NBC’s modern classic teen dramedy Freaks and Geeks only ran for eighteen episodes when it originally aired on NBC from 1999 – 2000. In the time since it ended its initial run on the “Peacock Network” the short-lived series has since gone on to be a cult favorite among audiences. It proved to be such a favorite among certain audiences that in 2004 the series was released in its own full-series DVD box set by Shout! Factory. Now nearly twelve years after its initial home release Shout! Factory is revisiting the series and re-issuing it in its entirety on Blu-ray.

Shout! Factory has announced that it will release Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series on Blu-ray on Tuesday, March 22nd. The series’ eighteen-episode run has been re-mastered from new 4K scans of the series’ original camera negatives. Each episode is presented both in its original 1.33:1 ratio and an enhanced 1.78:1 widescreen presentation and will be spread across nine discs. This presentation greatly expands the footage, revealing never before seen pieces of the series in its original presentation. There will also be a number of extras for true fans of the series included in the set’s presentation.

Freaks and Geeks only lasted for one season in its initial run. But in that time it earned an Emmy Awardfor its entertaining and authentic portrayal of high school life in the 80s in all of its ups and downs. The series was created by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters, Spy), executive produced by Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, This is 40, Pineapple Express) and starred some of today’s biggest names in their younger years, including: Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother, The Muppets, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), James Franco (Flyboys, Spiderman 1 – 3, Pineapple Express, Date Night), Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, Neighbors, This Is The End), and Linda Cardellini (ER, Scooby Doo, The Avengers: Age of Ultron).

Freaks and Geeks: The Complete Series will be available on Blu-ray in stores and online on Tuesday, March 22nd. It will retail for MSRP of 119.00 but can be pre-ordered now direct via Shout! Factory’s online store at a discounted price of $79.99. More information on this and other titles from Shout! Factory is available online now at:

Actor Jason Segel has recently been seen out and about with a new mystery woman.  The actor, who is best known for his role on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother, parted ways with former girlfriend Michelle Williams this past February.  Now, the identity of Segel’s new mystery companion has been revealed.  Her name is Bojana Novakovic.  The 31-year old Serbian/Australian actress is best known for her role in The Edge of Darkness.  She was spotted with Segel on June 9th.  She and Segel were seen out and about shopping and sharing lunch together in Hollywood.  Reports are that the photographs saw Segel affectionately wrapping his arm around Novakovic during the couple’s outing.

A source close to Segel noted of Segel and his new love interest that she definitely holds a special place in his heart.  “He had been dating some girls, a few. But think it may be a little more serious with this one,” the source said.  “He wanted to date, but he did learn that down the road he does want something more stable and serious.”

Segel and Williams broke up this past February after dating about a year.  Reports are that the parting of ways was mutual as the couple wasn’t able to make its long distance relationship work.  Williams is currently living in New York with her seven-year old daughter, Matilda.  Segel currently resides in Los Angeles.  In the time since the couple broke up, Williams has allegedly been seen out and about with artist Dustin Yellin.  The couple had been spotted at a park in Brooklyn on June 4th with Williams’ daughter.

The not so new Muppets is still great nostalgic family fun

Thank you Jason Segel.  Thank you Disney.  Thank you for bringing one of the most beloved franchises in the history of both television and movies back to life.  In an era when so few truly family friendly movies exist, the return of The Muppets is a breath of fresh air.

This new installment in the Muppets franchise isn’t exactly the most original work.  It lifts very liberally from most of the previous movies in the Muppets franchise.  And it goes without saying that it goes way over the top with its glut of blatantly Broadway style musical numbers.  Sure the other Muppets movies have musical numbers.  But not to the extent of this one.  All of that aside, star and co-writer Jason Segel is to be commended for his role in bringing this beloved franchise back to life.  Segel has stated that he grew up with Jim Henson’s characters.  That would explain the constant references to the previous Muppets movies.  Considering that, Segel and co. can be forgiven for essentially rehashing said movies and tossing them into a big pot for this flick.  It could be argued that making so many references to the other Muppets movies might even go so far as to raise interest in them, and bring that much more interest in the Muppets mong this new generation.

For the issues that The Muppets has, there’s also plenty of good in it.  The most obvious of the movie’s positive aspects is in the statement of The Muppets’ relevance in today’s cultural world..  The story presents that Muppets in a world in which they are no longer relevant, or so they think.  That is until Walter and his brother,  Gary (played by Jason segel) try to get the gang back together.  It’s not the first time that’s been done in a Muppets movie.  In the real world, of course, the Muppets have always been relevant.  There has really never been a time when the Muppets haven’t been relevant.  Now thanks to this new movie, Kermit, Miss PIggy, Animal, Rolf, and all the rest will likely be even more relevant than ever.  It’s kept these beloved characters alive for a whole new generation.  And with any luck, this new generation will carry the Muppets torch lit for the generation that follows it.  More than likely, as the movie’s ending shows, there’s little rason to worry about that.  Suffice to say that while this new incarnation of The Muppets isn’t overly original, Jim Henson would still be proud of it if he were with us
