Early this spring, The Rolling Stones made headlines the world over when it did something that no band has ever done.  The band became the first rock act to ever perform a free, live show in the city of Havana.  Now this fall audiences will be able to experience that landmark concert for themselves when Eagle Rock Entertainment releases Havana Moon: The Rolling Stones Live in Cuba.

The new Rolling Stones live recording, captured by award-winning film director Paul Dugdale, will be released in stores and online on Friday, November 11th.

One million people turned out for the concert, which was held the very same week that President Obama became the first United States President to visit Cuba in 88 years.  His visit was touted by countless news agencies around the world as the “warm up act” for The Rolling Stones.

When the band took the stage, front man Mick Jagger addressed the crowd quoting fellow Bob Dylan as he said, “Finally the times are changing. Cuba, we are so happy to be here.  The concert’s extensive set list featured many of the band’s biggest hits including: ‘Brown Sugar,’ ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash,’ ‘It’s Only Rock N’ Roll,’ ‘Paint It Black,’ ‘Honky Tonk Women,’ ‘Start Me Up,’ and ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want,’ and ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction),’ among many other songs.  The complete track listing for the concert is noted below.

Martha & Friends’ Latest DVD Another “Magnificent” Holiday Themed Release

The new Martha & Friends Easter themed DVD, Martha’s Magnificent Egg is another entertaining feature for the entire family.  The new release finds young Martha and her friends working on designs for Easter eggs that will be entered for a chance to present one winning egg to the President himself at the annual White House Egg Roll.  But what story would be complete without conflict?  When Martha and her friends present a webcast on how to design eggs, her classmate Samantha copies her designs verbatim.  Martha’s friends aren’t too impressed by the young lady’s general lack of creativity, especially when it leads to a tie between Martha and Samantha in the contest.  But on the eve of the tie-breaking contest, Martha’s basket goes missing.  The kids find the basket the next morning, which leads to a happy ending for both Samantha and for Martha.  Kids and parents alike will enjoy and appreciate the morals of friendship and that winning isn’t everything presented at the story’s conclusion.

The friendship moral is just one positive to this latest release.  While it is entirely CG-based, the bright colors used both in the main feature and the companion webisodes will keep young viewers engaged.  The features’ music also plays its own role as it’s just subtle enough to help set each scene’s mood.  Among the bonus webisodes included on this disc is another Easter themed short as well as a Valentine’s Day short.  Both shorts and the other two each show audiences some crafty things to do from making cupcakes themed for each month of the year to making an armoire for cheap that will help keep one’s stuff organized.  And it can be made from stuff right in one’s own home.  This saves time and money, just as young Martha points out.

The bonus webisodes make a nice addition to this disc just as with the previous Halloween themed 2012 release.  Though there is one more bonus that kids and parents will enjoy.  That bonus is another of “Martha’s Craft Corner.”  This time, parents and kids can learn how to make a bunch of Easter themed crafts including: Chick Cakes, an Egg Wreath, Eggshell Flower Pots and plenty more.  Though, it should be noted that this feature might not work on some computers when put into their DVD drives. Parents would be well advised to try this feature on one’s own DVD player first since the compatibility issue might arise from one computer to the next.  That aside, it’s still nice to see that Vivendi and Gaiam have included Martha’s Craft Corner yet again.  It’s a great way to get kids into crafts and engaging their creative side.  On a deeper level, it’s a great way to get kids and parents interacting together.  In an age when the divide between kids and their parents is growing ever wider, this bonus is one more salvo in the fight to lessen that divide.  So, kudos is in order once again for Vivendi and Gaiam for this icing on a fun and festival holiday special.  It’s available now in stores and online.

The Presidents Re-Issue Adds Even More For Audiences

Courtesy: PBS

Binders, Bigbird, and great balls of fire.  Both our current President and his opponent are all over the television and radio this year.  And it’s not entirely for good reasons, either.  How many people out there remember the debates between other presidential candidates?  For that matter, how many people out there can name even half of the men who have led this great nation?  Thanks to PBS, both general viewers and students alike will be reminded of nearly a dozen of those men.  From Roosevelt to Truman to Reagan all the way up to Bill Clinton, this seventeen disc set is an excellent watch for anyone who has any interest in politics and political science both inside and outside the classroom.

There are those who have made certain allegations about PBS.  But in watching this series, perhaps those same people will change their tune in seeing how wrong they are.  It is a fully unbiased look at the lives of some of our nation’s most well known and respected leaders.  It pulls no punches, showing each President in his high times and low.  For instance, the program focusing on Clinton leaves nothing out, including the scandal centered on former intern Monica Lewinsky.  Perhaps one of the most interesting facts from the newly added piece on Clinton was that he apparently originally did not want to get involved in the Serbian conflict in the late 1990s.  From what the feature notes, he originally wanted to leave that conflict to NATO forces.  But amid growing pressure from the national and international community, he finally gave in and took the lead in the air war that ended things there.   His ongoing conflict with then Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was just as interesting.  Any movie buff will see some similarities to the Frank Capra helmed 1939 movie, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington in the pair’s ongoing conflict.

Another of the more interesting segments included in this updated re-issue focused on President Harry Truman.  Anyone who has any interest or knowledge of Presidential history will find his history to be unlike any of the other Presidents featured in the set.  Truman, as documented in the set, came from the most humble of roots.  He grew up in a less than well-to-do family in Missouri.  He was unlike nearly every President before and since.  He ended up marrying his wife Bessie after having first met her when he was only five years old.  Through all the years that he could have strayed, his heart never did.  Even when he spent part of his young adult life in Kansas City, he never strayed a single bit.  At that time, as the feature notes, Kansas City was a rather seedy area.  So seeing that he didn’t break from his upbringing even then is incredible.  Even more interesting is that even after having married Bessie, he moved into her mother’s home with her and dealt with her mother for many years without even the slightest problem from him.  There is so much more that audiences will learn about Truman here as he gets two of the discs in the total seventeen discs included in the set, as does Clinton.

The features on Clinton and Truman are just a couple examples of what viewers can expect in this newly re-issued set.  Also included are:  Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, LBJ, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter.  The material on these presidents is more than enough to last an entire semester for a college level political science class and an entire academic year in a public high school.

The Presidents is available now.  It can be ordered online at PBS’ online store, http://www.shoppbs.org
