‘Sleeping Lions’ Is Another Successful Effort From Otherwise

Otherwise is preparing to hit the road this weekend for a series of live dates in support of its latest full-length studio recording Sleeping Lions.  The band’s third album, it is scheduled to be released Sept. 22 in stores and online, and continues the success brought through the band’s first two albums – True Love Never Dies (2012) and Peace At All Costs (2014).  That is due in part to the mix of musical influences evident throughout the record.  The record’s collective lyrical content plays its own integral part in its overall presentation, too.  Its sequencing rounds out its most important elements.  When it is joined with the record’s musical arrangements and lyrical content, the whole of the noted elements makes it deserving of a spot on any critic’s list of the year’s top new hard rock albums.

Otherwise’s third full-length studio recording Sleeping Lions is a record that is deserving of a spot on any critic’s list of the year’s top new hard rock albums.  That is due in part to the musical arrangements presented over the course of the record’s 11-song, 44-minute run.  Right from the album’s outset, listeners are treated to a heavy, guitar-driven arrangement in ‘Angry Heart’ that lends itself easily to comparisons to so many songs from Alter Bridge.  The arrangement presented in the record’s title track, which comes early in the album’s run, changes things up instantly, conjuring thoughts of Shinedown.  Much the same can be said of the melodic hard rock arrangement presented in ‘Crocodile Tears.’ ‘Suffer,’ the album’s third track, changes things up just as much, leading to thoughts of Staind with its arrangement.  That is due both to the song’s arrangement and front man Adrian Patrick’s vocal delivery style here.  One could even compare the arrangement presented in ‘Close To The Gods’ to compositions from a handful of well-known hard rock acts including Soil, Drowning Pool, Sevendust and other similar acts.  These comparisons are just some of the ways in which the album’s musical arrangements prove so important to its presentation.  They show the album’s musical reach for all intents and purposes, which is clearly rather extensive.  Considering this, that reach builds a solid foundation for Sleeping Lions.  It is only one of the album’s key elements, too.  The album’s overall lyrical content is just as important to discuss as its musical arrangements.

The lyrical content presented throughout the course of Sleeping Lions is important to discuss because it is just as varied as the album’s musical arrangement.  Case in point is the lyrical content presented in the album’s closer, ‘Bloodline Lullaby.’  The song’s lyrical content comes across perhaps as Patrick (or one of his band mates) singing to a child before heading out on the road as he sings in the song’s lead verse, “Never worry child/Everything’s alright/It may take a while to see the good light/I’m right here with you/Always true/So don’t say goodbye/I’ll see you soon/Another day/Another moon.”  The song’s second verse lends itself just as much to that thought as Patrick sings, “Crazy as it seems/Life in the spotlight/Chasing down a dream/Living through a phone line/You are all I need/You’re my everything/Counting down the hours/Oh how the time flies/Running the miracle mile/Crossing the state line/I’m right here with you/Always true/So don’t say goodbye/I’ll see you soon/Another day/Another moon.”  It’s hardly the first time that a musician or act has ever crafted a song about life on the road and the strains connected therein.  But the lyrical approach taken here makes it original.  The addition of the heartfelt musical arrangement, which itself can be compared to compositions from so many of Otherwise’s current counterparts, adds to that emotional impact.  Considering this, the song becomes just one clear example of why the album’s lyrical content is just as important to its presentation as its musical arrangements.

The lyrical content presented in ‘Nothing To Me’ is another example of what makes this album’s lyrical content so important to discuss.  While the album’s closer presents a moving message of familial love in its lyrical content, ‘Nothing To Me’ is the polar opposite.  It is clearly a song about a broken relationship, but is certainly not the standard oh-woe-is-me message.  Rather, it presents a very self-confident tone in its wording as is evidenced right off the bat as Patrick sings, “So this is what you have been waiting for/Just to be uglier than me/I’m not a line in the sand/You sin has been wasted/And you’ve become the very thing that you hated/Careful/You might find what you’re looking for.”  That confidence continues in the song’s second verse as Patrick sings, “Yeah, you should focus on yourself/To pretend you’re not scared/I can tell that you’re shakin’/Don’t look down/Your safety net’s breakin’/Careful/You might find what you’re looking for.”  There is plenty of fiery energy behind these words thanks to Patrick’s delivery.  That fire and the message in the lyrics makes fully evident the message here.  As with ‘Bloodline Lullaby,’ it is not the first song of its style.  Other proud, confident breakup songs have been crafted by other bands, but the lyrical fashion in which that message was delivered here makes the message just as powerful and welcome as ever.  With that in mind, it makes the song yet another example of why the album’s lyrical content is so important to its overall presentation.  It still is not the last example of what makes the album’s lyrical content so important to discuss.  ‘Close To The Gods’ is yet one more example of what makes the album’s lyrical content so important to discuss.

The content presented in ‘Close To The Gods’ is another prime example of what makes Sleeping Lions’ lyrical content so important to discuss because it comes across as one of the record’s deepest songs, lyrically speaking.  Patrick sings in the song’s lead verse, “Are you willing to do/What it takes to be truthful/Can you cut through the filth/And get down to the beautiful” before singing in the song’s lead chorus, “Now I’m crawling on a face of stone/I’m trying hard to leave a mark/So reckless on a path unknown/Hoping to catch a spark/Getting close to the gods/And the devil is falling/Now there’s no way to stop/No escape from the calling/So you don’t fall behind/We’re holding the line/Fighting for life as we climb/Close to the gods/All the temples are falling/Getting close to the gods.”  Additionally, he sings in the song’s second verse, “Feel the energy slip/Through your hands as you witness/All the steel turn to rust/We are sand/We are ashes and dust.”  The message that is seemingly delivered here perhaps addresses people’s striving to be better than they are, trying to escape all of the world’s negativity and evil.  That is of course just this critic’s interpretation.  It would be interesting to find out what exactly Patrick is saying with the words presented here.  That depth in the song’s lyrical content shows once more why Sleeping Lions’ lyrical content is so important to the album’s overall presentation.  It most certainly is not the last example of what makes the album’s lyrical content so important.  The seemingly uplifting message in ‘Weapons,’ the hard-hitting commentary in the album’s title track and the contemplative reflection of ‘Angry Heart’ each present their own interesting thoughts.  Taking this into consideration along with the lyrical content not noted here, it should be clear why Sleeping Lions’ lyrical content is just as important to its overall presentation as its musical arrangements.  That collective content is not the last of the album’s most important elements.  Its overall sequencing rounds out its most important elements.

Sleeping Lions’ sequencing is just as important to discuss in analyzing the album as its musical and lyrical content because it of the time and thought that was clearly put into this part of the record’s presentation.  The album opens with full, fiery energy in its first two songs before presenting a slightly more reserved arrangement in ‘Suffer’ that still boasts its own energy.  The album’s energy and mood are relatively well-balanced from start to end.  For the most part, the album’s energy is maintained throughout the record even as the songs’ moods change from one work to the next.  Even as the album reaches its finale, the energy barely lets up.  The song’s verses are quite reserved, but the choruses are just as powerful as any of the album’s other compositions.  Considering this, it becomes clear why the album’s sequencing so easily ensures its listeners’ maintained engagement throughout the record.  Its energy never goes too far one way or another at any point throughout.  Rather it is just right from start to finish.  Keeping that in mind, it should be obvious by now why the album’s sequencing is just as important to its presentation as its musical arrangements and lyrical content.  The whole of those three elements together makes Sleeping Lions a work that continues Otherwise’s previous successes and is, again, deserving of a spot on any critic’s list of the year’s top new hard rock albums.

Otherwise’s latest full-length studio album Sleeping Lions continues the success of the band’s previous efforts in so many ways.  From musical arrangements that clearly show the band’s influences and reach to lyrical content that is just as varied to sequencing that maintains the album’s energy from one end to the other, there is plenty to the positive to say about this new effort from Otherwise; so much so that it makes its deserving of a spot in any critic’s list of the year’s top new hard rock albums.  It will be released Sept. 22 in stores and online and will be available at the band’s upcoming live fall dates with Red, 10 Years and Pop Evil.  More information on Sleeping Lions is available online with all of the band’s latest tour updates, news and more at:

Paramount’s Ninja Turtles Reboot Proves To Be One Of 2014’s Worst New Movies

Paramount Pictures’ updated take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is one of the worst new movies of 2014. There is no way to sugarcoat it. Simply put, it is one more example of why Hollywood’s (and audiences’) seemingly insatiable appetite for prequels, sequels, and remakes can only mean a bleak future for the industry’s “Power Five” studios. The central reason for the failure of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is its writing. While the movie’s writers and the studio did back down on the original idea for the Turtles’ origin story, the story incorporated into the story proves to be just as bad. There is also the issue of the plot. While it can be said that the movie’s plot is not necessarily as cheesy as some of the plot lines from the animated series, there is still something about this movie’s plot that makes it unbearable. And dangling the proverbial carrot in front of old school audiences in the form of references to the original animated series (and movie) hurts the movie even more in terms of the movie’s writing. It’s one more example of why having multiple people working on a single script serves only to hurt said script. This has been proven time and again in a number of works before this one. TMNT is just the latest. Just as noteworthy is the acting. Credit should e given where credit is due. The actors behind the turtles are deserving of their due respect. However, the acting on the part of lead Meghan Fox and the movie’s supporting cast falls flat. Even actor Will Arnett comes up short as April’s photog Vernon Fenwick. He had the look. And he did make a valiant effort at his portrayal. But it still came up short in the end. Those issues with the cast’s acting coupled with the issues raised in the movie’s script hurt TMNT in a major way. They still are not all that hurt the movie. Last but hardly least of all that goes against the movie is its collective look and production values. Michael Bay wasn’t at the helm of TMNT. But in watching the movie, one may as well say that he was. That is because the movie’s look and its production values are quite similar to the much maligned Transformers franchise that he previously helmed. It is the final nail in the movie’s coffin, sealing the movie’s fate and proving once more why this movie is one of the worst of 2014.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was and is one of the best movies to leap from the pages of comic books. That is the original live action movie that debuted in 1990. This year’s new update on that modern classic is the polar opposite of that incarnation. It’s painfully obvious from start to finish, too beginning with the movie’s overall writing. The movie’s plot by itself does plenty to hurt the movie. And it all begins with the Turtles’ much mailgned origin story. Those that followed this movie from the days even before its pre-production started will recall that the origin story was going to have Leo, Raph, Don, and Mikey come in as aliens from another planet. Thankfully that didn’t happen. However, the origin story that took its place is just as problematic. That story won’t be revealed here for the sake of those that have yet to watch the movie. But it directly involves April O’Neil. And to a point, it takes a page from Sony’s latest incarnation of Spiderman. April’s revelation at her link to the Turtles’ origin story is cheesy enough. But the acting on the part of actress Megan Fox, who plays April, only serves to make that revelation even more unbelievable. The acting on the part of the cast will be discussed in more depth at a later point. For now, the focus will remain on the movie’s writing.

The origin story crafted for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is but one part of the writing that hurts this big screen reboot bust. The movie’s very plot plays its own role in the movie’s failure. The movie’s plot sees Shredder and the Foot Clan–which is made more into a pseudo militia group here instead of the old school, evil ninja group from the original movie and animated series–trying to spread a virus through New York City. In turn, they and Eric Sacks (William Fitchner) can use the mutagen that created the Turtles for their own financial gain. Yes, it’s true. In defense of this plot, those that are familiar with the original animated series, there was an episode in which Shreddder sent up a satellite-like device the changed the weather around the world as a means for him and Krang to take over the world. So keeeping that in consideration it isn’t too cheesy of a plot. There’s still something about it in the script’s writing though, that makes it not entirely believable. Speaking of the comparison between this incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the original animated series (and the franchise’s original movie), that is yet another issue in the writing that hurts this movie.

The issues raised through the origin story and plot incorporated into Paramount’s new take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles both make the movie’s writing rather problematic in their own way. One can’t ignore the fact that Applebaum, Nemec and Daugherty did try to please the fans of the franchise’s original animated series and 1990 movie with constant throwback references to both. They even made sure to include the skateboards used in both properties. The issue at hand with making such references is that through the script’s previously noted problems, adding in those references essentially becomes a slap in the face to the fans that grew up with those originals. It’s the same as dangling the carrot in front of a donkey (or rabbit) only to have it pulled away for lack of better wording. Simply put, it is disrespectful to said audiences.

The writing behind the script for Paramount’s new incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a big part of what has made this movie one of the worst of this year’s new releases. While the writing proves to be quite problematic, it is only the beginning of the movie’s problems. The work of the movie’s cast is just as problematic. Actress Megan Fox plays April O’Neil in this version of TMNT. Her reaction at discovering her role in the origin of the Turtles is awful. It is so over the top and hammy that one can only shake one’s hand. While Will Arnett deserves at least some credit for trying to properly portray Vernon Fenwick, even he comes up short. He is hit and miss at best. To the cast’s credit, the men behind the mean green machine–Johnny Knoxville (Bad Grampa, Men in Black 2, Jackass), Pete Ploszek (Parks & Rec, Shameless), Jeremy Howard (Men in Black 2, Galaxy Quest, How The Grinch Stole Christmas), Noel Fisher (Final Destination 2, Red, Battle Los Angeles), and Alan Ritchson (Fired Up, Blue Mountain State, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) are to be commended for their work. They did quite the job of establishing the attitude and comic element for which the Turtles have been known for decades in their protrayals. Sadly the same can’t be said for the duo of Tony Shahoub (Monk, Wings, Men in Black 1 – 3) and Danny Woodburn (Mirror Mirror, Employee of the Month, Death to Smoochy). The duo partnered to bring Splinter to life. Whether it is their own work (or lack thereof) or because of how Splinter was written into the story, their portrayals did little to make Splinter really stand out at any one point in the story. So simply put, the only positives that can be pointed out in terms of the acting in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the acting of the men that brought Leo, Don, Raph and Mikey to life. other than that, not much positive can be said of the rest of the cast’s work. It’s yet another example of why Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comes up far short of its potential and proves in the end to be one of this year’s worst new releases.

Last but hardly least of note that damaged TMNT is the collective look and production values incorporated into the movie. Michael Bay did not helm this reboot of the classic franchise. But even as a producer, his influence is blatantly obvious throughout the movie. The fast-paced shots, the giant explosions, and of course Shredder’s Transformers-esque look show just how much influence he obviously had in this movie. The only positive to it all is April’s look. The use of a yellow jacket in place of a cheesy full body jumpsuit is the only fully acceptable update to the whole thing. Other than that one positive, one might as well just say that this was another Michael Bay film despite the fact that he was only a producer instead of director. And that considered along with all of the movie’s other negatives is the final nail in the movie’s coffin. One can only hope that whenever the already-in-the-works sequel debuts, it will make up for everything that this movie got wrong. Regardless, this reboot will remain among the worst new major motion pictures of 2014.

MPI, IFC Announce Details For New Paranormal Thriller

Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, Signs, Rango) returns this Winter with her latest film.  She stars in IFC Midnight’s new horror story, Haunter in which she plays the part of a spirit of a girl named Lisa.  The film co-stars veteran actor and director Stephen McHattie (300, Watchmen, The Fountain) Eleanor Zichy (Skins), Peter Outerbridge (Silent Hill: Revelation), Michelle Nolden (RED) and David Hewlett (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).

In this new “reverse ghost story”, Breslin plays the spirit of a teen girl named Lisa whose family was killed by a mysterious figure in 1986.  Now over three decades after Lisa and her family were killed, Lisa must convince her family that they are no longer among the living.  Making things even more interesting, a new family has moved into the house that was once home to Lisa and her family.  Now this new family faces the same danger that led to the death of Lisa and her family.  So Lisa must do whatever she can to protect the new family living in the house.  Directed by Vincenzo Natali (Splice, The ABCs of Death 2, Cube)  and co-written by Brian King and Matthew Brian King, this movie is sure to impress fans of movies the likes of: The Lovely Bones, The Others, and Insidious).

Otherwise Join “Self-Inflicted” Tour, Release New Lyric Video

Las Vegas based hard rock band Otherwise is on the road again.  The band has joined up with fellow supporting acts Red and We As Human on Filter’s “Self-Inflicted Tour.”  Since its release in 2012, Otherwise has seen its new album, True Love Never Dies, sell more than 50,000 copies since its release in May 2012.  ‘Soldiers’, the lead single from the album has sold more than 100,000 digital downloads.  And the band’s videos have received a total of more than 2.4 million views on YouTube.  That number is sure to be even high with the release of the lyric video for the band’s new single, ‘Die For You.’  The video can be viewed online now at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0_91w3P0NE.  The song about devotion in the face of betrayal is the third single from True Love Never Dies.

Performance Times Released For Annual Festival

Organizers of the annual “Welcome To Rockville” Festival presented by Monster Energy have released more information on this year’s festival.  2013 is the festival’s third year being held.  Performance times for bands on each stage have officially been released.  The “Monster Energy Main Stage East” opens with a performance by Pop Evil at 12:40pm.  Pop Evil will be followed by All That Remains, Halestorm, Papa Roach, Stone Sour, and headliners Alice in Chains.  Alice in Chains takes the “Monster Energy Main Stage East” at 9:45pm.  The “Monster Energy Main Stage West” is just one of the many stages from which audiences have to choose during the festival.  A full listing of bands and performance times is available below.

Along with the listed ticket prices, “no service fee tickets” are available at specific Metro PCS locations.  More information on this is available online at http://www.welcometorockvillefestival.com/tickets.html.  A limited number of VIP tickets and hotel packages are still available.  They can be purchased online at http://www.WelcomeToRockvilleFestival.com.  VIP tickets include entrance to all concerts through a VIP entrance, access to VIP lounge featuring dedicated bar, beverage and food service, viewing of the Monster Main Stage (both seated and standing areas), a seated area with shade for dining, private bathrooms and laminated VIP guest pass.
