2016 has been an outstanding year for new music.  New albums from every genre have flooded the market.  While albums take center stage for so many audiences and critics alike, they are not the only new recordings that are deserving of attention.  EPs deserve just as much attention as albums this year and every year.  Keeping that in mind, this critic has maintained a list of the year’s top new EPs throughout the year.

Now with the year’s final weeks winding down, Phil’s Picks begins its annual “Best Of” lists with a list of the year’s top new EPs as, again, they are deserving of as much attention as the mass of albums released across the board.  This year’s list is topped by hard rock outfit Red Tide Rising’s new EP Voices.  Also included in this year’s list are new EPs from Fenix TX, Silvertung, Orgy and many others.

As in previous years, the lists presented by Phil’s Picks are topped by the year’s top 10 new releases.  An extra five releases worthy of honorable mention are included, too.  That brings each list’s count to 15.  Having said all of that, here is the first of Phil’s Picks “Best Of” lists for 2016.  It is 2016’s Top 10 New EPs.

Tengger Cavalry Unveils ‘Mountain Side’ Video

Tengger Cavalry debuted its new music video this week.

The New York-based Mongolian metal act debuted the video for its song ‘Mountain Side’ on Monday.  The song is the title from the band’s newly released Mountain Side EP.  The video features live footage of the band presented in a rather psychedelic fashion.  Audiences can view the video online now via Noisey.

The band’s new video was directed by one of its own, Uljmuren, the band’s morin khuur player.  The morin khuur is also known as a horsehead fiddle.  It is considered to be one of the Mongol people’s most important instruments and a symbol of the Mongolian nation.  It is literally topped by a carved horse’s head and is played in the style similar to a cello.  Front man Nature Ganganbaigal noted Uljmuren’s experience behind the lens in discussing why the band opted to have him helm its new video.  “Before Uljmuren came to the US, he was a TV show and film director in Inner Mongolia in China,” he said.  “He participated in more than 200 episodes of TV show production. His TV show was very popular among the Mongolian community in China. The show discussed controversial conflicts between modern society and nomadic life. He also went to professional music school in Beijing and participated in multiple rock/metal bands.”

Tengger Cavalry was recently awarded a Bronze Medal for ‘Mountain Side’ as part of the annual Global Music AwardsMountain Side presents a mix of alternate arrangements of songs from the band’s latest full-length studio recording Blood Sacrifice Shaman (2015), folk recordings, and new songs.  Fans can stream Blood Sacrifice Shaman online now via the band’s Bandcamp site.  The complete track listing for Mountain Side is noted below.
