Punk Rock Factory’s New Covers Set Is The New “Master” Of This Year’s Field Of New Covers Compilations

Art Courtesy: @whoisrebeccaj

This year has seen so many covers collections released.  From rock to pop to jazz, it seems every genre has seen any number of covers records, to the point that it has made the whole field somewhat trite.  Yes, there are some covers sets that standout, but for the most part, the field has really become one big mass once again.  Enter Punk Rock Factory’s forthcoming record, Masters of the Uniwurst.  The 22-song record is the most standout of this year’s new covers records.  That is due in large part to its featured songs.  They will be discussed shortly.  The band’s performances of the featured songs also plays into the record’s presentation and will be addressed a little later.  Staying on that note, the songs’ sequencing plays its own important part to the collection’s presentation and will be discussed a little later.  Each item noted is important in its own way to the whole of this 34-minute record.  All things considered, they make the record the best of this year’s new covers records so far.

Punk Rock Factory’s forthcoming record, Masters of the Uniwurst is unquestionably the best of this year’s covers sets so far.  That is due in no small part to its featured songs.  The songs in question are punk rock takes of classic kids’ TV shows from the 80s and 90s.  Given, it is hardly the first time that any act has taken on such songs, but it’s also an approach that is not overly taken for covers records.  Powerglove is well-known for doing such.  There are also compilations of theme songs from kids’ shows covered out there, but again, they are compilations.  Keeping that in mind, that the band would take this avenue is worthy of applause in itself.

Adding to the reason for applause is the mix of theme songs that the band opted to take on in this collection.  The band did not just take the easy route and cover theme songs that others have taken on.  Yes, the band took on the theme songs from the likes of The Flintstones and Pokemon and even Scooby Doo, Where Are You?, but it also took on theme songs from other shows, such as Goof Troop, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and even M.A.S.K., as well as Animaniacs, Denver The Last Dinosaur, and Round The Twist.  Simply put, the band chose a relatively solid mix of familiar shows and theme songs, and some equally well-known shows whose theme songs have been less covered.  That balance continues to show the importance of the record’s featured songs.  It shows that the band put a lot of thought into the record’s body.  It shows the band members wanted to make sure if from only this element, audiences became engaged and entertained.  Keeping all of this in mind, the record’s songs are just a portion of what makes this record stand out.  The band’s performances add their own layer of enjoyment to the record.

The band’s performance of each song is important to the record’s presentation because of the updated touch it gives to each classic theme song.  Case in point is the band’s take on the theme song from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon.  The band stays true to the source material here, yet somehow, with its punk influence here, the song actually proves even better than the original.  Whether that is because of the guitars, the vocals, the drums, or everything together, the fact of the matter is that this song, which even boasts some classic metal influence, really gives the song a welcome update.  Longtime devotees of the series (and the TMNT franchise) will easily find this a welcome take on the song.  On yet another note, the band’s take on the Arthur theme song (yes, the band even takes on the theme song from Arthur, which was originally updated by a well-known member of the Marley family)shows the importance of the band’s performance in its own way.  Yes, it is another punk rock opus, but the band still stays true to the original, even including the slightest hint of reggae along with the collective chorus to make this such a unique and surprisingly enjoyable take on another classic theme song.  And then there is the band’s take of the Saved By The Bell theme song.  The original song had a little bit of a rockabilly vibe about it.  In the case of this performance, the band’s punk take amps up that take while, again, staying true to the source material.  It is another unique approach to a theme song that has rarely if ever been covered by other acts well-known and otherwise and considering the stylistic approach and the energy that results from the performance, shows even more why the band’s performances are so important to the record’s presentation.  Taking this into consideration along with the band’s performance of the other songs examined here and those in the rest of the record, the whole leaves no doubt as to the importance of the band’s performances.  Even with its importance, it is still not the last of the record’s notable elements.  The record’s sequencing rounds out the most important of the collection’s elements.

The sequencing is so important to the record’s presentation in part because it ensures the theme songs and shows do not get redundant.  Put in more layman’s terms, the sequencing ensures that throughout the album’s run, the songs (and shows) do not just stick to one era or another.  Thundercats, an anime show takes audiences back to the 80s.  From there, the band moves forward to the 80s with the theme song from the still very popular Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers series.  The band sticks to the 90s from there as it takes on the theme song from Arthur.  The show itself is completely different from the other two songs, and so is the theme song in terms of its original stylistic approach and sound.  The diversity in shows and theme song styles and sounds continues fluidly from there, from the easy, lighter Goof Troop theme song to the more energetic Animaniacs theme.  Again, this is in reference to the original songs.  The band’s take on them does well to honor those original takes, again.  From that point on to the record’s end, the changes continue throughout, doing their own part to keep the record engaging and entertaining.

The ordering of the content at the surface is just part of the importance of the record’s sequencing.  The sequencing also ensures the record’s energy remains high even as the song styles change.  At no point does that energy pull back.  It stays high from beginning to end, ensuring even more, audiences’ engagement and entertainment.  Taking this into consideration along with the role of the sequencing in regards to the content’s general ordering, the two items pair to show wholly why the sequencing is just as important to this record as the content and the band’s performance thereof.  All things considered, they make this record the best of the year’s new covers compilations so far.

Punk Rock Factory’s forthcoming covers set, Masters of the Uniwurst, may not be its only covers collection (it took on a number of Disney songs in its most recent record), but it is still a welcome new collection of covers from the punk outfit.  That is due in large part to its featured songs.  The songs are a collection of songs, some of which are more often covered than others and some of which are lesser handled from shows that are themselves a balance of well- and lesser-known kids shows.  That balance of content is itself reason enough to audiences to take in this record.  The band’s performances of the record’s featured songs adds its own touch to the presentation.  That is because the performances in question amp up songs that were already catchy to begin with while staying true to the source material.  The record’s sequencing rounds out the most important of its elements.  That is because it ensures the collection’s aesthetics add their own important touch to the whole.  Each item examined is important in its own way to the whole of the record.  All things considered, they make Masters of the Uniwurst the master of this year’s field of new covers compilations.  Masters of the Uniwurst is scheduled for release Friday.

‘Saved By The Bell’ Rings Loud In Phil’s Picks 2018 top 10 New DVD/BD Re-Issues List

Courtesy: Shout! FactoryNBC

Box sets and standalone DVDs and Blu-rays are always critical to examine each year when it comes to year-ender lists.  That is because they really are their own categories.  They are not the only important categories to examine, though, when developing year-ender lists.

One of the most under appreciated lists that every critic should consider is the list of the year’s top new DVD and Blu-ray re-issues.  This critic’s list is chock full of interesting titles this year, such as the Blu-ray re-issue of the classic action series MacGuyver‘s debut season, Saved By The Bell and even the classic biopic The Glenn Miller Story. Yes, this critic even included a biopic in the list, despite not exactly being a fan of the genre.

The top spot on this year’s list goes easily to none other than Saved By The BellThe Complete Series.  The original series has been released previously, however, never to the extent that it was presented in this new box set.  Add in solid pricing and extensive bonus material, and fans of the classic NBC series get a top notch set.

The second spot on this year’s list goes to the Blu-ray re-issue of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.  This so-campy-that-it’s-great modern classic is incredible in its story, acting and special effects.  The addition of its bonus material makes it an even greater investment for movie buffs.

Third Place in this year’s list of top new DVD & BD Re-Issues goes to the re-issue of MGM’s Get Shorty.  The spoof of Hollywood’s many mob movies and Hollywood insider flicks couples with enjoyable bonus content and an affordable price point for a presentation that every movie buff will enjoy.

Also featured in this year’s list are re-issues of Bill & Ted’s Bogus JourneyDragnetBill & Ted’s Excellent AdventureCity Slickers and The Wasp Woman just to name a handful of titles.  The list’s top 10 titles are the best of the year, while the five that follow are honorable mention titles.  Without any further ado, here for your consideration is Phil’s Picks 2018 Top 10 New DVD/BD re-issues.

‘SBTB: The Complete Collection’ Lives Up To Its Title And Then Some

Courtesy: Shout! FactoryNBC

NBC’s classic series Saved by the Bell is one of the most iconic children’s series from the 90s.  While the original series only ran for four seasons over four years, it remains today a favorite among audiences of all ages.  It is even in syndication on Me-TV to this day, and went on to have a short-lived after life of sorts in the form of “The College Years” and its related movies.  While all of that content has been released in one way or another over the years, they have never been collected in one full collection until now.  Thanks to the people at Shout! Factory, all of that content has finally received a complete collection release in the form of Saved By The Bell: The Complete Collection.  Released Oct. 2, the 16-disc DVD collection takes audiences from the series’ infancy in Good Morning, Miss Bliss right up through the college years and SBTB movies.  That content collection is just one of the most important of the collection’s elements to discuss.  Just as important to note as the overall content is the bonus content presented in the collection.  It will be discussed a little later.  The set’s packaging rounds out its most important elements.  Each item is important in its own way, as will be pointed out here.  All things considered, truly devoted fans of SBTB will agree that Shout! Factory’s latest SBTB collection is the best of the show’s collections to date.

Shout! Factory’s new 16-disc Saved By The Bell box set is a collection that the series’ most devoted fans will agree is the best collection to be released from the series to date.  That is due in part to the fact that it actually does contain the complete run of the original SBTB series.  That includes Saved By The Bell’s predecessor, Good Morning, Miss Bliss the four-season run of SBTB and SBTB’s follow-ups in the form of The College Years and the series’ “movies,” which officially marked the end of the original series.  This culling of the original series’ material in one place marks the first time ever that the entire original Saved By The Bell series has been placed in one setting.  For those who might want to be snarky, and make statements about the spinoff from Saved By The Bell, SBTB: The New Class, that series was its own series, which lasted for seven seasons.  Keeping that in mind, this  set is still a complete set, making it fully deserving of praise, along with those at Shout! Factory who worked to get the distribution rights to the original franchise.  Now considering all of this, true devotees of the series will agree that the set’s average price point of $46 is relatively affordable.  That is especially the case when one considers that breadth of content along with the bonus material included in the set’s recent release.  That bonus material is just as important to discuss as the primary content.

The bonus content include with the set is extensive to say the very least.  From the standard picture galleries to the featurettes and documentaries, audiences are treated to a bevy of bonuses.  The most prominent of the bonus documentaries is the brand new documentary “Past Times at Bayside High: Making Saved By The Bell.”  This roughly half hour documentary presents an in-depth discussion by the show’s creative heads about the series’ history and importance.  Even the most devout fans of SBTB might find themselves surprised to learn, for instance, that SBTB’s predecessor, Good Morning, Miss Bliss actually was meant to focus on star Hailey Mills, not her students.  On a related note, audiences will be just as interested to learn that none other than Disney (yes, Disney) played its own key part in that series leading to the creation of SBTB and in turn, the change in focus from the teachers to the students.  Staying on that note, another interesting revelation made in this documentary is that SBTB’s key tween and teen female target audience focus actually started out entirely by chance.  How that happened will be left for audiences to discover for themselves.  As if that is not enough, audiences will be even more surprised at the discussion on how the cast was chosen, and the cultural significance of said casting.  That discussion is one of the most crucial because as is pointed out, most people probably have never thought about the importance of the cultural diversity in the cast, and its influence in casting for so many of today’s children’s series (and series in general).  Between all of the noted discussions and others not directly noted here, it can be said with certainty that Past Times at Bayside High gives audiences more than enough to appreciate in considering the set’s bonus materials.  Of course it is just one of the bonus features included in the set.  The documentary focusing on the show’s music and the older, shorter featurettes featured alongside those two new bonuses add their own share of insight and entertainment for viewers.  When all of the bonus featurettes and docs are considered together, the insight and entertainment that they collectively supply viewers just as much to appreciate as the set’s primary content.  Keeping this in mind, the primary and secondary content presented in this box set make the set complete in every sense of the word.  The set’s packaging does just as much as the content to make the set complete.

The packaging of SBTB: The Complete Collection is important to note because of its own presentation, Good Morning, Miss Bliss is packaged in its own two-disc box, while SBTB is split into three separate boxes, the first two containing the series’ four primary seasons.  The third box contains the college years and SBTB movies.  On the back of each box is an episode listing complete with episode title and original air date.  That listing is complimented by a bonus companion booklet outlining the episodes along with a brief but concise summary for each episode.  There is even an explanation early in the booklet about the order of the episodes and the cast’s ages as well as an introduction outlining Good Morning, Miss Bliss’ place in the history of SBTB.  As if that is not enough, the companion booklet also outlines which episodes come with bonus feature-length audio commentary and who provides said commentary.  When all of this is considered in whole, the packaging of this set shows clearly why it is just as important to discuss in examining the set as the content.  When this is considered along with the primary and secondary content presented in the collection, the whole of that content and packaging even more so makes the box set truly complete, and honestly, one of the year’s top new family box sets.

Shout! Factory’s recently released box set Saved By The Bell: The Complete Collection is an anthology that definitely lives up to its title.  That is proven in part, as discussed here, through the primary content presented across the set.  The primary content presented is the full, true complete run of Saved By The Bell from start to end, including the series complete predecessor and the items that followed.  The secondary content (I.E. the bonus content) strengthens the foundation formed through the primary content, adding even more for audiences to appreciate.  The packaging adds its own content to appreciate in the episode listing, companion booklet and actual physical packaging.  Each of the items, as listed, is crucial in its own way to the whole of Saved By The Bell: Complete Collection.  All things considered, they make the set a collection that truly is complete in every sense of the word.  That completion makes the set one of this year’s top new family box sets.  It is available now and can be ordered online direct via Shout! Factory’s online store.  More information on this and other titles from Shout! Factory is available online now at:

Say Hey For Hey Dude: The Complete Series

Courtesy: Nickelodeon/Shout! Factory

Courtesy: Nickelodeon/Shout! Factory

It has been nearly twenty-five years since the classic live action, teen-centric series Hey Dude wrapped up its five-season run on Nickelodeon. One of a small handful of live-action series on Nickelodeon during its time on the air, it was Nickelodeon’s answer to NBC’s Saturday morning kids’ series Saved By The Bell. In 2011, Shout! Factory resurrected Hey Dude, releasing the first of the series’ five seasons on its own stand-alone box set. Shout! Factory didn’t waste any time getting the series to its now grown up fans after acquiring its distribution rights, either. From 2011 to 2013, all five seasons were released in their own stand-alone box sets. Now as a final hurrah, Shout! Factory will release all five seasons in one complete series box set on Tuesday, March 10th. It is not the first of Nickelodeon’s classic series that Shout! Factory has released in full nor will it be the last. There is still at least one more set to be released in the form of The Wild Thornberrys: The Complete Series. And hopefully that box set will make its way out before the year lets out. That’s an issue for another time. For now, the fact that all five seasons of Hey Dude have been compiled into one box set is in itself a huge positive for fans. It’s not just about ergonomics, either. There is even more to it than that. And that will be noted shortly. Also worth noting is the writing that went into the series’ sixty-five total episodes. The show’s then younger audiences could just as easily relate to the stories behind each episode as those presented in Saved By The Bell or any other teen-centric series on television at the time. This is the case even though its setting was supposed to be a dude ranch. The writers were still able to craft a whole series of stories from the show’s premiere to its finale that were just as entertaining as they were accessible to audiences. While both the show’s writing and the box set’s full collection of seasons are equally important, just as important to note is that each of the discs that make up the show’s five seasons have been specifically marked within their respective seasons. This reduces any confusion for audiences. And together with the inclusion of a complete episode list inside the box’s cover (specifically on the front and rear cover), it rounds out all of the set’s positives. By itself the separation of the seasons (and the companion episode list) within the box is one of the strongest reasons for fans to pick up this Hey Dude: The Complete Series. Together with its full complement of episodes and the writing behind said episodes, all three elements together make Hey Dude: The Complete Series a must have for any fan of this modern classic series. They also collectively make it one of the year’s best new box sets for children and families.

When it was announced four years ago that Shout! Factory would release the first of Hey Dude’s five seasons, the show’s now grown up fans were understandably rather excited. That is because Shout! Factory had already released the first season of both The Wild Thornberrys and Rocko’s Modern Life with quite the positive results. And the first season of Hey Arnold!, CatDog, and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters were all on the way, along with the first and second season of The Angry Beavers and the first season of Danny Phantom all within a matter of months. So it was obviously just one part of a virtual tidal wave of releases thanks to a deal struck between Nickelodeon and Shout! Factory. It was a deal that has since gone on to see the full series sets of almost all of those other shows see the light of day in stores and online. The only shows involved in that deal that still have yet to see full releases are The Wild Thornberrys and Hey Dude. But on Tuesday, March 10th, audiences will finally be able to strike Hey Dude from that list as it will finally see the light of day. Hey Dude: The Complete Series is just as impressive as the previous full-series box sets released by the partnership between Shout! Factory and Nickelodeon. The most obvious reason being that it is indeed the show’s full series run. All sixty-five episodes of Hey Dude are spread across ten discs in this box set. This is important for two reasons. The first reason that it is important is simply for the purpose of ergonomics. Instead of having to fill space with five separate stand-alone DVD box sets, all five seasons have been placed into one box. The one box saves space versus the five stand-alone sets. The reason that it saves space is the smart packaging of the series’ discs, which has for a long time been the standard for Shout! Factory’s multi-disc sets. The discs are placed one on the inside front of the box, another on the inside rear, and the rest on either side of a set of plastic “plates.” It saves space and protects the discs from scratching one another. On another level, the stand-alone season sets are not exactly easy to find unless fans order them online. With the upcoming release of Hey Dude: The Complete Series exclusively in Wal-Mart stores nationwide, fans won’t have to worry about hunting for this season or that one. They are all presented in the one box. As if the ergonomically sound box and the inclusion of all five seasons within the one box isn’t enough, fans are being given quite the price break with Hey Dude: The Complete Series. Each stand-alone season set prices at roughly $20 plus tax versus the approximately $30 price tag for the complete series set. It’s yet another huge positive for the set that is sure to make quite a few of the show’s fans very happy. It is hardly the last of the positives to the set, either. The writing behind the series is just as worth noting in its enjoyment and success.

The physical and financial elements of Hey Dude: The Complete Series by themselves make this new box west well worth the purchase. They aren’t the only reasons that fans of the classic Nickelodeon series will want to add the set to their DVD libraries. The work of the show’s writers makes it even more worth the purchase. Hey Dude’s writers keep their audiences fully engaged with a wide range of stories throughout the show’s five-season run. From a comical battle of the sexes early on in the series’ run to Mr. Ernst getting amnesia with comical results in the series’ final season to Danny having to make an important choice regarding his roots in Season Four’s “Do The Right Thing,” the writers showed time and again throughout Hey Dude’s five seasons that they knew how to move their audiences and make them laugh, too. They show that talent just as much when the ranch hands have to take care of a baby they think has been abandoned in “Baby” and in the comical Season Two finale “Take Me To Your Leader” in which everyone thinks that aliens have invaded the ranch. That episode is sure to have any viewer laughing with its old school comic elements. The episodes noted here are just some of the examples of why the writing behind Hey Dude makes the series’ upcoming box set so enjoyable. Every season of Hey Dude exhibits the talent of the show’s writers. And audiences will see that for themselves when they purchase Hey Dude: The Complete Series. They will see throughout the show’s five seasons just how many laughs and moving moments it offered then and still offer today. They will also see just how important the set’s physical and financial elements are to the whole package. In seeing all of that, audiences will agree even more so why Hey Dude: The Complete Series is indeed one of this year’s best new box sets for children and families.

The physical and financial elements of Hey Dude: The Complete Series coupled with the work of the show’s writers makes fully evident why every fan of Hey Dude should add the series’ full series set to their personal libraries. They show, too why Hey Dude: The Complete Series is one of this year’s best new box sets for children and families. For all of the value and importance of those elements, there is still one more element worth noting that makes this box set such a joy for audiences. That last element of this set that makes it so enjoyable and such a success is the fact that the discs from each season’s set are clearly marked. It would have been easy for the people at Shout! Factory to just toss all ten discs into the box and called it with the set’s companion episode list printed on the inside of the box’s cover art. But being that Shout! Factory is the leading name in the world of home entertainment, that didn’t happen. The discs from each season are clearly marked. That combined with the companion episode list wholly eliminates any chance of confusion for viewers trying to find specific episodes. The partnering of those two elements makes for one final, solid part of the whole that makes Hey Dude: The Complete Series a welcome addition to any family’s home DVD library. Combined with all of the other noted elements, they show in whole once again why Hey Dude: The Complete Series is so deserving of being called one of this year’s best new box sets for the whole family and why Shout! Factory remains today the leading name in home entertainment.

Hey Dude: The Complete Series is the perfect final statement from Shout! Factory for this modern classic live-action, teen centric series from Nickelodeon. Smart packaging, equally smart writing and a complete episode prove that argument. With any luck it won’t be the last of Nickelodeon’s classic series to be released by Shout! Factory. God forbid it is. But if it is, then it is a great way to go out as it shows once again what once made Nickelodeon so great and what still makes Shout! Factory the greatest name in home entertainment. Hey Dude: The Complete Series will be available on Tuesday, March 10th exclusively in Wal-Mart stores across the country. Shout! Factory To Release Hey Dude: The Complete Series This Spring

Courtesy: Nickelodeon/Shout! Factory

Courtesy: Nickelodeon/Shout! Factory

Pull out those cowboy hats and boots, folks. It’s time to saddle up one more time and head back out to the famed Bar None Ranch. That’s because this spring, Nickelodeon and Shout! Factory will finally release Nickelodeon’s classic live action teen-based sitcom Hey Dude in its entirety.

All five seasons of Nickelodeon’s Hey Dude will be released in one single DVD box set on Tuesday, March 10th. The answer to NBC’s own famed and beloved Saturday morning teen sitcom Saved By The Bell, Hey Dude was the polar opposite of that other sitcom. Rather than take the standard high school backdrop and stories, Hey Dude put a group of teens out in the wild west (so to speak) and watched them work and grow together. While it may have been a teen-centric sitcom, the show’s scritps along with its backdrop and the cast’s acting completely set it apart from Saved By The Bell and all of the other teen based sitcoms and dramas of the day. Now the show’s original audiences will get to experience that originality for the first time again along with a whole new generation of audiences. Those original audiences will be reminded with this set, of what once made programming for younger viewers so great while today’s younger viewers will see potentially for the first time what once made such programming great.

Hey Dude: The Complete Series will be released on DVD on Tuesday, March 10th. It will be available exclusively at Wal-Mart stores across America. Pricing information for the box set is not currently available. However, audiences can keep up with that information as well as information on other titles from Shout! Factory online at:
