Zakk Wylde releases his new album Book of Shadows II this week.  Ahead of its release, the veteran rocker debuted the video for one of the album’s songs last week.

The video follows Wylde as he walks through a rather bleak looking forest setting.  Within the forest is an interesting group of figures.  It was helmed by long time Black Label Society collaborator Justin Reich.  Of Wylde discussed Reich’s involvement in the video in a recent interview, noting Reich’s talents behind the lens.  “Black Label Brethren O’ Doom Father Justin Reich Did Another Amazing job Directing the video,” he said.  He jokingly added of Reich’s vision, “I asked Father Justin to capture the sights, sounds, smell and feel of the first day my parents dropped me off at kindergarten. Watching the video made me realize why I’m so fond of reading and vegetables.”

While he doesn’t appear in the visualized take on the song Slipknot/Stone Sour front man Corey Taylor does make an appearance on the LP version of the song.  Wylde also shared his thoughts on Taylor’s involvement in the song noting, “Having Father Corey Taylor’s brilliant Voice sing on ‘Sleeping Dogs’ fulfilled my vision of the two of us as the modern day Simon & Garfunkel.”  Not one to ever be entirely serious he added of his relationship with Taylor, “We may not be as legendary, talented or as handsome as those two, but we’ve eaten at some of the same restaurants as them.”

Zakk WYlde Revolver Mag CoverAlong with the debut of his new video Wylde is also on the cover of the new issues of Revolver magazine and Guitar World magazine.  He appears alongside fellow guitar legend Buddy Guy in the new issue of Guitar World.  Each can be purchased online via Revolver’s official online store and that of Guitar World.

Otherwise Starts Recording Process For Its Latest LP

Las Vegas based hard rock band Otherwise has entered the studio to start work on its latest album.

Peace at All Costs will be the band’s second full length release for Century Media Records and third overall full length release. It is being produced by Grammy Award-winning producer David Bottrill (Tool, Flaw, Muse, Stone Sour, Godsmack, Staind, Peter Gabriel) in Las Vegas at Audio Mix House and Vegas View Recording Studios. Front man Adrian Patrick discussed bringing Bottrill on board to man the boards for this record and how much it means to have him on board for the record’s creation. “We’ve always felt different from other bands; not just as performers but as people also,” he said. Being in the studio with an elite producer like David Bottrill, knowing his impressively diverse resume and discerning taste in the artists he chooses to work with, only reinforces our resolve. Our next album, “Peace at All Costs,” will prove what we are capable of.”

The band will take a short break from working on its album next Saturday, April 12th as it is scheduled to take part in Orlando, Florida’s annual Earthday Birthday Festival.

George Cappellini, Sr. (Former VP of Promotion for Geffen Records and VP of Rock Promotion for Elektra Records) co-manages Otherwise. He was very excited in talking to the press about the past, present, and future of Otherwise. “I wanted to work the band to radio after hearing “Soldiers” on Octane,” he said. Fast forward two years later after 200+ shows, two Top 20 Singles, and now being a part of the management team, this band has grown into a powerhouse right before our eyes. You will all hear that on their sophomore album.”

Century Media Records head Robert Kampf has already had a listen to some of the material that fans will get to hear later this year. He put in the simplest terms what he thought of what he heard. He told reporters, After hearing the demos for the new album, OTHERWISE is going to be the future of rock, period.”

This Is Your Life Is Not Just Another Throw-Away Tribute Album

Courtesy: Rhino Records

Courtesy: Rhino Records

Tribute albums are a dime a dozen. So many tribute albums are released each year that one can’t help but feel that the labels that release them care more about their bottom line than about actually celebrating said artists being given tribute. That being the case, one can’t help but wonder why This Is Your Life, the new tribute album to iconic rock front man Ronnie James Dio, would be any different from those records. The answer to that is not a simple one. One reason that this tribute album stands out is the list of performers and bands that recorded songs for the compilation. It’s a who’s who of hard rock from the past, present, and even future of the genre. Another reason that this compilation stands out is its track listing. This record boasts some of the most beloved songs of RJD’s career. And last but definitely not least important to consider in this record is the fact that it isn’t just a means for the label distributing it to make money. It actually doubles as a fundraiser for RJD’s Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. So it’s actually a record crafted to essentially help give back. How many bands, artists, groups, etc. can say that they have crafted an entire album simply to raise funds for charity? That–along with the list of songs and performers, bands, etc. on this album–makes This Is Your Life an album that stands well above the rest of the otherwise throw-away albums claiming to be tribute albums.

Courtesy: Rhino Records

Courtesy: Rhino Records

The primary aspect of This Is Your Life that makes it stand out against all of the other tribute albums out there is the list of performers drafted to record songs for the record. The list of performers drafted for this record is a who’s who of hard rock’s past, present, and even future. It wasn’t just a mish-mash of bands, artists and groups tossed together. Everybody tapped to record for this tribute record is either a counterpart to RJD or someone that grew up idolizing him and his talents. Veterans such as Anthrax, Motorhead, Scorpions, Biff Byford, and Rob Halford perform alongside younger acts such as Adrenaline Mob, Killswitch Engage, and Halestorm over the course of the record’s fourteen total tracks. That collection of bands and artists singing Dio’s hits is in itself a musical history lesson. It introduces younger audiences that might be more familiar with the latter grouping of bands and artists to the veterans and to the music of Dio. To that extent, This Is Your Life quickly earns major points. Even more points come from the sampling of Dio’s music in question chosen for this compilation.

The list of bands, artists, and groups tapped to record RJD’s music for This Is Your Life is in itself a major boon for the record. As noted, it isn’t just a mish-mash of bands, artists, and groups. It is a collection of bands, group, and artists that played alongside Dio during his career, and those that have come since, growing up with the music of Ronnie James Dio. In short, it’s a collection of individuals that have the utmost respect for Dio and his music. Speaking of that music, the songs chosen to be included on this record are another part of the whole that makes it so enjoyable for listeners. Every song on this record is a classic in its own way. From the more well-known pieces such as ‘The Mob Rules’, ‘Neon Knights’ and ‘Holy Diver’ to slightly lesser known songs such as ‘Straight Through The Heart’, Egypt (The Chains Are On’, and ‘Temple of the King’ This Is Your Life does quite the job of chronicling the career of a man that was and is still even in death, one of the greatest vocalists and performers in the history of hard rock.

The music and performers chosen for This Is Your Life are both key components of the success of the album. As important as they are to the success of the record, there is still one central aspect of the recording that makes it so worth picking up. That aspect is the fact that a certain portion of the sales of the album will go to benefit Dio’s Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, which was established by Dio’s wife Wendy Dio. Bands, groups and artists go out on tour every year or they take part in fundraising concerts. How many artists can say they were part of a recording project that was also meant as a way to pay tribute to one of their own, too? It’s just like bringing home a hard rock festival without having to pay the exorbitant prices for tickets, souvenirs, sodas and more. And at the same time, audiences that purchase the album will actually be helping to fund an organization that works to research and promote awareness of cancer, as well as educate people about early detection in hopes of one day stopping it.

This Is Your Life is available now in stores and online. It can be ordered online via Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Ronnie-James-Dio-This-Your/dp/B00IACUO8S/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1396440364&sr=1-1&keywords=dio+this+is+your+life and can be downloaded via iTunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/ronnie-james-dio-this-is-your/id829325064.

Oleander Returns With A Solid New Rock Record

Courtesy: Re_Ignite Records

Courtesy: Re_Ignite Records

Oleander is back with its fifth full length studio release.  The band’s new album, Something Beautiful set to be released next Tuesday, April 16th

Oleander has come a long way since the days of its breakout 1993 hit, ‘Why I’m Here.’  This latest release from the Sacramento, California based band shows a lot of growth all the way around.  It has more of a pure rock sound and less like something that would be more fitting for any top 40 station.  This is actually a very good thing.  Something Beautiful opens with a high energy rocker in ‘Fight!’  This song is an excellent opener, with its driving guitars and chants of “Fight!/Fight!/Fight!/Fighting for our lives!”  Front man Thomas Flowers isn’t singing about literally fighting for one’s lives.  It comes across in more of a metaphorical sense.  He sings, “It’s a little bit late now/To look at the clock/There’s not a moment to waste/And not a second to wait/We gotta pick up the pace/There’s no time left to stop/Keepin’ your heartbeat racing/Feel it with every breath you’re takin’/And it’s all or nothing now/Standing on pins and needles/my mind’s in overdrive/Fight for our lives!”  It comes across as a statement of making the most of every second in life, and doing whatever it takes to succeed.  Keeping this in mind, the song’s musical side makes for a solid companion to its lyrical side and together, the pair makes it a solid first impression after just over ten years between albums.

‘Fight!’ is followed up by two more equally driving songs in its title track and the follow-up, ‘Bulletproof’ before pulling back just a little bit in the ballad, ‘Until It’s Over.’  ‘Until It’s Over’ is exactly what audiences expect from a ballad.  It starts off softly with a semi-acoustic sound before moving into something slightly heavier.  Flowers sings about a person’s devotion to a relationship here.  He sings, “I ain’t going anywhere/Not walking out/Not leaving.”  He goes on presenting a handful of worst case scenarios that could break a relationship for one reason or another.  But through it all, the figure in his song declares his (or her even?) dedication no matter what.  It’s one for all the romantics out there.

Things pick back up after ‘Until It’s Over’ as the band moves into ‘Never Too Late.’  The band keeps the energy flowing straight through ‘Daylight’ before pulling back again and ending more gently with ‘How Do We Say Goodbye.’  There is a bonus song that is just as subtle after this piece.  By the time listeners reach this point, they know that having listened through this whole album, they have realized that while Oleander may not have released a new album in ten years, this band hasn’t missed a step with this new release.  The band is hitting the road in support of Something Beautiful with a tour beginning next Saturday, April 20th.  The band will be at Buzzfest in The Woodlands, TX alongside Bush, Shinedown, Stone Sour, and Hollywood Undead.  More tour dates are possible.  For a full tour rundown and all the latest tour dates, news and more, fans can follow Oleander on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/oleanderband and its official website, http://www.oleander.net
