Slash ft. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators unveiled the latest single and video from its new album this week.
The band premiered its new single, ‘April Fool‘ and its video Thursday. The song and video are the third from the band’s latest album, 4, which was released in February through Gibson Records. The album has also produced the singles, ‘Fill My World‘ and ‘The River Is Rising.’
The musical arrangement featured in ‘April Fool’ is a high energy, blues rock style composition that throws back to the pure guitar rock of the late 80s and early 90s. There are hints throughout the composition of Slash’s work with Guns N’ Roses throughout the work.
The song’s lyrical theme centers on someone who is done being treated badly by another. Kennedy and Slash talked about both elements in prepared statements.
“I’ve got a lot of tapes of us jamming ‘April Fool’ at soundchecks without knowing where it would go, and although it took awhile to put together, it’s a cool riff,” said Slash. “The song really came together when we went into the studio, and it is one of the songs that Dave Cobb had a definite impact on. Certain key elements were missing in the demo, arrangement-wise, and he just went, ‘We’ll connect that right there…’ And I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s a good idea!’ [laughs] Sometimes you just need that other person that you can trust musically. And if they have an idea, you can’t be too precious to try it.”
Added Kennedy, ““It’s one of my favorites. A really fun track. Lyrically it’s about being played, and ultimately you realize you’ve had enough, and you decide you’re going to have the last laugh in the end. That’s where that line ‘I guess the jokes’ on you,’ comes into play. And Dave got his hands dirty on this one. He did some tweaking and suddenly it was like, ‘This is a lot better!’ We were really, really, happy with how it turned out.”
The video for ‘April Fool’ is a familiar, oft-used style presentation. It incorporates footage of the band live on stage as the song plays over the visualization.
In other news, the collective is planning the release of a new vinyl re-issue of 4 for the upcoming Record Store Day celebration on June 18. The vinyl pressing will include four additional songs that were recorded live at Studios 60 in Los Angeles, CA.
The double vinyl presentation is limited to 2,250 copies. More information on the special Record Store Day release is available here.
