Leeds’ Latest LP Succeeds Through Musical, Lyrical Variety

Kindie rock stars Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights are scheduled to release their latest full-length album next month.  Brooklyn Baby! is scheduled to be released May 19, 2017 in stores and online. The group’s sixth full-length studio recording and Leeds’ eighth overall full-length studio recording, this latest offering from Leeds and company is another enjoyable offering for audiences of all ages.  That is due in part to the record’s varied musical styles.  This will be discussed shortly.  The album’s equally varied lyrical themes are just as important to discuss in examining this album as its musical arrangements.  The album’s sequencing rounds out its most important elements.  Each element is important in its own right to the recording’s whole.  All things considered, they make Brooklyn Baby! a record that proves to be one of this year’s top new children’s albums.

Brooklyn Baby! is one of this year’s top new children’s albums.  That is due in part to the varied musical arrangements presented throughout the course of its 13-song body.  From one song to the next, Leeds and her band mates—Ian Baggette (bass/vocals), Dan Barman (drums/percussion), Jeff Litman (guitar) and Scott Stein (keyboards)—take listeners through a constantly varying array of genres.  The arrangement in the album’s opener for instance is the type of work that would appeal to fans of Sheryl Crow Shania Twain with its pop-country-esque sound and Leeds’ vocal delivery.  By contrast, ‘Rainbow Bagels From Outer Space’ boasts an arrangement that is just as *ahem* out of this world as its title.  The arrangement in question is a punk-style composition that clearly pays homage to famed New York-based punk forefathers The Ramones.  The fact that the song’s run time is only 1:49 hints at that tribute even more.  Anyone who is familiar with The Ramones music will understand that reference.  On a completely different note (yes, that bad pun was intended) ‘Apples in My Apples’ presents an arrangement that will appeal to fans of John Fogerty.  This proven diversity is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg in exhibiting the album’s overall musical diversity.  ‘Subway,’ the album’s second song exhibits a light, jazzy arrangement that is driven by a pair of maracas and an organ.  ‘Pizza,’ by contrast, is an up-tempo, keyboard-driven pop composition that will put a smile on any listener’s face.  The guitar-driven arrangement exhibited in ‘Shayne Punim’ is just as fun for listeners of all ages.  One could ramble on aimlessly for much longer about each arrangement presented in this record.  All things considered, the arrangements presented here are quite varied.  That maintained variance is certain to keep listeners engaged and entertained.  It is just one of the elements that ensures listeners’ maintained engagement.  The record’s lyrical topics are just as varied as its musical arrangements.

The varied musical arrangements presented throughout the course of Brooklyn Baby!’s 43-minute run time do plenty to keep listeners fully engaged in the record.  It is just one of the items that ensures listeners’ engagement.  The record’s lyrical themes are just as varied as its musical arrangements.  By and large, this record’s lyrical themes are love letters to Brooklyn.  That is obvious in ‘Ferry Nice,’ ‘Subway,’ and ‘Stoop,’ all of which come early in the album’s run.  They aren’t the only songs that pay homage to one of New York’s great five boroughs.  ‘Pizza,’ ‘Hipster in the Making’ and the album’s title track show even more that this album is a virtual love letter to Brooklyn.  However, that love for Brooklyn is just one of the themes woven into the record.  Leeds ties her love for not just Brooklyn but New York in whole into a much bigger theme of unity in ‘Love is Love.’  She writes here, “It doesn’t matter if your house is big or small/It doesn’t matter if you live in New York or Nepal/It doesn’t matter if you’re short or if you’re tall/It shouldn’t matter at all/Cause love makes us family.”  She goes on from here to sing about the irrelevance of people’s religious differences, their cultural differences and their home nations, adding those differences are what should bring everyone together.  This is an important message to which especially adults should listen considering the nation’s current political climate (not to get too political).  ‘Apples in my Apples’ comes across as a commentary about issues with produce and other foods provided to the nation’s grocery stores.  That can be inferred as she sings in the song’s chorus, “You don’t know what you’re getting that the grocery store/It ain’t like what it used to be/When everything was pure.”  Her comments about non-GMO corn, grass-fed cows, free-range chickens and other related matters make even clearer the message in this music.  There’s no denying that at times, it feels a bit preachy.  But she does make a valid point.  On a less controversial note, Leeds also pens a love letter to libraries in ‘Library Book.’  This song sees Leeds singing about the joys of going to the library, finding so many books and simply learning.  In an age when so much of what people consume (including books) has gone digital, having such a lyrical topic pointing out the importance of the printed word and the buildings that house it.  Between these songs and those that profess Leeds’ love to Brooklyn, the whole of the record’s lyrical themes proves to be just as diverse as the record’s musical arrangements.  Keeping that in mind, it becomes clear why those diverse lyrical themes are so important to the record’s whole.  They still are not the last important element to consider.  The record’s overall sequencing is just as important to discuss here as the record’s musical and lyrical content.

The musical and lyrical content presented throughout Brooklyn Baby! are both key elements to its presentation.  That is because of the diversity exhibited in each.  While they are clearly important elements, they are not the record’s only important elements.  The record’s overall sequencing is just as important to discuss as its music and lyrics.  For the most part, the arrangements presented throughout this record are mid-tempo works.  What is interesting is that the tempos and their associated energies vary just as much as the arrangements and lyrics within each work.  Case in point is the record’s first three songs. The dreamy vibe of ‘Ferry Nice’ set against the more light-hearted, playful vibe of ‘Subway’ and the gentle flowing energy of ‘By Myself’ offers up such a wide variety of energies right off the bat.  The energies exhibited throughout the next three songs varies just as much right up to the album’s midway point that is ‘Pizza.’  That song stands out perhaps more than any others here because of the infectious groove established through its arrangement.  The laid back, almost beachy Jack Johnson style energy exhibited in ‘Shayne Punim’ set against the wild energy of ‘Rainbow Bagels From Outer Space’ and the flowing ballad behind ‘Love is Love’ creates just as much contrast as that presented between the record’s other songs. The energies exhibited in the record’s final set of songs contrast one another just as blatantly as those of the other noted works, too.  All things considered, much thought and time was put into Brooklyn Baby!’s sequencing.  The songs’ arrangements present just as much variety in their energies from one to the next as there is in themselves and their lyrical themes.  Keeping all of this in mind, the whole of this record proves to be yet another enjoyable offering from Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, and one more of the year’s top new children’s albums.

Brooklyn Baby!, the latest full-length studio recording from Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights, offers plenty for listeners of all ages to appreciate.  From its musical arrangements to its equally varied lyrical themes and its smart sequencing, it will certainly impress fans new and old alike.  Simply put, variance serves as this album’s strongest point.  That variance, in its musical arrangements and energies and in its lyrical themes, makes this record enjoyable from start to finish.  It ultimately makes this album another enjoyable offering from Joanie Leeds & The Nightlights, and one of the year’s top new children’s albums.  It will be available May 19 via Limbostar.  More information on this album is available online now along with all of the group’s latest news and more at:

Phil’s Picks has already done quite a bit of that, delving into the top titles of the music world’s top titles. There’s still some ground to cover in that realm while beginning to transfer over into the year’s top new DVDs and Blu-rays in each of their different own areas. Lady A’s Latest Live Recording Will Have Fans’ Hands Up And Clapping

Courtesy: Eagle Rock Entertainment

This past October, superstar country music act Lady Antebellum wrapped its “Wheels Up Tour.” The tour, which was in support of its latest full-length studio recording, 2014’s 747, spanned a total of sixty-six dates, eight countries including the United States, Canada, and select European nations, and garnered a total revenue of more than six million dollars. That means that thousands of fans across the world got to see this platinum-selling and Grammy Award-winning country act. However, just as many fans didn’t get to see the trio. That is because as many did get to see the trio perform, its global tour only visited a select group of nations. Its North American tour was far more far-reaching. Last month though, the band teamed up with Eagle Rock Entertainment to give even more fans the chance to see the band perform with the release of its new live recording Wheels Up Tour. There is plenty for fans to appreciate about this performance, originally recorded at the band’s June 27th performance in Irvine, California beginning with the concert’s overall presentation. Audiences get here more than just another run-of-the-mill concert recording. Audiences get to see the band’s concert as well as vignettes featuring fans in attendance and the band’s interaction with said fans before the concert. The show’s set list is just as important to the whole of the recording if not more so. The band’s stage presence is one more important part of the recording’s whole but hardly the last. The concert’s production values are also an important part of the recording’s presentation. Together with the previously noted elements, the presentation of Wheels Up Tour shows in whole to be yet another impressive live recording from Lady Antebellum and more proof of why Eagle Rock Entertainment remains today the leading name in live recordings.

Eagle Rock Entertainment has shown time and time again why it is the leading name in live recordings. It has done so with the release of live recordings from a number of different acts that span the musical universe and with recordings that give audiences the best seat in the house whether or not those audiences were able to be in attendance at the concerts featured in the given recordings. Now with the release of Lady Antebellum’s latest live recording, Wheels Up Tour, it has continued to hold that mantle with strength and pride. The third full-length live recording that the band has released via Eagle Rock Entertainment, this recording is another impressive piece from the two parties first and foremost through its general presentation. The concert presented here is not just a standard, run-of-the-mill concert recording. Instead of just giving audiences the concert, the recording also features vignettes featuring the band’s fans as well as the band and its interaction with its fans outside of the concert. Audiences will be interested to learn of the dedication of some fans. One group of fans, audiences will discover, drove about three days just to see the band’s show. That’s dedication. In another vignette, audiences see the band invite a young lady “up on stage” in a pre-show performance in which the young lady gets to actually perform on her own for both the audience in attendance and for the band. This isn’t just a performance with the band but actually by herself as the band and audience watch. There’s a certain genuine vibe from the band that audiences will appreciate in seeing that genuine respect for fans from the band. At the same time, the love that the fans have for the band is just as pleasant to see. The solid editing between the band’s performance and the recording’s companion vignettes makes the presentation in whole one that entertain audiences from beginning to end and in the same vein will keep them just as engaged.

The general presentation of Lady A’s Wheels Up Tour is in itself plenty of reason for the trio’s fans to add this latest recording to their home music libraries and DVD/Blu-ray collections. It is just one reason that audiences will enjoy this recording. The show’s set list is another important part of the recording’s presentation. The twenty-song set list covers all five of the band’s current albums. Yes, there are six total releases, but one of them is a holiday collection, thus leading the count to actually be five if that makes any sense. What is really interesting about this is of those twenty-songs, the band’s 2010 sophomore album Need You Now is most heavily represented with a total of five tracks. Those tracks are: ‘Perfect Day,’ ‘Hello World, ‘Need You Now,’ ‘Our Kind of Love,’ and ‘American Honey.’ 747, which the tour was supporting, is represented here by four songs. The band’s 2008 self-titled debut is represented with only three songs as is 2011’s Own The Night. Golden gets two nods for a total of eighteen songs. There are also three covers–Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ ‘Aerosmith and Run DMC’s ‘Walk This Way,’ and Shania Twain’s ‘Any Man of Mine’–included in the show for a total of twenty songs. Considering the spread of songs featured in this recording audiences will appreciate just how much of the band’s catalogue is covered here. Add in the mix of covers included in the set, it shows that the band listens, obviously, to more than just other country acts. In turn it might even get audiences that might otherwise not listen to those acts into said acts. To that effect, the set list featured in Wheels Up Tour proves to be just as important to its overall presentation as the band’s performance. It still is not the only remaining important element worth noting in this recording. The band’s stage presence is just as important to note.

The set list that makes up the body of Wheels Up Tour and the overall presentation of the recording contained therein are both equally important to the whole of the recording. While both elements are equally important in their own right to the whole of the recording they are just not all that should be noted. The band’s stage presence couples with the concert’s production values to round out the recording’s most important elements. Audiences will be impressed by the band’s stage presence because of its energy throughout. The trio and its backing musicians give their all throughout the show. And it shows quite well even on the small screen. That clear translation of said energy is thanks to the work of those behind the concert’s cameras and audio boards. The venue’s rather large size allows for plenty of great shots. And the camera crew utilized every one of them, capturing every bit of the band’s energy and the love and energy given by the audience in return. The audio is just as impressive considering the venue’s size. The concert’s audio engineers expertly handled the challenges presented by the venue’s size. They captured the venue’s size by balancing the sound of the trio singing without losing the trio’s vocals in all of its echoing through the concert hall. Also balanced within that element was the crows noise. It complements the audio not just from the trio but its backing musicians, too. The end result of the expert camera work and audio engineering is a concert that captures Lady Antebellum’s enjoyable stage presence quite well. And together with the show’s set list and general presentation of the concert in all of its facets, Wheels Up Tour shows in the end to be yet another must have for any of the trio’s fans. It also proves to be yet an impressive companion to the trio’s previous pair of recordings released via Eagle Rock Entertainment as well as more proof of why Eagle Rock Entertainment remains today the leading name in live recordings.

Lady Antebellum’s Wheels Up Tour live recording is another impressive recording released by the partnership between the trio and Eagle Rock Recording. The third of the band’s live recordings to be released via Eagle Rock Entertainment, it features a concert that is more than just a concert. It actually takes audiences behind the scenes before and during the concert showing why the trio’s fans are so dedicated to the group and why the connection between the two parties is so strong. The set list, which covers all five of the group’s albums so far adds even more reason for fans to add this recording to their respective music libraries and DVD/Blu-ray collections. The combined stage presence by Lady Antebellum and its clear translation via the work of those behind the lenses and audio boards rounds out the presentation, showing once more why any Lady Antebellum fan will appreciate this new recording from the superstar country act. Wheels Up Tour is available now in stores and online. More information on this and other titles from Eagle Rock Entertainment is available online now at:

Twain’s New Live Recording Will Make Her Still The One For Fans Even After Her “Farewell Tour”

Courtesy: Eagle Rock Entertainment

Courtesy: Eagle Rock Entertainment

Earlier this year, country music superstar Shania Twain announced to the world that she will embark on what she is calling her “Farewell Tour” beginning June 5th. Despite calling it her “Farewell Tour,” Twain has also been quick to say that she is not necessarily calling it a career once the tour wraps. In fact, the Canadian-born singer has said herself that after the tour wraps later this fall, she still plans to keep making new music. So that being the case Twain almost sounds as if she is saying without saying that she will keep making new music but has no plans to hit the road again anytime soon in the near future. If that is indeed the case then Eagle Rock Entertainment’s newly released recording Still The One: Live From Vegas is a good replacement for Twain’s fans that might never get to see her live in person again. The main way that it proves itself so enjoyable is through its extensive set list. The show, recorded live at The Colosseum at Ceasar’s Palace in Las Vegas, boasts twenty-three songs and a twenty-fourth set against the show’s closing credits. It includes some of her biggest country and pop-country crossover hits as well as some of her lesser-known material. Of course what’s a show without a show? Twain’s own performance coupled with the show’s massive production make this show just as enjoyable for her fans as the set list itself. And then there are the show’s production values. The show’s presentation on DVD and Blu-ray is just as top-notch as every one of Eagle Rock Entertainment’s previously released live recordings through the years. It is a standard that Eagle Rock has held for years, proving without a doubt once more why Eagle Rock Entertainment is, again, the leader in live recordings. All three elements of Shania Twain’s new concert recording noted here each present their own importance to the recording in whole. All combined they make Still The One: Live From Vegas a live recording that any Shania Twain fan will agree never loses its luster no matter how many times they watch it. And they also make this recording more proof, once more, of why Eagle Rock Entertainment is the leader in live recordings.

Shania Twain’s new live recording Still The One: Live From Vegas may very well be the last time that Twain’s fans get to see her perform live for a long time if reports are to be believed. If it is the last time they see her live for the foreseeable future, then it is a great way for her to go out, even if she isn’t officially “retiring” per se. It proves this first and foremost with its extensive set list. The show’s set list boasts a total of twenty-four songs. The final of those songs is actually used against the show’s credits and was recorded live in Canada rather than during her stint in Vegas. That aside, Twain’s fans will fully appreciate the breadth of the show’s set list. it includes some of her biggest country hits as well as some of her biggest pop-country crossover hits along with a number of her lesser-known songs, too. Those major hits include the likes of: ‘Any Man of Mine,’ ‘Come On Over,’ ‘You’re Still The One, ‘From This Moment On,’ and what is perhaps her biggest hit of all ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman.’ Among her lesser-known songs included in this performance are songs such as ‘I Ain’t No Quitter,’ ‘Carrie Anne,’ ‘No One Needs To Know,’ and ‘Love Gets Me Every Time.’ There are plenty of other songs included in the show that could be noted. These are just some of the pieces included in the show’s extensive set list that make it so enjoyable for Twain’s fans. The mix of those major hits and her lesser-known material is so extensive that it really serves as a clear cross-section of her career. One could almost say it’s like having a greatest hits album wrapped into one giant, extravagant concert that fans will love to watch again and again. Speaking of the show, Twain’s own performance coupled with the show’s production in general is another reason that fans will enjoy this recording so much.

The set list that makes up the body of Still The One: Live From Vegas makes for plenty of reasons for Shania Twain’s fans to pick up this recording. That’s especially the case considering that it could be the last time for a long time that fans get to see her live in any setting. It isn’t the only reason that fans will enjoy this record, either. Twain’s performance coupled with the concert’s overall production makes the set list all the more enthralling for fans. Twain herself keeps the energy flowing from beginning to end even in the show’s few slower moments. There is even plenty of fan interaction throughout the show. She even goes so far as to go out into the crowd in attendance during her performance of ‘Honey, I’m Home,’ and spends time taking selfies with fans, letting fans sing along with her, and give her hugs. All the while there is no security hindering her. It really is an interesting sight to see. And it is one of those moments that shows why she is still such a fan favorite today. In getting out into the audience and even bringing audience members on stage, she doesn’t just perform for the audience. Rather she literally brings the show to the audience. The production of the show itself coupled with her performance makes the concert even more enjoyable for fans. There are large sets used throughout the concert’s various numbers including a wild west town, a camping set, and early on in the show what looks like rocks that one would find out in the desert southwest on which Twain’s backup band performs. The massive video wall behind Twain and company is even incorporated into the production from start to finish. It is used for the songs and for interludes that give Twain time to change her outfits throughout the concert. As if that’s not enough, the standard smoke machines, lasers are there. There are even horses and some horsepower on cables thrown in for good measure, too. And every bit of it feels completely rehearsed with the fullest of precision, too. It shows yet again why the coupling of the show’s production and Twain’s performance (I.E. her stage presence) makes another reason that Still The One: Live From Vegas is a hit for Shania Twain fans of all ages.

The set list featured in Still The One: Live From Vegas partnered with Twain’s stage presence and the show’s overall production make for plenty of reason for Twain’s fans to pick up this newly released live recording. There is still one more aspect of the recording to examine, and it is the same element that deserves examination in any live recording. That element is the concert’s production values (I.E. its audio and video mix). Yet again, Eagle Rock Entertainment has presented in Still The One: Live From Vegas a recording with only the best possible production values. Considering the sheer size of The Colosseum, handling the audio and video–especially the camera angles–had to have presented its own challenges. Because The Colosseum is such a large venue on the inside, the challenge of handling acoustic balance had to have been its own challenge. With a venue of such size, it is so easy for sound to bounce off of everything because of all of the room. This is the case even when the venue is packed with people on and off-stage. Both those charged with handling the live sound and post-production are to be commended for their painstaking efforts. That is because the end product sounds great. Every note is clear from beginning to end. And as massive as The Colosseum is, at no one point do any of the parts–from Twain’s vocals to the instrumental parts–overlap the other. It is all expertly balanced for a sound that is just as great as being there in person if not better than being there.

In regards to the concert’s video mix, having such a large venue is just as challenging as putting cameras in a smaller venue such as perhaps The Ryman Theater in Nashville or the Olympia Theater in Dublin, Ireland. The challenge with such a large venue for the camera crew comes in having so many options yet so few. Camera crews still have to navigate the massive stage production that is Twain’s show and the massive number of people in attendance for the show. Those behind the cameras did their own impressive job in placement of the cameras and in the effects used to heighten the concert’s energy or draw it back in the proper moments. The cameras were placed just off stage, in strategic points in the audience and at other points high above the stage and audience. The zooms, pans and other effects are used tastefully throughout the show. And even the pacing and diversity of the shots is worth mentioning, too. Even these aspects are handled with the utmost expertise. The effect of such precision will have fans in awe especially when the concert’s audio levels are added to the mix. The end result of the camera work and that of the concert’s audio operator(s) is a concert that both looks and sounds great. And because it looks and sounds so great, it makes both the set list and the concert’s overall production completely worth the purchase for any Shania Twain fan. It also potentially makes this concert a candidate for a spot on any critic’s list of the year’s best new live recordings as well as one more example of why Eagle Rock Entertainment remains today the leader in live recordings.

Whether for its production values, Twain’s performance coupled with the show’s overall production, or for the set list, audiences that watch Still The One: Live From Vegas on DVD and Blu-ray will find plenty of reason to enjoy this concert. All three elements together make this recording one that Shania’s fans will agree is an excellent replacement for her live shows that may or may not be done for the foreseeable future. All things considered, the noted elements also justifiably make this concert a viable candidate for any critic’s list of the year’s best new live recordings and more proof of why Eagle Rock Entertainment remains to date the leader in live recordings.
