of better days plays over the visuals.

‘1999’ is Settle Your Scores’ first single with the independent record label Mutant League Records. The band recently signed a record deal with the label. Specifics of the deal were not announced.

Moldy Roses Signs To Wiretap Records; Releases Self-Titled EP

Courtesy: Wiretap Records

Wiretap Records’ artist roster expanded again this week.

The label announced Tuesday, it signed independent pop punk band Moldy Roses. The band’s signing makes it label mate to the likes of In Parallel, Taken Days, and Mercy Music.

Along with the signing, the band also released its new self-titled 7″ picture disc this week. The record is available here. The band debuted the video for two of the EP’s songs — ‘Bleach‘ and ‘Millenial Falcons‘ — last year. The musical arrangements featured in both songs are works that will appeal to fans of bands, such as Sum 41, New Found Glory, and Good Charlotte.

According to front man Quintin Manchester, ‘Bleach,’ ‘Millenial Falcons’ and the EPs are examples of Moldy Roses’ infancy.

“These are the first 3 songs ever recorded by Moldy Roses,” he said. “We had a total blast recording this EP in the early days of the pandemic and we feel insanely lucky to have had Kyle McAulay of Spanish Love Songs engineer and produce it for us. I first met Kyle in 2017 at a SLS show in Fullerton at Programme. Spanish Love Songs had just released ‘Giant Sings the Blues’ digitally through Wiretap. That is still one of my favorite records ever, So all these years later, partnering with Wiretap records was a total no brainer!!”

Counterpunch Debuts New Single, ‘We, The Role’

Courtesy: Thousand Islands Records

Surf punk band Counterpunch debuted its new single this week.

The band debuted its new single ‘We, The Role‘ Tuesday. The song is the b-side from the band’s recently released single ‘Handbook for the Recently Debriefed.’ Its debut comes less than a month after the band debuted the song and its companion lyric video.

The record is scheduled for release Jan. 29 through Thousand Islands Records in the United States and SBAM Records in the European Union. Pre-orders for Handbook for the Recently Debriefed are open. Quantities are limited to 100 in each of the record’s three variants.

While the band’s clear Pennywise influence is just as prevalent in ‘We, The Role,’ as in the single’s title song, the musical arrangement featured in ‘We, The Role’ will also appeal to fans of bands, such as Good Charlotte, Simple Plan. That is evidenced in the guitar arrangement and vocal delivery style.

The lyrical theme that accompanies the song’s musical arrangement comes across as a commentary of sorts. Not having an explanation from the band, it is somewhat difficult to determine the topic exactly. It would seem from what can be deciphered that the lyrical theme is a commentary on how society has become in recent years. That is just this critic’s interpretation and should not be taken as gospel.

Good Charlotte Debuts New Single, ‘Last December,’ Companion Video

Courtesy: MDDN

Pop punk band Good Charlotte returned this week with its latest single and a video to boot.

The band premiered its new single ‘Last December‘ Thursday along with the song’s companion video. The song features an arrangement that will appeal to the band’s established fan base while its lyrical content will reach farther in its appeal.

Singer/guitarist Benji Madden talked about the song’s lyrical them in a prepared statement.

“2020 being the 20th anniversary of our self titled debut album, really made us feel like we wanted to release something for those fans who’ve gone on this journey with us,” said Madden. “The holidays can be a rough time of year. Thinking of the ones we’ve lost and longing for moments that have passed us by, is definitely a part of the joy and melancholy. This song for us speaks to both sides of those holiday feelings and we hope it brings some solace to anyone who needs it.”

The video that accompanies the band’s new single takes viewers throughout an unidentified region of America that has been hit by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. From shuttered store fronts and businesses having gone out of business, to signs advertising COVID-19 testing, to an empty school, the imagery hits home what has happened as a result of the pandemic. It reflects, again, the theme in the song’s lyrics, looking back on the better times.
