Independent rock band Pharmacose premiered the latest single from its new project, Ascencion’s Constraint this month, along with its companion visualizer.

The band premiered the record’s new single, ‘Obey‘ and its visualizer May 6. The song is the record’s second single, behind the recently premiered single, ‘Cleanse,’ which the band premiered in March through Ghost Cult Magazine.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Obey’ is a dark, brooding composition. The use of the keyboards, electronics, drums, and vocals together to make it easily comparable to works from the likes of Tool, Gary Numan and Nine Inch Nails.

The lyrical theme featured in the song centers on “corporate corruption in the modern age” according to information presented about the premiere of the song and video.

The visualizer that accompanies Pharmacose’s new single is a simple presentation. It features a man in front of what is either a set of large windows or TV monitors. The words “You are being watched” are presented in large font in front of him on the windows/screens. The visual plays directly into the song’s lyrical theme.

Pharmacose’s new album and its singles are being accompanied by a novel that helps tell the story in the new, forthcoming concept record. One chapter is being released with the debut of each single. Audiences can download the story’s first episode now through Amazon.

Front man Wes Jones recently talked about the concept in the album’s story.

“I have always loved concept albums, and one of my major goals has always been to do one,” Jones said. “I didn’t think it was going to happen this soon, but the lockdowns happened, and all of a sudden I had nothing to do. We had been gearing up for some shows to promote the intended release of Prescription Fiction, but obviously none of that happened. I didn’t want to sit around doing nothing, so I decided it was as good a time as any to start work on that record.

Jones continued, “I had been kicking around some possible concepts for years, but it wasn’t until the lockdowns happened that I was able to commit to one. Even before the pandemic, I found myself ordering more and more things online, and it made me wonder just how dependent I’d become on corporations as well as how big and powerful many have become or are becoming. I’ve also been concerned about how wage stagnation and inflation are going to affect your average person in the future, and so I just combined the two ideas and that became the setting of the novel.”

Alt-rock outfit Pharmacose premiered the lead single from its new concept project, Ascension’s Constraint this week.

The band premiered the project’s lead single, ‘Cleanse You’ Thursday through Ghost Cult Magazine. According to information provided, the project presents the story of the United States in the 22nd Century. The nation’s financial system has collapsed and the federal government has taken over everything.

Front man Wes Jones talked about the album’s concept and how it played into its lead single.

I’ve also been concerned about how wage stagnation and inflation are going to affect your average person in the future, and so I just combined the two ideas and that became the setting of the novel.”

The debut of Pharmacose’s new single comes two months after the band debuted its then latest single, ‘Smash‘.

Pharmacose Takes On Conspiracy Theories In New Single

Independent hard rock band Pharmacose debuted the lead single from its new album last week.

The band premiered its new single, ‘Smash‘ Jan. 20. The song, which is available to stream and download through Spotify and Apple Music, is featured in the band’s forthcoming album, Prescription Fiction. The record is scheduled for release this spring with its exact release date under consideration.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Smash’ is a melodic hard rock style composition. Its melodies and harmonies make it an easy fit for any active rock radio station programmer’s playlist. That is because it sounds like so much of that is already on most mainstream stations.

Front man Wes Jones said the song’s lyrical theme takes the band in a less traveled direction than in its existing songs.

“When I was trying to decide what to write the lyrics about, I felt that we had done a lot on mental health, so I wanted to branch out a bit. I have always been interested in what I call the ‘fun conspiracy theories,’ notably things such as UFOs, ancient aliens, the Mothman, etc,” said Jones. “Growing up, I had a great uncle who was a brilliant aerospace engineer, and he was into all this stuff. It was really cool to see someone with such a strong science and engineering background and was into all this. So, I wanted to explore that interest some more. I came to realize that reading about those subjects made me feel very isolated, since it’s not a mainstream way of thinking. It made me a bit sad to think that. It made me wonder how many people were knowledgeable in this area but took this information to the grave because no one was interested in hearing about it.

Added Jones, “These realizations were the literal ‘smash.’ The irony is that now I feel a bit more justified due to all the information about UFOs that came out over the summer. I suppose that the sentiment this song conveys is a bit dated now with all this crazy footage being released, but I think the feelings of isolation are legitimate.”

Jones concluded, “I’m by no means saying that I think aliens are here and the Mothman exists, but I think we should be open to the notion that the normal person has no idea about what’s really going on.”

Pharmacose Debuts ‘The Clearing’ Video

Pharmacose debuted the video for its latest single this week.

The band debuted the video for its new single ‘The Clearing‘ Tuesday.  The single is featured in the band’s recently released EP Prescription Fiction Pt. 1.  Directed by Kurt St. Thomas, the video features front man Wes Jones performing while his unseen band mates add their own touch to the composition.  The psychedelic imagery used in the video is meant to help translate the song’s lyrical theme, which according to Jones, focuses on a person experience that he had.

Jones discussed that topic in a recent interview.

“I wrote ‘The Clearing’ during a recovery phase of a manic episode I had a couple of years back,” he said.  “I was trying to get my life back in order and was trying to come to terms with my diagnosis. During the verses I am almost reliving what I felt like during the episode: ‘Raging and reckless, out of control.’ But the chorus is me, looking backward, making sense of what was going on during that time. There is a sort of internal dialogue that I am having, trying to convince myself that things are going to be okay. I think in the end I do manage to convince myself, but not before reliving the chaos.”

The musical arrangement that accompanies the song’s thought provoking lyrical content helps to illustrate the emotion that Jones felt as he dealt with the situation that he discussed.  It is very upbeat with a certain punk type of element to its overall sound.

The band’s debut of the video for ‘The Clearing’ comes almost four months after the band debut the video for the EP’s lead single, ‘Checked Out.’

Pharmacose Debuts ‘Checked Out’ Video

Independent alt-rock band Pharmacose debuted the video for its latest single this week.

The band debuted the video for the song ‘Checked Out‘ Tuesday.  The video, directed by Kurt St. Thomas, finds the band performing its new single in a padded room backdrop. The setting is meant to help illustrate the song’s lyrical concept, which front man Wes Jones recently discussed during an interview.

“‘Checked Out’ has a more alternative-leaning sound and that just happened,” he said.  “[Fellow Pharmacose member] Lu [Rubino] and I wrote it and recorded it in one session,” he said.  “I had a musical idea, and Lu took that and expanded on it.  Things just came together organically.  I had started to write the lyrics and I wasn’t sure where they were going.  I was kind of stuck, so Lu and I began talking about how we were feeling around that time.  I personally was still trying to get my medication regimen right, so I wasn’t feeling bad, but I wasn’t feeling very good, either.  I had isolated myself, mostly playing video games and training jiu jitsu.  Lu used the phrase “checked out” while we were talking, and I jumped on that idea and finished writing the lyrics.  It’s about escapism using digital media, be it through video games or social media, and avoiding the real world.”

‘Checked Out’ is available to stream and download through Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon and Google Play.
