2016 has been an outstanding year for new music.  New albums from every genre have flooded the market.  While albums take center stage for so many audiences and critics alike, they are not the only new recordings that are deserving of attention.  EPs deserve just as much attention as albums this year and every year.  Keeping that in mind, this critic has maintained a list of the year’s top new EPs throughout the year.

Now with the year’s final weeks winding down, Phil’s Picks begins its annual “Best Of” lists with a list of the year’s top new EPs as, again, they are deserving of as much attention as the mass of albums released across the board.  This year’s list is topped by hard rock outfit Red Tide Rising’s new EP Voices.  Also included in this year’s list are new EPs from Fenix TX, Silvertung, Orgy and many others.

As in previous years, the lists presented by Phil’s Picks are topped by the year’s top 10 new releases.  An extra five releases worthy of honorable mention are included, too.  That brings each list’s count to 15.  Having said all of that, here is the first of Phil’s Picks “Best Of” lists for 2016.  It is 2016’s Top 10 New EPs.

Tunstall was very candid in discussing her new album in a recent interview, noting that Kin almost didn’t happen.  That was because she was in a place only a few years ago that saw her step away from music.  “As an artist I feel like I died,” she says. “I stopped. I gave up. I didn’t want to do it anymore,” she said.  She went on to note that Kin did happen because she had time to do some thinking, and in turn crafted Kin.  “The truth is, I’ve finally made peace with being a pop songwriter,” she said.  “This record was very much embracing my dharma as an artist, which is to write positive songs that have muscle, but also show their vulnerability.”

KT Tunstall is back.

The Scottish-born, L.A.-based performer is releasing her new EP Golden State today.  The four-song record comes three years after the release of her most recent full-length studio recording Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon (2013).  It is available now online via Barnes & Noble Booksellers’ online store.  Audiences will also be able to pick up Tunstall’s new EP in stores on CD, as well as digitally.  The nationwide bookseller will be the only outlet where audiences will be able to pick up her new EP in physical form, as an added note.

Tunstall discussed the new record in a recent interview, basically hinting that it offers some surprises along the way.  “This is an album all about joy, although some of these songs are like cats,” she said.  “They’re really furry and sweet and then they f*****’ scratch you, and they won’t let you put a leash on them, ever.”  Tunstall and her band are currently touring in support of her new record.  They are making their way across the U.S. and will wrap the North American leg of their tour July 9th.  After that they will take some time off to recharge before heading overseas for the European leg of their tour, which begins July 23rd in Lucerne, Switzerland.  More information on Golden State is available online now along with all of her tour dates, news, and more at:
