Tennis Hall of Famer John McEnroe will be seen on television a lot more in the coming months.
ESPN announced yesterday that the veteran tennis star and ESPN analyst will start making appearances on SportsCenter discussing a variety of topics other than just tennis. He will also make appearances on ESPN2’s Olbermann and ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike which also runs on ESPN2 each morning. Topping off his newly expanded role with the Worldwide Leader in Sports, McEnroe will also be on ESPN Radio New York (98.7 FM).
McEnroe shared his thoughts on this major announcement with the press. He was clearly happy about the opportunity to branch out beyond the world of tennis and into the overall sports spectrum. “I am excited about my expanded role with ESPN,” he said. It should be interesting and fun, as a life-long sports fan, to be able to voice my opinions on a variety of sports programs and forums, alongside some of the most talented people in the industry. The broad platform offered by ESPN makes it the perfect place for me to bring my point of view to all sports, not just tennis. ”
John Wildhack, ESPN Executive VP of Programming and Production echoed McEnroe’s thoughts. “Before John was a superstar in tennis, he was a sports fan…with sharp opinions and wit, as we’ve seen on our tennis productions,” Wildhack said. “His no-holds barred insights and personality will enliven whatever program or platform he is on.”
McEnroe is a seventeen-time Major winner. Seven of those Major wins were in singles competition. Nine were in doubles. And one was in mixed doubles. He has covered the US Open for ESPN since 2009 and Wimbledon since 2012. He holds seventy-seven titles throughout his career, including four US Open titles, and three at Wimbledon. He has also won ten more titles in doubles and mixed competition. His success goes all the way back to his days at Stanford, where he won titles in both the singles and team categories.
