ELP Double Disc CD Set Is A Solid Final Entry For Band’s ’97 Montreux Show

Nearly nine years ago, Eagle Rock Entertainment struck a deal with Montreux Sounds that since that time has led to the release of innumerable concerts from the famed festival’s decades-long history.  That number includes performances from acts across the musical spectrum and years.  One of the earliest of those releases came on November 16th, 2004 in the form of Emerson, Lake & Palmers (ELP as the band is also known) performance at the 1997 Montreux Jazz Festival.  It was released on DVD.  Six years after its release, the concert was re-issued on Blu-ray by Eagle Rock Entertainment.  Now almost eleven years after the release of that first DVD, Eagle Rock Entertainment has finally finished it off with the release of the concert in question on a double-disc CD set.  The very fact that the concert has finally been released in an audio-only presentation is the central reason that it proves to be one that any ELP fan will appreciate.  That will be discussed at more length shortly.  The show’s set list is another reason that ELP fans everywhere will appreciate this new release/re-issue.  It features some of the band’s biggest hits to date over the course of thirteen tracks and roughly hour and a half run time.  Last but hardly least of note to this recording’s positives is its liner notes.  The recording’s liner notes were penned by the members of the band themselves versus by an outsider.  This adds a certain extra enjoyment to the recording as it gives the band members’ own thoughts as opposed to personal thoughts and suppositions from any outside sources.  That final element set against the show’s set list (and the band’s performance by connection), and the recording’s platform makes it one welcome piece for any ELP fan’s collection regardless of whether or not he or she already owns the performance in either of its previous releases.  All three elements together also show once again why Eagle Rock Entertainment remains today the leading name in live recordings.

Earlier this month, Eagle Rock Entertainment released ELP’s classic 1997 performance at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival.  The performance, released on a double-disc CD platform, marks the third time that performance has seen the light of day.  It was originally released on DVD almost eleven years ago by Eagle Rock Entertainment.  Its second release, roughly five years ago, was on Blu-ray also via Eagle Rock Entertainment.  Now, with its release earlier this month on 2 CD set Eagle Rock Entertainment it would seem that Eagle Rock has finally completed releasing the concert on each of its platforms.  To the untrained eye (and ear) this is not very significant.  However the reality is far different.  Ever since Eagle Rock and Montreux Sounds first partnered to release the innumerable performances from the famed festival Eagle Rock has gone on to make a habit of releasing each recording on its multiple formats at once instead of making audiences wait.  That is a big change in comparison to the company’s earliest recordings, this recording included.  While it likely is not the last of the companies’ earlier recordings that have needed to be finished off, it is nice to know that both companies have strived to keep from making audiences wait since then.  It’s just one way in which this new release/re-issue shows itself to be such a welcome recording for ELP’s fans and one more example of why Eagle Rock Entertainment remains today the leading name in live recordings.  The show’s set list and the band’s performance of said set list is just as important to its overall enjoyment and success as its audio-only presentation.

The set list featured in this presentation of ELP’s ’97 Montreux show and the band’s performance thereof are just as important to the presentation’s enjoyment and success as its presentation.  The central reason for this is that the set list is the same as in the concert’s previous pair of releases going all the way back to its original DVD release in 2004.  This is so important because despite what some might believe there are some companies out there that will and do present the same concert with set lists that vary from one platform to the other.  It’s sad but true.  The variances commonly appear in the set lists’ orders.  In other cases, songs have in fact been known to be deleted depending on the platform and recording.  Luckily that hasn’t happened here nor has the set list’s order been altered.  The band’s performance of the show’s songs is just as important as the set list itself.  From beginning to end of the show’s roughly ninety-minute run time the band gives its all, keeping listeners engaged and entertained.  This is the case even in the show’s longer pieces, one of which runs just short of the twenty-minute mark.  The band keeps listeners so entertained that they will not even realize that so much time has passed by the show’s end.  It is yet another reason that this latest release of ELP’s classic Montreux show proves to be as enjoyable as the concert’s previous releases.  In simpler terms, it proves even more through its set list and the band’s performance of said set list to be one more welcome piece for any ELP fan.

ELP’s newly re-issued ’97 Montreux show proves through its very presentation on double-disc DC set to be a welcome addition to any ELP fan’s personal collection.  This is regardless of whether or not fans already own the concert in its previous DVD and Blu-ray presentations.  The fact that the set list from the concert’s original presentation has been held in tact here makes it all the more impressive.  The band’s performance of said songs adds a whole extra level of enjoyment to this recording for ELP’s fans.  While all of the recording’s noted elements do plenty to make it enjoyable for ELP fans of all ages, they are not the only factors that make it such a worthwhile addition to any ELP fan’s collection.  The liner notes included in the recording’s companion booklet add even more reason for the band’s fans.  That is because all three of the band’s members share their own thoughts on the group’s performance at the festival as well as on its founder Claud Nobs and the town of Montreux.  The trio’s sentiments in regards to Nobs are deeply moving in their respect for him.  All three men also paint a picture of the town of Montreux as something right out of a classical work of art.  All of the descriptions are of a town that during most of the year is a sleepy little hollow that is a dream come true for anyone wanting an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.  But during the annual festival time things really ramp up.  It’s such an interesting juxtaposition to see in one’s own mind.  On a separate but related note, writer Michael Heatley notes ahead of the band members’ own thoughts a brief but concise history of the band’s rise to fame and eventual inclusion at the Montreux Festival.  Audiences that might not be so familiar with the band’s history will be interested to learn that ELP actually got its start at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.  Ironically enough, Eagle Rock Entertainment just recently released what would be the last major concert by Rory Gallagher and his band mates in Taste at that same festival on Blu-ray and DVD.  Even more interesting is that where ELP got its start would be the last major mark for one Jimi Hendrix before his untimely death only weeks later.  It’s an interesting six degrees of separation to consider that makes this addition to the recording’s liner notes that much more important to the whole of its presentation.  One can’t help but stop in considering this to think for a moment:  the very festival and year where ELP got its start (according to Heatley) is the same festival that essentially was the last blast for two other acts’ careers.  Together with the concert’s presentation here in a double-disc CD platform and the show’s set alongside the band’s performance of said set, the whole of these elements completes the recording and shows once and for all why any ELP fan will want to have this potentially final installment from the band’s ’97 Montreux show in his or her own home music library.

ELP’s newly released double-disc CD presentation of its performance at the 1997 Montreux Jazz Festival is more than likely the final installment of said performance from the legendary progressive rock band.  That is because the concert has already been released both on DVD and Blu-ray previously in separate years.  That being the case, the CD set’s release this summer in itself is reason enough for the band’s fans to add it to their own home music libraries.  This applies both to those with the concert’s previous releases and those without.  The fact that the set list was kept intact in its presentation makes the recording even more enjoyable. Add in an equally solid performance from the band from start to finish and some rather insightful liner notes in the recording’s companion booklet and ELP fans get one more presentation of its 1997 Montreux show that each will agree is a completely welcome addition to their own personal music library. Fans will be happy to know considering all of this that Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Live at Montreux 1997 is available no in stores and online in its new double-disc CD presentation. Taste: Live At The Isle Of Wight Is A Shining Diamond In The Rough

Eagle Rock Entertainment is the leading name in live recordings. That is already a well-known fact. That is not just because of the extensive list of acts whose recordings it has released over the years but also because of the quality of said recordings. While that list of recordings is extensive, most of the recordings in question released over the years have been from the biggest names in the music industry. They have not necessarily featured lesser known acts. But earlier this month Eagle Rock changed that when it dug up a hidden gem in the form of Taste: What’s Going On—Live at the Isle of Wight. Taste has never been among music’s (or more specifically rock’s) elite. But that takes nothing away from the Irish trio’s music. Now thanks to the efforts of those at Eagle Rock Entertainment a whole new generation of audiences will discover the joy that is Taste in this new recording. The central element that makes Taste: What’s Going On—Live at the Isle of Wight such a wonderful new recording is its introductory history lesson on Taste. The lesson in question gives a thorough background on the band and its place in rock’s history as well as the importance of its performance at the Isle of Wight Festival. Staying on that note, the companion booklet included with the recording adds even more background on the band and festival, making the recording in whole that much more enjoyable for viewers. And that is still not all that can be noted that makes this recording so impressive. The performance at the heart of the recording translates just as well decades after it was first held as it did for audiences that were in attendance at the original show. By direct connection, the recording’s production values are just as impressive as the performance itself. They are the finishing touch to the presentation. Together with each of the previously noted elements, it shows once more why Eagle Rock Entertainment remains the leading name in live recordings and why the recording in whole is one more welcome addition to this year’s crop of live recordings.

Taste: What’s Going On—Live at the Isle of Wight is one of the most surprising and welcome additions to this year’s rich field of live recording offerings. That is especially the case being that unlike so many other live recordings released by Eagle Rock over the years, this recording comes from a decidedly unknown act. Thanks to the inclusion of an introductory history lesson on the band, fronted by famed guitarist Rory Gallagher, audiences of all ages get a good introduction to the band and its importance to the music community both in its heyday and in the modern history of the music industry. The history lesson in question even features Taste’s former drummer John Wilson and one of the band’s managers discussing the band’s history and its performance at the famed festival. Speaking of managers, there is a short discussion on the band’s financial situation leading to said manager change as well as discussions on the importance of the band in comparison to the likes of Jimi Hendrix (who just happened to also be one of the performers at the Isle of Wight festival) and other more well-known acts. Viewers will be surprised to hear the likes of U2’s The Edge and other well-known names singing the praises of Taste, discussing the band’s place in the music industry’s history and its importance in comparison to its more well-known counterparts. These and other discussions featured throughout the presentation’s introductory segment form a solid foundation for the recording and show in themselves why they are collectively an important part of the recording’s whole. They are just one part of the recording that viewers will enjoy, too regardless of viewers’ familiarity with Taste and its body of work.

The history lesson presented ahead of Taste’s performance at the Isle of Wight Festival forms a solid foundation for the whole of Taste: What’s Going On—Live at the Isle of Wight. That foundation is strengthened even more through the companion booklet included with the recording. It picks up right where the presentation’s video bio left off with even more information to set the stage (no pun intended) for the featured performance. One of the most interesting pieces of information included in the booklet is that the band was actually late to the stage because the festival, which started out as a ticketed event, became a virtual free for all as so many people showed up for the event. Just as interesting is the note about Jimi Hendrix telling an interviewer to ask Rory how it felt to be the world’s greatest guitarist because he himself didn’t know. Of course that humility was the norm for Hendrix as he was very much the standard anti-rock star persona. But that the future legend would even throw such credit in Gallagher’s direction says quite a bit about the respect that even others far more well-known than himself had for him as a musician and person. It is quite the telling statement. There is also a more specific explanation of what exactly led to the tension between the band and its manager, and their subsequent split from him. These are just a handful of examples of the importance of this recording’s companion booklet. There is far more history provided in the booklet including a more thorough history of the band’s formation and additional information about the band’s performance at the Isle of Wight not included in the primary video history lesson featured on disc courtesy of Garth Cartwright. The combination of the booklet’s history lesson and that of the disc’s video history lesson makes both elements together an all too important part of this presentation’s whole. That is especially the case considering the relative obscurity of Taste both then and now among audiences. Of course noting both historical elements is only scratching the surface of what makes this latest recording from Eagle Rock Entertainment so important. One would be remiss to ignore the recording’s central focus, the band’s performance.

The history lesson provided both on disc and on paper in Taste’s new live recording sets a solid foundation for audiences before they take in the concert at the heart of the presentation. The concert in question is just as enjoyable as the history lesson preceding the concert. While the concert is composed of only seven songs, those songs will keep any classic rock aficionado fully engaged. As Cartwright notes in the concert’s companion booklet, the trio’s performance was truly something special even for that time. From the adrenaline-fueled opener after which this recording is named to the solid blues tones of ‘Gambling Blues’ to ‘Same Old Story’ and the show’s final number ‘Catfish Blues’ the band proves with this performance that had its members not allowed their tensions to get the better of them, it might have indeed gone on to become one of rock’s elite. Alas that wasn’t to be. But thankfully audiences have this concert to remind them of the greatness that could have been. It is one more way in which this presentation shows itself to be such a surprising and welcome diamond in the rough from Eagle Rock Entertainment and why Eagle Rock Entertainment is, again, the leading name in live recordings.

The concert that lies at the heart of Taste: What’s Going On–Live at the Isle of Wight is a very important element in the enjoyment and overall success of this recording. When coupled with its dual-part history lesson, the recording in whole shows even more why it is such an outstanding new release from Eagle Rock Entertainment. For all of the value of the presentation’s noted elements none of them would be of any significance without the concert’s surprisingly impressive production values. Being that the concert was originally recorded some forty-five years ago, the footage has stood the test of time quite well. The grainy look of the footage is still there. But it obvious that it has been re-mastered. The fact that those charged with restoring the footage maintained that balance between old and new so expertly speaks volumes about their efforts. The same can be said of the recording’s audio mix. It is clear that the audio was as painstakingly handled as its footage. The result here is a performance that sounds and looks just as good today as it did almost five decades ago. Together with its two-part history lesson and the concert itself, the whole of Taste: What’s Going On–Live at the Isle of Wight proves again exactly why it is one more of this year’s best new archived live concert recordings and one more reason that Eagle Rock Entertainment remains today the leading name in live recordings.

Taste: What’s Going On–Live at the Isle of Wight is a surprising release from Eagle Rock Entertainment. That is because those familiar with the company’s history of live recordings know most of them to be from far more well-known acts. But in discovering this far lesser-known act in this concert, audiences will agree that Taste deserves far more respect today than it got so many decades ago. They will also agree in watching this recording that it serves as a solid, enjoyable introduction to Taste for said audiences. That is thanks primarily to its rich, in-depth history lesson, which serves as the recording’s foundation. The performance itself will make that introduction all the more enjoyable for viewers. Eagle Rock Entertainment To Release Taste’s Final Live Show This Fall

Eagle Rock Entertainment announced today that it will release a “delectable” new archived live concert recording from the famed rock band Taste this fall.

Eagle Rock Entertainment will release What’s Going On – Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 on Friday, September 18th. The concert recording, originally shot by Academy Award® winner Murray Lerner, was restored from its original 16mm film and even had its sound remixed for its upcoming presentation. It will be available on a number of platforms including: DVD, Blu-Ray, double-disc LP set for vinyl fans, and digital formats. The DVD wil retail for MSRP of $14.98, Blu-ray for $19.98, CD for $13.98, and double-disc vinyl LP set for $34.98.

The concert presented in What’s Going On – Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 presents the story of the famed Irish band, formed in 1966 by equally noted multi-talented musician and songwriter Rory Gallagher. The recording is especially important as it would be the last time that the band would perform together in its short time together. Before performing at the festival, Taste released only two full-length albums—its self-titled debut release in 1969 and its follow-up On The Boards (1970). Those albums are being included in a companion box set titled I’ll Remember, which will be released via Universal Music Group on August 28th. Both albums have been re-mastered and include their own bonus tracks. Also included in the box set will be previously unreleased live concert recordings from Stockholm’s Konserthuset, The BBC and Woburn Abbey Festival and demos of both the band’s previously released and un-released material.

The track listing for What’s Going On – Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 includes all of the songs featured in the concert’s original 1971 Polydor LP as well as bonus tracks for true hardcore fans of Taste. There will also be a trio of songs from the German TV series Beat Club. “Irish Tour ’74” Is An Excellent Re-Introduction To Rory Gallagher

Rory Gallagher is probably not the first name that most people would come up with when they are asked to name some of the most well-known guitarists in music’s modern history. While he may not be one of the most well-known musicians to have ever picked up a guitar, the artists with whom he recorded and performed in his short career are legendary. Muddy Waters and Jerry Lee Lewis were just a couple of acts that he recorded with during his career. He also performed and recorded with former members of the famed Yardbirds after that band’s initial disbanding. And that is just a small sampling of his achievements from his career. Now thanks to Eagle Rock Entertainment, a whole new generation of rock purists is being introduced to Gallagher’s talents thanks to the recent release of his Irish Tour ’74 archived live recording. The archived concert was released in a special deluxe 2-CD edition on October 21st. And it goes without saying that there is a lot to like about this recording especially for those that might not be so familiar with Gallagher and his body of work. The most obvious thing to like about the recording is the recording’s set list. The special double-disc CD set focuses primarily on Gallagher’s shows from Cork, Ireland on January 5th, 1974. It is a great piece of music history especially for those that aren’t so familiar with Gallagher and his body of work. The concert’s audio mix in this presentation is another aspect that audiences will like. Four decades have passed since the shows from Gallagher’s ’74 tour. And the audio has stood the test of time quite well, as audiences will note here. Rounding out the package is its companion booklet. The companion booklet comes with never before published pictures and new liner notes. Each factor noted here makes Irish Tour ’74 enjoyable in its own right. Together, they make this recording a welcome and important piece of music history.

Irish-born blues-rock guitarist Rory Gallagher was one of the most well-kept secrets in the music industry during the course of his short life. He recorded roughly twelve studio albums over the course of his career. Those albums have sold well over thirty million copies worldwide. For such impressive numbers, Gallagher never gained the international super stardom of his British and American counterparts at the time. But as audiences will hear in the set list contained on Eagle Rock’s double-disc release Irish Tour ’74 Gallagher was and still is deserving of far more credit and acclaim than he has ever received. The blues rock sounds presented in the show’s set list echo hints of Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers Band, The Doobie Brothers, and so many other great names within rock’s blues-based sub-genre. One could even argue that there are hints of Jimi Hendrix in his playing. That is evident right off the top in his performance of ‘Messin’ With The Kid.’ Audiences can hear both Hendrix and Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page in this song. Lou Martin’s frantic work on the keyboards and Rod De’ath’s drumming set against Gallagher’s guitar playing make this song an explosive opener and an equally explosive first impression for those that are hearing Gallagher’s music for the first time. Audiences will also appreciate the comparison to George Thorogood (and to a lesser extent Lynyrd Skynrd) that can be made in ‘Hands Off.’ The song’s straight forward 4/4 blues-rock vibe will have any listener jamming out regardless of their familiarity with Gallagher’s music. The mini-tribute to the Andrews Sisters in the opening of ‘Who’s That Coming’ is by itself a great touch. The song’s simple stylistic comparison to The Allman Brothers Band and even The Doors makes the song even more enjoyable for audiences. Yes, one could even make a comparison between Gallagher and The Doors. That says quite a bit about Gallagher’s talents. Listening to the rest of the songs that make up this two-disc recording, audiences will find other comparisons. In making such comparisons, it reveals even more Gallagher’s level of talent. One can only hope that the end result will be a resurgence in the popularity of his music.

The set list that makes up Irish Tour ’74 presents Gallagher as a truly talented musician. The same can be said of his band mates in these concerts. It makes one wonder why he never gained the level of fame as his counterparts despite his albums selling some thirty million copies worldwide. Perhaps this recording will help push him to that stratosphere on which his counterparts in question rest to this day. The set list itself more than makes this recording a great re-introduction to Gallagher’s works. Without a solid audio mix the recording would be nothing. Luckily though, the tapes on which these shows were originally recorded have stood the test of time quite well. The audio levels are expertly balanced in their re-mastering. The end result there is that no one part overpowers the other at any one point throughout the course of the recording. Yet again, it is proof of why Eagle Rock Entertainment remains to this day the leader in live recordings. Whether the recording be from a world renowned superstar or someone lesser known such as Gallagher, Eagle Rock Entertainment releases only the best possible recordings. It does not release recordings with inferior production values. Such expertly handled production values will make taking in Gallagher’s music all the more enjoyable and play even more of a role in re-igniting his fame.

The production values of Irish Tour ’74 and the recording’s set list are both key to the overall success of this latest archived concert. The two elements together make this recording an excellent way to re-introduce Rory Gallagher to the world. The recording is rounded out with the inclusion of a companion booklet loaded with extras. The companion booklet boasts sixteen pages of previously unpublished photos from Gallagher’s Irish tour and new liner notes outlining the tour’s highlights. Among the most interesting of the liner notes are notes concerning his performance in the worn torn region of Belfast. There are notes about his impact on that region and his influence as a musician overall during his career and much more included in the liner notes. It is one more important piece of the whole that makes Irish Tour ’74 such a wonderful re-introduction for Gallagher to the world. Together with the show’s set list and its exception production values, it becomes all the more valuable for any rock and roll purist and fan of classic rock. It becomes a recording that regardless of one’s familiarity with Gallagher and his body of work, any rock purist will enjoy. It could even lead said purists to become new fans or new fans again of Rory Gallagher.
