ESPN fans will be seeing a lot more of veteran college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit.  The two-time Sports Emmy Award winner has signed a new deal with “The Sports Leader” that will keep him there through 2022.  He earned the award for “Best Studio Analyst” in 2010 and 2011.  He will continue to call ABC’s Saturday Night Football package and will also make weekly appearances on a number of ESPN shows including: ESPN College Game Day built by The Home Depot and College Football Live.  This season marks Herbstreit’s eighteenth season as co-analyst on the prior of the two.

When asked about the new deal, ESPN Executive VP of Production John Wildhack expressed his pleasure at having the deal finalized.  “Kirk Herbstreit is synonymous with college football’s biggest stage and moments. He is at the top of his game and he’s ours into the next decade. We’re thrilled,” he said.  Herbstreit shared that sentiment, adding “I’ve always felt that ESPN and ABC are the home of college football and even more so now that they have the College Football Playoff for 12 years. Considering the opportunities that lay ahead and the great people I get to work with every day, it was an easy decision to stay with the company that gave me my start.”

This season, he will also get back to his radio roots.  He will start working with Colin Cowherd for his show, The Herd with Colin CowherdThe Herd airs on ESPN Radio Monday – Friday from 10am – 1pm EST.

The new, nine-year deal will see Herbstreit back in the booth again for this year’s Rose Bowl and BCS Title National Championship.  When the BCS system switches over in 2015 to the College Football Playoff, Herbstreit will call one National Semifinal and the National Championship each season.  Along with this, he will also make contributions on SportsCenter, online at ESPN.com, and in ESPN The Magazine.

Herbstreit’s College Game Day cohort Lee Corso shared his thoughts on the announcement, adding that it is because of Herbstreit that College Game Day is as popular as it is today.  “ESPN and College GameDay are better because of Kirk. He is not only a talented analyst, he is an even better person, family man and an asset to ESPN,” he said.  “And I am proud of all he has accomplished. To him I say, ‘Not so fast my friend…’ I look forward to working next to Kirk beyond my 86th birthday!”

Roughly three years have passed since golfer Tiger Woods and his now ex-wife Elin Nordegren divorced as a result of Woods’ cheating scandal.  But ask Nordegren, and she will tell anyone that there are still some very hurt feelings.  In an interview with Us Weekly magazine, Nordegren notes that she “hates Lindsey Vonn and everything about this romance.”

The thirty-seven year old Woods and his current romantic interest started dating in fall 2012.  They went public with their relationship this past March.  Among the couples dates were outings to NYC’s Met Gala this past May and a handful out dates with Woods’ children, five-year old Sam and four-year old Charlie, whom he had with Nordegren.

Nordegren goes on to note in her interview with Us Weekly magazine that she is “angry Tiger even has visitation rights to the kids.”  Nordegren herself has allegedly gotten back into the dating pool, according to the article.  It notes that she has been spotted with coal magnate Chris Cline earlier this year.  Cline is said to live near Nordegren’s $12 million beach side estate in North Palm Beach, Florida.

When asked what Woods thinks of her feelings over what has happened, Nordegren noted that “he doesn’t care about her” and that “He’s so egotistical.”

On the other side of things, Vonn has spoken on her relationship with Woods saying that being in the public eye has “been difficult and interesting…But we’re dealing with it and we’re happy and that’s all that matters.”

Anne Hathaway has been all over the news ever since Oscar night.  It’s largely been for her much talked about awards night attire.  But Us Weekly has a new feature focusing not only on her dress, but also on her acceptance speech.  In a brand new interview with Us Weekly, Hathaway showed a more vulnerable side, admitting that comments about her previous acceptance speeches had upset her.  “It does get to me,” the 30 year-old actress noted.  “But you have to remember in life that there’s a positive to every negative and a negative to every positive.”  A source close to Hathaway added in the article that “She was very aware that she had been the butt of everyone’s jokes.”  The result was that Hathaway practiced her Oscar speech very hard so she would be more likeable.

In discussing the now infamous Oscar dress, the same source close to Hathaway noted that she actually had four dresses in the running, including one by Valentino, who had also designed the dress for her 2012 wedding to Adam Shulman.  The entire article is available online now at http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/anne-hathaway-practiced-her-oscar-speech-a-lot-to-be-more-likable-2013262#ixzz2M18a9xrI.  To get even more celebrity news from Us Weekly, just go online to http://www.facebook.com/UsWeekly or http://www.UsMagazine.com

ESPN The Magazine’s “Analytics” Issue Hits Newsstands Friday

The latest issue of ESPN The Magazine will have a special new feature piece.  The second annual “Analytics” issue examines the rise of “wins above replacement” in Major League Baseball in the article War is the Answer.”  The article, written by Baseball Prospectus writer Sam Miller, gives readers an in-depth look at how next level metrics are changing what we think we know about sports.  This is thanks in large part to last season’s AL MVP debate centered on Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout.  Miller’s article encourages fans to embrace, not fight Wins Above Replacement, arguing that it is MLB’s signature stat.

Miller’s article is one of the key features in the new issue of EPN The Magazine.  As a companion piece of sorts, it will also include a piece on how the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers use advanced metrics to rebuild its franchise.  That’s all in Jordan Brenner’s article, “You Can Call Them Trailblazers.”  Morty Ain’s article, “The Year analytics Took Over The World” brings everything together for this issue.  It adds stats and figures to show their impact on hirings, firings and even in-game decisions last year around the sports world.  That’s all in the new article, due to hit store shelves this Friday, February 22nd.  Stories from the world of NASCAR and the NHL highlighting how analytics affects each are also included in this new issue. That and much more are all available in the new issue of ESPN The Magazine.

An added note for readers:  ESPN The Magazine is sponsoring the Research Paper of the Year Award for the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.  The conference was founded in 2006.  Co-Chaired by Daryl Morley and Jessica Gelman, it offers professionals and students a platform to discuss the ever growing role of analytics throughout the world of competitive sports.  Over 100 papers have been submitted for this year’s conference.  And now, readers can read each of the finalists and vote on them via SportsNation.  The fan’s choice will be announced at the next conference, next Friday and Saturday, March 1st and 2nd
