ABC’s broadcast team is going to have a special guest Thursday night when it broadcasts Game 6 of the 2016 NBA Finals.

Turner Sports sideline reporter Craig Sager will join the team of Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy, Mark Jackson, and Doris Burke in Thursday night’s broadcast.  The special one-night-only appearance will see Sager join Burke courtside throughout the game’s broadcast on ABC.  This is a very special one-night-only appearance for Sager alongside Burke and company, who are normally competition to Turner Sports.

Sager has released a statement noting his honor at being invited to join Breem and company for Thursday night’s broadcast and his intent to add to the broadcast, not distract from it.  “I’d like to thank Turner and ESPN for approaching me with this tremendous opportunity to be part of The Finals broadcast team,” he said.  “I’ve been watching the series very closely and, while I do not want to distract in any way from the event itself, I look forward to being in the building for what will be an incredibly exciting Game 6.  The NBA community is a very special one and this is a great honor.”

John Wildhack is ESPN Executive Vice President of Production and programming.  He espoused Sager’s reputation as an NBA broadcaster in bringing him in for the broadcast in his own statement.  “Craig is an iconic member of the NBA family who indelibly makes his mark on each and every broadcast. I know our entire team is delighted to work with Craig for Game 6. We all agree his professional reputation is second-to-none, though it’s his personal reputation – that of class, selflessness and respect – which makes this even more special for our team. We hope that this will be a special night for Craig and for NBA fans.”  Wildhack was also certain to note Sager’s interest in the opportunity for bringing him on board for the broadcast as well as his [Wildhack’s] respect for those at Turner Sports in arranging Sager’s appearance.  “We are grateful for his interest and for the continued collaboration with our friends at Turner.”

Sager has worked with Turner Sports for 34 years.  He joined the company in 1982.  This summer he will be honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at The 2016 ESPYS presented by Capital One on ABC.  ESPN’s annual awards broadcast, it is scheduled to air Wednesday, July 13th on ABC.  Sager was diagnosed with leukemia in 2014.

There’s good news for all the Tim Tebow fans out there. He might have been cut from the Eagles roster. But Philly’s loss is The SEC Network’s gain.

Tim Tebow will return to The SEC Network broadcast team this weekend on the network’s travelling two-hour college football pre-game show SEC Nation. Tebow will return to his post as one of the show’s analysts when it broadcasts the matchup of the Commodores and Bulldogs this Saturday, September 12th live from Nashville. Saturday’s broadcast will come live from the campus of Vanderbilt University beginning at 10am ET (9am CT) prior to kickoff.

John Wildhack, ESPN Executive VP discussed Tebow’s return to The SEC Network with the media noting that there was never a second thought about the door being open for Tebow should he want to return. “Tim quickly developed into an excellent analyst last year, and we were not shy about acknowledging his home at ESPN should he be available to return,” he said of Tebow. The former college football standout previously worked as part of the SEC Network’s broadcast team before being given the opportunity this season to follow his NFL dream.

SEC Nation debuted its sophomore season last Saturday, September 5th at Arkansas. Joe Tessitore anchored the broadcast. He was joined by analyst Greg McElroy. Tebow’s return to SEC Nation gives the broadcast three National Championship-winning analysts with a total of five SEC Championships among them.

NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson shocked the sports world this week when he announced that he had made the decision to part ways with ESPN.  He released a statement explinaing that his decision was based on his feeling that he was unable to balance his commitment to ESPN and everything else going on in his life.  He added in his statement that despite his departure, the split was amicable on both sides.  His official statement reads as follows:

“I love ESPN.  Unfortunately, due to the nature of my schedule and other commitments, I don’t feel confident that I can continue to devote the time needed to thrive in my role. I will always feel a strong connection to the ESPN family and I enjoyed working with them very much. I’d like to thank John Skipper, John Wildhack, Mark Gross, Kim Belton, Amina Hussein, Mark Summer, Adam Hertzog, Bob Rauscher, Stuart Scott, Mike Wilbon, Jon Barry, Jalen Rose, Bill Simmons, Chris Broussard and the many others at ESPN for the wonderful opportunity to talk about the game I love. They are the best in the business. “

John Wildhack, ESPN Executive VP of Production released a statement Thursday offering praise for Johnson and noting that the network has already started weighing its options for a commentator for the upcoming NBA season.  Wildhack noted in his statement:  Earvin “Magic” Johnson informed us today that he’ll no longer be part of our NBA coverage due to his other commitments. We appreciate Magic’s contributions and wish him well in his future endeavors. We are in the process of determining our NBA commentator roles for the upcoming season.

Jonson’s announcement comes only days after ESPN announced the signing of fellow NBA veteran Doug Collins to help cover its NBA broadcasts during the 2013-2014 season.  Collins is just the latest acquisition for ESPN’s NBA coverage.  A number of other veterans have already been signed, too.  More on this and other stories is available online at http://www.facebook.com/NBAonESPN and http://espn.com/nba.  To keep up with the latest sports and entertainment news and reviews, go online to http://www.facebook.com/philspicks and “Like” it.  Fans can always keep up with the latest sports and entertainment news and reviews in the Phil’s Picks blog at https://philspicks.wordpress.com.

ESPN fans will be seeing a lot more of veteran college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit.  The two-time Sports Emmy Award winner has signed a new deal with “The Sports Leader” that will keep him there through 2022.  He earned the award for “Best Studio Analyst” in 2010 and 2011.  He will continue to call ABC’s Saturday Night Football package and will also make weekly appearances on a number of ESPN shows including: ESPN College Game Day built by The Home Depot and College Football Live.  This season marks Herbstreit’s eighteenth season as co-analyst on the prior of the two.

When asked about the new deal, ESPN Executive VP of Production John Wildhack expressed his pleasure at having the deal finalized.  “Kirk Herbstreit is synonymous with college football’s biggest stage and moments. He is at the top of his game and he’s ours into the next decade. We’re thrilled,” he said.  Herbstreit shared that sentiment, adding “I’ve always felt that ESPN and ABC are the home of college football and even more so now that they have the College Football Playoff for 12 years. Considering the opportunities that lay ahead and the great people I get to work with every day, it was an easy decision to stay with the company that gave me my start.”

This season, he will also get back to his radio roots.  He will start working with Colin Cowherd for his show, The Herd with Colin CowherdThe Herd airs on ESPN Radio Monday – Friday from 10am – 1pm EST.

The new, nine-year deal will see Herbstreit back in the booth again for this year’s Rose Bowl and BCS Title National Championship.  When the BCS system switches over in 2015 to the College Football Playoff, Herbstreit will call one National Semifinal and the National Championship each season.  Along with this, he will also make contributions on SportsCenter, online at ESPN.com, and in ESPN The Magazine.

Herbstreit’s College Game Day cohort Lee Corso shared his thoughts on the announcement, adding that it is because of Herbstreit that College Game Day is as popular as it is today.  “ESPN and College GameDay are better because of Kirk. He is not only a talented analyst, he is an even better person, family man and an asset to ESPN,” he said.  “And I am proud of all he has accomplished. To him I say, ‘Not so fast my friend…’ I look forward to working next to Kirk beyond my 86th birthday!”
