Robin Roberts To Be Honored At TNT’s Annual NBA Awards

Courtesy: TNT/Turner Sports/NBA

Good Morning America anchor and veteran broadcaster Robin Roberts will receive a special honor at next month’s NBA Awards presented by Kia.

Roberts will receive the Sager Strong Award at the ceremony, which will air at 9 p.m., June 24 on TNT.  The Sager Strong Award is named for iconic TNT sidelines reporter Craig Sager and is presented annually to one person who is a trailblazer that has exemplified courage, faith, compassion and grace.

Sager died in 2016 after losing his battle with cancer. He was known as much for his bright, colorful outfits as his coverage of the NBA. Roberts, who is known for her leadership at ABC’s Good Morning America, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. She was named co-anchor for GMA in 2005.

Prior to her appointment at ABC, Roberts became a well-known figure at ESPN, mostly for her work on ESPN’s SporsCenter.  Roberts started her broadcast career in Mississippi before eventually moving to Nashville and Atlanta.  That path would eventually lead Roberts to ESPN and then to ABC.

Roberts was inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2016.  She has also been honored with the Gracie Award this year and the George Foster Peabody Award in 2012, the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2013 ESPYs and the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2014.

Other recipients of the Sager Award are figures, such as Monty Williams (2017) and Dikembe Mutombo (2018).

This year marks the third year for TNT’s NBA Awards.  The ceremony honors the NBA’s top performers from the 2018-19 season.  The program is produced by Dick Clark Productions.

TNT Announces Thursday Night NBA Double Header Schedule

Courtesy: TNT/Turner Sports/NBA

TNT will air a double header schedule of NBA games Thursday night.

The Rockets and Thunder open the night at 8 p.m. in a Western Conference showdown.  The Bucks and Warriors follow at 10:30 p.m. in a cross-conference matchup of East vs. West.

Game 1 will be interesting in its own right as the host Thunder has proven so far in the season to be better at home than on the road at 3-2, 2-2 respectively.  Meanwhile, the Rockets have been decidedly better on the road (4-1) than at home (0-4), so while the Thunder leads the Thunder in the Western Conference, Thursday’s match is certain to be a tight one on both sides of the ball.

Game 2 will be just as interesting as Game 1 because both the Bucks and the host Warriors have proven so far to be better at home than on the road this season.  The Bucks have gone 6-1 at home and 2-1 on the road so far while the Warriors have gone 6-1 at home and 4-1 on the road.

Milwaukee has gone 8-1 in its last 10 games and won its most recent game.  Meanwhile Golden State has gone 9-1 in its last 10 games, and is in the midst of a strong 8-game win streak, so the edge seems to go to Golden State, going strictly by the numbers.

Marv Albert will have the call in Game 1.  he will be joined by analyst Chris Webber for additional commentary.  Reporter Ros Gold-Onwude will be courtside with all of the game’s latest interviews and news.

Kevin Harlan will have the call for Game 2.  He will be joined by analyst Reggie Miller for additional commentary.  Reporter Kristen Ledlow will have all of the game’s latest interviews and news.

TNT To Feature Two Conference Matchups In Tonight’s Double Header Schedule

Courtesy: TNT/Turner Sports/NBA

TNT will feature two conference matchups tonight on its NBA on TNT broadcast schedule.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors are up first on the night in a 2-3 matchup in the Eastern Conference.  The host Raptors (28 – 11) are second in the east right ahead of the Cavs (26 – 14).

TNT’s TNT NBA Tip-Off precedes tonight’s broadcasts beginning at 7 p.m. ET live from the CES in Las Vegas with discussions from Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Ernie Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal.  The group will also provide live studio coverage throughout the night for each game.

The San Antonio Spurs (28 – 14) will take on the Los Angeles Lakers (13 – 27) in the night’s second game.  While not a first versus worst matchup, the Western Conference foes’ matchup is still critical for both teams as the Lakers will look to keep from falling any further into the Western Conference basement as they face the Spurs.

Speaking of the Spurs, San Antonio currently sits third in the Western Conference, only five games back from the conference-leading Golden Stat Warriors.  That means that the Spurs will be playing hard to gain some ground on the Warriors.  Coverage of tonight’s matchup is scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m. ET.
