Multi-faceted and talented performer Common has joined forces with equally famed pianist/producer Robert Glasper and drummer/producer Karriem Riggins to form a new music super group, and the group is already getting audiences excited about its forthcoming debut album.

The group, known as August Greene, will release its self-titled debut album via Amazon Music on March 9.  In anticipation of the album’s release, the band debuted this week the album’s lead single, ‘Optimistic (ft. Brandy)’ via NPR Music.  The song, streaming now via SoundCloud, mixes a gentle, flowing R&B arrangement that echoes hints of some of Brandy’s most beloved classic hits with an equally flowing, almost easy jazzy piano line and solid hip-hop rhythm for a song that is certain to reach so many listeners.

No online presence has yet been established for August Greene.  The group is set to make its live debut at New York City’s Highline Ballroom for Robert Glasper’s sixth annual Grammy(R) Joint.

Flobots Unveil New LP’s Lead Single

Courtesy: Liveloud

Courtesy: Liveloud

Flobots is giving fans a taste of its next album.

The band released the song ‘Pray’ (Extended) this week.  The song is the first single from the band’s upcoming album NOENEMIES.  The song is available at all digital retailers now.  It can be streamed online now here.  The song’s lyrics are available here.

‘Pray’ was written and recorded early in 2016 ahead of the presidential race between now President Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  The band said the song is a call to action, addressing the problems of racism and division among America’s population.

The song is described as coming from the vantage point of a community realizing the result of its part in the racism that has become so present across the country. The community, in its realization, asks for collective forgiveness for its actions.

NOENEMIES’ lead sing samples an Alan Lomax performance of the Sacred Harp song ‘Antioch’ for its arrangement. A local Denver, CO Sacred Harp group was brought in to sing “re-imagined” lyrics to ‘Antioch’ for the introduction to the extended take on ‘Pray.’

Flobots member Johnny 5 said hearing ‘Antioch’ had a powerful impact on him, adding it led to a deep appreciation for Sacred Harp singing.

“When I first heard ‘Antioch’ it felt like an exorcism…,” Johnny 5 said. “Digging deeper, we realized that the entire culture of Sacred Harp singing fully embodies the spirit that has fueled the direction of our new music. Songs of power. Songs that celebrate community. Songs designed to be experienced,  not performed. Songs meant to be sung out with strength.”

Flobots will host a Facebook Live Q&A session on Jan. 30 to discuss in more depth the topics addressed in its new single. The session will begin at 10 p.m. ET.  Anyone wanting to take part can RSVP and present questions for the session here.

Flobots will also partner with Denver, CO-based dance company Wonderbound for a series of live performance collaborations dubbed “Divisions” to promote its new album.  The collaboration will see the group performing dance routines to Flobots’ new songs.

The performances begin April 14 and run through April 30.  They will be held at a series of venues around Denver.  Fans can check out the dates for the shows and purchase tickets here.

Dave Ellefson’s EMP Label Group has expanded its roster again.

Heaven Below, which features Union Underground/Lita Ford guitarist Patrick Kennison, has joined the label’s ever-growing stable of up-and-coming artists.  The band will release its new album Good Morning Apocalypse via EMP Label Group on Friday, October 14th.  The album, the band’s fourth full-length studio effort, is a concept record that is set in a post-apocalyptic world.  It features guest appearances from Lita Ford, Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys, Broken Teeth), Udo Dirkschneider (Accept) and Kobra Paige of Kobra and the Lotus.  Kennison explained in an interview that the album has been in the works for some time.

“Nearly four years ago the band and I decided that wed like to start working on a concept record,” he said. “We knew how ambitious it sounded to even consider that, but once several legendary artists offered to help make it become a reality, we knew we had something.”

Kennison also discussed the album’s overall sound, noting its mix of old school rock and more modern elements.  “With over 30 songs written, we narrowed it down to the top 12,” he said.  “Udo Dirkschneider, Lita Ford, Jason McMaster, and Kobra Paige all stepped up to lend their amazing talents.  We feel this album is a powerful culmination of old school metal meets current fresh metal.  This kind of undertaking only comes along once in a lifetime, and we think we captured this moment on Good Morning Apocalypse.  The timing was perfect with EMP’s outside of the box approach to new music.”

The band has made available a teaser stream featuring samples of each of the album’s 12 songs online now via Soundcloud.  Audiences can check out the stream online now here.  The album’s full track listing is noted below.

Along with its upcoming tour dates, the band is also putting the finishing touches on its new live DVD, which is currently set to be released later this year.  Its title has not yet been revealed.  Solberg discussed the DVD in his interview, too noting what fans can expect from the recording in comparison to so many other live recordings out there.  “The recording of the DVD went great, and it was one of the best nights of our career so far!,” he said.  We just received the rough mix of the Audio, and we can tell that it’s definitely approved. On most live albums these days, bands are re-recording most of the stuff afterwards in the studio, to make it sound “perfect”. For us that’s out of question. We wanna keep the live feel, especially to give a big contrast to the rather “perfected” studio albums! Definitely more organic!”

Leprous’ new live DVD and its upcoming tour are in support of its most recent full-length studio recording The Congregation.  It is still available now in standard jewel case CD, digital download, limited edition Media Book CD, and 2LP platform.  The 2LP platform also includes a bonus track titled ‘Pixel.’  The album can be purchased in physical  form throughout Europe from the IOM web shop.  While audiences await the band’s upcoming live dates and live DVD, they can check out the video for ‘The Price’ now here.  It is one of the songs included in the body of The Congregation.  Audiences can also view the lyric video for ‘Slave’ online via the band’s official YouTube channel.  ‘Rewind’ is streaming in full now also via SoundCloud.

Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Cannibal Corpse) manned the boards for the 11-song record.  It is not the first time that he has worked with the band.  He also helmed the band’s self-titled 2012 album and its follow-up, 2014’s This Endless War.  Guitarist Alex Wade discussed the changes that listeners can expect from the band this time out with the press, noting the dynamic contrast of the songs and the role of the band members’ personal growth in the album’s sound.  “It’s the most dynamic record we’ve done, in the sense that one song can be very aggressive while the next one will be softer and sentimental,”  he said.  “At this point in our career and as we grow older, we are taking a more open-minded approach to creating our music, allowing what we think sounds good to evolve naturally, rather than to just write what is expected of us.”   The album’s complete track list is noted below.

Michael Franti and Spearhead will release their latest full-length studio recording this summer.  The album, Soulrocker, is currently scheduled to be released Friday, June 3rd in stores and online.  Ahead of the album’s release the duo debuted one of the album’s songs over the weekend.

‘We Are All Earthlings’ was debuted this past Friday in honor of Earth Day.  The song, Franti explains, is a tribute to all of the people of the planet and to the planet itself.  “I believe in making music for one reason, which is, I care about people and the planet,” he said.  ‘We Are All Earthlings’ is a song that honors the beauty and importance of every single living thing on this Earth; a reminder that we are ALL Earthlings and we are in this together.”  Audiences can stream the song online now via Soundcloud.  The song was released in partnership with the Earth Day Network.  Earth Day Network representative Tim McHugh discussed the song’s premiere and its importance in spreading the message of concer for the Earth to more people.  “Earth Day is the single largest worldwide environmental event each year,” McHugh said.  And each year something special happens to set it apart and move our cause just a little bit further down the road. This year we are glad to be able to partner with Michael Franti and his incredible new song ‘We Are All Earthlings.’ It will help us reach out and communicate to new groups of people and make our common concern for the earth just that much more vital and powerful.”

Along with the song’s stream Franti also recently released a mini-documentary titled Why I Make Music.  The presentation backs up Franti’s words, proving that he not only talks the talk but walks the walk, too.  Audiences can view the program now online via Franti’s official YouTube channel.
