List of Films and Synopses
Available May 1, 2020
South of the Border (1939)
On the eve of World War II, Federal agents Gene Autry and Smiley Burnette are sent South of the Border to help foil the plans of foreign spies attempting to gain control of Mexican oil fields. Full of action, humor and music, this 1939 release introduced both the title song and teen performer Mary Lee to movie audiences.
Gaucho Serenade (1940)
A case of mistaken identity sends Gene and Frog (Smiley Burnette), two down-and-out ex-rodeo stars, on a rip-roaring, cross-country trek as they help a little boy evade the gangsters responsible for the false imprisonment of his father. This “road picture,” originally released in 1940, features Duncan Renaldo, TV’s popular Cisco Kid, and counts “A Song at Sunset” among its classic tunes.
Melody Ranch (1940)
Lawlessness runs rampant in Gene’s hometown of Torpedo until the movie and radio cowboy returns as Honorary Sheriff for a Frontier Days celebration and cleans up the town. Showcasing classics like “We Never Dream the Same Dream Twice” and its title song, and featuring Jimmy Durante and Ann Miller, this musical was Gene’s biggest theatrical production when it was released November 15, 1940. Melody Ranch was selected by the Library of Congress for the National Film Registry in 2002.
The Strawberry Roan (1948)
In Gene Autry’s first color picture, Champion stars in the title role as a wild stallion who becomes a legend of the West. More exciting than any manhunt is the furious pursuit of an outlaw stallion, branded a killer, and the two-fisted cowboy who fights off a gun-crazed posse to win justice for the noble animal. Filmed in vibrantly hued Cinecolor against the beauty of Arizona landscapes, The Strawberry Roan combines thrill-filled action with a tender story of loyalty and includes five great Western songs, including the title song and “The Angel Song.”
Blue Canadian Rockies (1952)
Gene Autry and Champion crash through a maze of murder and mayhem on a dude ranch deep in the heart of the tall timber country. Montana rancher Cyrus Higbee sends Gene, his foreman, to Canada to stop the marriage of his daughter Sandra to Todd Markley, whom he suspects is a fortune hunter. Gene soon discovers that Sandra has turned the place into a dude ranch with entertainers Carolina Cotton and the Cass County Boys. When a mountie is murdered and lumberjacks threaten to take over, Gene and Pat Buttram must find the real murderer and bring peace to the Blue Canadian Rockies. Features the title song and the humorous tune “Mama Don’t Like Music.”
Available June 1, 2020
Public Cowboy No. 1 (1937)
Gene Autry’s tried and true crime fighting methods are put to the test when cattle rustlers employ modern technology – including refrigerated trucks, planes and two-way radios – in Public Cowboy No. 1. Things get worse when the local newspaper gal’s scathing editorials bash Gene’s old-fashioned methods and demand the locals call in “progressive” big city detectives. It’s up to Gene and his horse Champion, along with pal Frog Millhouse, to prove that the Western straight-shooting methods of dealing with crime still hold true! Features the classic tune “The West Ain’t What It Used to Be.”
In Old Monterey (1939)
Sergeant Gene Autry, formerly a rancher, pretends to quit the Army to persuade stubborn farmers to sell their land for a military proving ground. Gene soon discovers that unscrupulous mine owners are keeping the ranchers stirred up in hopes that the government will grow weary of the dealings and pay a higher price for their land. Smiley Burnette and June Storey join Gene in this wartime Western. Features the classic song “Tumbling Tumbleweeds.”
Rovin’ Tumbleweeds (1939)
Rancher Autry takes a job singing on the radio to aid farmers and ranchers whose lands were destroyed by raging floods. Blaming crooked politicians, he goes to Washington and tries to put through a flood control bill and finds he has a lot to learn. In this classic release, Gene introduces his immortal theme song,“Back in the Saddle Again,” which has gone on to become a piece of American history.
Ridin’ On A Rainbow (1941)
Assisting in the search for murderous bank robbers, rancher Gene Autry goes undercover as a showboat entertainer to capture the crooks and recover the money. Key to their investigation is the young singer Patsy, played by Mary Lee. Action-packed from ship to shore, the film’s showstopping musical numbers include Gene’s performance of “Be Honest with Me,” nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Song of 1941.
Sioux City Sue (1946)
Gene trades in his wings for a pair of spurs in his first movie after returning from World War II. To get his ranch out of dire financial straits, Gene reluctantly goes to Hollywood to make a movie. But his real troubles begin on his return when everyone finds out he’s the voice of Ding Dong the animated singing donkey, and his nemesis tries to drive him to ruin. Released November 21, 1946, this classic features Sterling Holloway and the hit “Oklahoma Hills.”

Two titans of the golf world are set to go toe-to-toe, and WarnerMedia and Turner Sports have secured worldwide media rights to the one-on-one golf greats.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will face off in a champions cup of sorts on November 23 at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The two-man tournament, dubbed “The Match” will be hosted by MGM Resorts International.

“The Match” will be broadcast exclusively via Turner’s B/R Live, Turner Sports’ new premium live sports streaming service, AT&T’s DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse and other on-demand platforms with the newly secured media rights. B/R Live can be accessed by downloading the B/R Live app via iTunes, Google Play, the Roku platform and Amazon Fire TV.

As an additional bonus, Bleacher Report’s House of Highlights will present in-depth highlights and behind-the-scenes content in connection to “The Match.”

Turner International will carry coverage of “The Match” overseas. If all of that is not enough for fans, the media rights deal will allow TNT to carry select content from “The Match” in the weeks following the landmark showdown.

To top everything off, HBO Sports’ 18-time Emmy Award-winning 24/7 will offer its own coverage leading up to “The Match.”

David Levy, President of Turner, discussed the new media rights deal in a recent interview, saying that “The Match” was a positive way to exhibit WarnerMedia’s broadcast capabilities.

“The iconic Tiger Woods and five-time Major Champion Phil Mickelson are generational talents who have transcended the game of golf and their rivalry continues to be one of the most compelling in sports,” Levy said.  “This one-of-a-kind, winner-take-all matchup provides a great opportunity to show fans the benefits of AT&T and WarnerMedia coming together.  For the first time since AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner (now WarnerMedia), Turner, DIRECTV and HBO will present a multi-faceted presentation of the live event and accompanying content across a vast array of platforms.”

Turner Sports will produce all of the event’s live coverage while also serving as its exclusive sales and sponsorship partner.  Turner Sports and its Turner Ignite Sports will work together with their marketing partners to highlight their brands.

Spring is one of the greatest times of the year for sports fans. The NHL and NBA are both headed into their respective playoffs. MLB is just getting started. The auto racing world is in high gear. And in the world of football, many universities are planning their annual spring football scrimmages ahead of the annual NFL draft. It also means one other thing for sports fans. It means the annual announcement by ESPN of the network’s pre-season football coverage. And make that announcement is exactly what the worldwide leader in sports did Thursday.

ESPN announced Thursday that it has two games on tap for its 2015 Monday Night Football schedule. The first of those games is a matchup of the Browns and Bills on Thursday, August 20th in Cleveland. It will be the first chance for new Bills coach and former Jets coach Rex Ryan to put his team, which now features All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy, on display. On the other side of the ball, it is believed that Johnny Manziel will be fighting for his career as the Browns host the Bills in the AFC matchup.

The second matchup on ESPN’s Monday Night Football pre-season schedule will see Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday, August 24th. The Bucs struggled mightily in the 2014- 2015 season and will have the #1 pick in this year’s NFL Draft as a result of those struggles.

The MNF broadcast team of Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden will have the call for both games. They will be joined once again by sideline reporter Lisa Salters. Both games are schedule for an 8pm ET start time and will be preceded by an hour-long edition of ESPN’s weekly NFL pre-game show Monday Night Countdown. ESPN’s Spanish-speaking audiences will be able to catch both games on television on ESPN Deportes, ESPN’s 24-hour Spanish-language domestic sports network. ESPN Deportes will also have coverage of every regular season MNF broadcast.

Along with coverage on television via ESPN and ESPN Deportes, every MNF broadcast can also be seen online through a number of outlets including: Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One via WatchESPN. ESPN, AFL Announce Details Of New Broadcast Deal

Courtesy: ESPN

Courtesy: ESPN

There’s good news for fans of the Arena Football League.  ESPN and the AFL have announced that they have reached a deal that would bring a handful of games to the Worldwide Leader in Sports.    The multi-year agreement gives ESPN broadcast rights to more than ten games on the league’s schedule.  That includes many regular and post season games, and the league’s annual championship, the Arena Bowl.  Terms of the deal also mean that seventy-five games or more will be available for viewing online via ESPN3.  Fans will also be able to go to the official AFL website, http://www.ArenaFootball.com to see games on ESPN’s video player.

The new deal between ESPN and the AFL is not the first between the two organizations.  ESPN carried the AFL’s first ever Arena Bowl in 1987.  It carried the league’s regular and post season games from 1995- 1999, playoff games from 2000 – 2002, and playoff games from 2007 – 2008.  ABC, which is part of the ESPN family of networks also covered the AFL.  It broadcasted the Arena Bowl from 1998 – 2002.  Matthew Volk, ESPN’s director of Programming and Acquisitions, expressed his respect for the rich history between ESPN and the AFL as he commented on the announcement.  He tied that in to the network’s dedication to football coverage throughout the year stating, “ESPN has a long history of working with the Arena Football League and this new agreement is a great opportunity to showcase the AFL as part of our year-round commitment to football.”

Arena Football League Commissioner Jerry B. Kurz also shared his thoughts on the partnership between the AFL and ESPN.  He was optimistic about the league’s future in discussing the deal.  Speaking to reporters, Kurz said, “The AFL’s return to ESPN is the latest example of the strides our sport has made in recent years.”  He went on to say, “Having the ArenaBowl on the ESPN family of networks for years to come puts our Championship game alongside some of the most prominent events in television.”

AFL fans that get their video and internet from affiliated providers will have access to ESPN3 online at WatchESPN via mobile devices through the WatchESPN app.  Subscribers can also stream games on TV through ESPN on Xbox Live with a Gold membership.  Games will also be available to stream for Apple TV customers and those with Roku.  ESPN’s AFL broadcasts will begin with the league’s 2014 season.  A full schedule for the 2014 season will be announced at a later date.  More information on the deal and ESPN’s full upcoming AFL coverage will be available online at http://espn.go.com/afl/.  To keep up with the latest sports and entertainment news and reviews, go online to http://www.facebook.com/philspicks and “Like” it.  Fans can always keep up with the latest sports and entertainment news and reviews in the Phil’s Picks blog at https://philspicks.wordpress.com.
