Haken premiered its latest single and video this week.

The band premiered its new single, ‘Nightingale‘ and its companion lyric video Tuesday. The new single is the first new music from Haken since the release of its album, Virus in 2020. It also marks the band’s first new music with returned keyboardist Pete Jones.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Nightingale’ is a unique composition whose instrumentation at times lends itself to comparison to works from Dream Theater and at others from Leprous. At others still, there is also an audible comparison to works from TesseracT and Devin Townsend.

The lyrical theme featured in Haken’s new single delivers a positive, uplifting message, which the band addressed in a prepared message.

Lyrically, the song reflects on the creative process itself; with a message that although it may be difficult of late, we must remember to be thankful for the positives in life; be they big or small,” the statement reads.

The lyric video for ‘Nightingale’ features the song’s lyrics over the visual backdrop of a nightingale in a cage. The song plays over the visualization.

Front man Russell Allen echoed his band mate’s sentiments.

“The wait is over! We are really looking forward to getting back on the road and sharing the live music experience with all of you. See you on the road my friends!”

The members of Haken spoke highly of Symphony X in a prepared statement, additionally expressing their anticipation for getting out on the road together.

“We are so excited to get out on the road again at all, but having the honour to do it alongside Symphony X will make it that much more special,” the statement reads. “We have nothing but the utmost respect for them as progressive metal pioneers and when we were starting out, Symphony X was one of the bands who inspired us to practice our instruments and strive to be better musicians – and still do! Parts Per Million Addresses Faith, Death In New Single, Video

Courtesy: INgrooves/O’Donnell Media Group

Independent rock band Parts Per Million debuted its latest single this week.

The band premiered its new single, ‘Find The Light‘ Thursday, along with its companion video, which was premiered through Ghost Cult Magazine. The song features a steady, brooding musical arrangement that reaches its peak in the choruses. It is a stylistic approach and resultant sound that echoes influences of Haken, Leprous, and other similar acts.

The juxtaposition of the more brooding verses and the more powerful choruses is a familiar approach to songwriting, and does well here as it pairs with the song’s lyrical theme.

Front man Paul McSweeney talked about the song’s heavily philosophical and theological theme during a recent interview.

“This song was always special to me,” he said. “I held the guitar and vocal part for years, with only the ideas that the song grew in to. When we brought it to Kevin at Halo, we had no words for it, and weren’t really sure if it would get done. We talked amongst ourselves about incorporating death, the upside down from Stranger Things, and the other side, or afterlife. The final thought became about one singular moment. The last consciousness, slipping into the final unconsciousness.”

He added, “How powerful is the love you share with the people that mean the most to you?
Does it conquer all things of this life? Does it transcend time? If you don’t believe in something beyond this life, do you believe that there is somewhere special for that person when they are gone? What if it’s only in our hearts and minds? What if that’s the same thing? These are the places we want to take the people who watch our video. It’s a powerful message about love, and the hope that it’s waiting on the other side.”

The ‘Find The Light’ video features the song’s subject imagining he is seeing his lost loved one everywhere he goes, from standing at a bus stop, waiting for a ride, to being with him as he brushes his teeth, to other situations. The reality of the situation will be left for viewers to learn on their own. It works well with the theme which McSweeney discussed.

Next To None Announces Sophomore Album’s Release Date

Courtesy: EMP Label Group/InsideOut Music

Next To None will release its sophomore album this summer.

Phases will be released July 7 via EMP Label Group in North America and InsideOut Music in Europe.  The announcement this week comes on the heels of the completion of the band’s European tour with Haken.

Work on the new record started last October and took approximately four months. Drummer Max Portnoy said the band in whole has been anticipating the album’s release.  He said that was because of the work put in by the band’s members in making the album become a reality.

“We’re so excited to finally be releasing our new album” Portnoy said.  “We feel it’s a huge step forward for the band and shows a much heavier and much more technical side.  This album is very special to us because it’s the first time we recorded and self-produced our entire album.  We were able to create music that is completely our own.  Every note, every sound, every word came from us, and we can’t wait for you all to hear it.  I suppose you could say what we’ve done here is do more of everything we did before but the greater experience we now have has helped us become better at what we want to do.”

Phases marks the debut for new guitarist Derrick Schneider with the band.  Schneider joined the band from a recommendation by former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Rob “Bumblefoot” Thal, who also made a guest appearance on the band’s debut album.  Ryland Holland left the band left the band last year to study at Berklee College of Music.

The band will hit the road alongside label mates Doll Skin this summer in celebration of the album’s release. The dates for that tour will be announced soon.  More information on those dates is available online now along with all of the band’s latest news and more at:

The Nova Collective unveiled this week, the video for the lead single from its upcoming debut album The Further Side, which will be released March 10 via Metal Blade Records.

The band—comprised of members of Between The Buried and Me, Haken, Trioscapes and Cynic—unveiled an in-studio video featuring a performance of the album’s lead single ‘Dancing Machines.’ The video can be viewed online now here.

The song’s arrangement is a composition that will appeal to fans of Scale The Summit, Liquid Tension Experiment, Trioscapes and others of that ilk.

The Further Side will be available on CD, black 180-gram vinyl, and limited edition clear-red marble LP as well as via digital outlets.  The record’s clear-red marble pressing is being limited to only 200 copies, so supplies of that pressing are very limited.  Audiences can pre-order The Further Side online now here.

Nova Collective was born in 2014 when bassist Dan Briggs (Between the Buried and Me, Trioscapes) and guitarist Richard Henshall (Haken) starting discussing music via e-mail.  The pair fleshed out some demos not long after discussions started. Drummer Matt Lynch (Trioscapes, Cynic) and keyboardist Pete Jones (ex-Haken) came on board not too much later, helping to finish the album.

The band was written and composed on both sides of the Atlantic.  Session files were shared between the band’s members until it was possible for them to rehearse and record the music together.

Those joint sessions began in early 2015 with engineer Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, The Contortionist) at the helm.  Rich Mouser (Transatlantic, Spock’s Beard, Neal Morse Band) mixed the record.
