Skatepunk band Handheld premiered the video for its latest single this week.
The band debuted the video for its single, ‘Leaving Candyland‘ Thursday. The band premiered the single by itself last month. The video pays tribute to the late great actor John Candy. It does this by presenting the band in famous scenes from beloved John Candy movies, such as Uncle Buck, Spaceballs, and Planes, Trains, & Automobiles as the song plays over the visualization.
The band talked about the video in a prepared statement.
“We wanted to pay tribute to the great human that was John Candy and honour his life in a unique way, the statement reads. “We picked 6 of our all-time favourite John Candy roles which included: Barf from Spaceballs, Gus from Home Alone, Chet from The Great Outdoors, Del from Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Yosh of The Schmengie Brothers (SCTV) and Uncle Buck from you guessed it… Uncle Buck. Then for each character we shot an homage to our favourite scenes, sprinkled in some punk rock flavorings and what you get is one hell of a good time. This video is definitely big in Sheboygan.”
‘Leaving Candyland’ is the second single from the band’s new album, Canadian Tragedy, which is scheduled for release June 14 through Thousand Islands Records. When released, the album will be the band’s first new music in 14 years. The band released the album’s lead single, ‘Bend The Iron‘ in March.
The song’s musical arrangement is an immediately infectious pop punk style composition that lends itself easily to comparison to works from the likes of Blink-182, Sum 41, and others of that ilk. That is evidenced through its upbeat, positive energy and overall instrumentation.
The positive vibes generated through the song’s arrangement do well to illustrate the positivity in the song’s lyrical theme, which the band talked about in a prepared statement.
“Certain people can leave a lasting impression on you and make you laugh,” the statement reads. “‘Leaving Candyland’ is about Thanksgiving, travel, sales, coaching, polka, family, a radio dj, being your own friend, Christmas, and more polka, oh… and eating a giant steak.”
