In anticipation of the album’s release, the band premiered the album’s lead single, ‘Be Hard On Yourself (III) You Can Learn‘ Friday. The song, which is just one movement of the overall three-part opus, is everything that audiences have come to expect from the band throughout its catalog. There are moments of contemplation here, as well as more energetic moments. The whole is a powerful, familiar prog rock work from the band.
No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the release announcing the new album details and single premiere. Listening closely through the song, it seems to have a sense of urgency, reminding listeners that they can do better and be better, and to not just sit on their hands about this matter. That is just this critic’s interpretation and should not be taken as the only interpretation.
