Pop punk band Urethane opened the weekend by premiering a new single.
The band premiered its new single, ‘Remember Me’ Friday. The song is featured in the band’s brand new 2-song EP, Dog Years. The song’s premiere came two days after the band debuted its companion video through Thrasher magazine.
The musical arrangement featured in Urethane’s new single is a fun, infectious composition that immediately lends itself to comparison to the best works from the likes of Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys and others of that ilk. The pairing of bassist Chad Ruiz’s performance with that of guest vocalist Brenna Red’s (The Last Gang) singing forms a fun foundation for the song. The choruses, with their multi-part harmonies are vintage style punk leanings, making for even more enjoyment.
No information about the song’s lyrical theme was presented in the news release announcing the song’s premiere. The song seems to present the all too familiar theme of someone wanting another to remember that person even though a relationship has come to its end. Considering this seeming theme, it makes the arrangement all the more infectious and enjoyable considering how easy it would have been for the group to make the arrangement more brooding in nature. The mood is more hopeful and upbeat, which is certain to make the song resonate with audiences even more.

Veteran punk rock band Anti-Flag is making lots of headlines this week. That is because Friday, the band debuted the video for its new single, ‘Sold Everything’ and a new North American tour set to launch Feb. 2 in Austin, TX. The tour, which is scheduled to run through March 19 in Reno, NV, and the new single and video, are in support of the band’s brand new album, Lies They Tell Our Children. The band’s 13th album, it is certain to appeal to the band’s established audiences. That is due in part to its general presentation, which will be discussed shortly. The musical arrangements featured in that general presentation are of their own interest in the bigger picture of the album’s presentation and will be discussed a little later. The lyrical themes that accompany that musical content is also important to the album’s appeal and in turn will be discussed later, too. Each item noted here is important in its own way to the whole of the album’s presentation. All things considered they make Lies They Tell Our Children a welcome new offering from Anti-Flag.
Lies They Tell Our Children, Anti-Flag’s 13th new album, is an interesting new offering from the veteran punk rock band. The record’s appeal comes in pat through its general presentation. The general presentation here is a reference to the fact that according to the band, this record is not just another collection of songs, but rather a concept album. The information provided to the press about the album does not specifically outline the story behind the concept, but bassist Chris Barker (a.k.a. Chris #2) is quoted in the news release as saying the overall message in the album is anti-capitalist and that the songs take on issues, such as universal healthcare and environmental preservation. Front man Justin Geever (a.k.a. Justin Sane) added to the discussion, noting the economic and social divide among the haves and have nots has only gotten worse in America over time and continues to get worse, and that is the overarching theme of the album’s concept. Keeping that in mind, even if there is in fact one central story here, that overarching theme is nothing new from Anti-flag, as the band is known quite well for tackling such topics throughout each of its existing albums. In listening to the album from start to end, those themes are definitely there, though the album does not seem to come across as a concept album in the purest sense of the term. Despite that, the overarching concept behind the songs is still reason enough to take in this record.
Keeping in mind the positive impact of the overall concept behind Anti-Flag’s new album, it is just one of the aspects that makes the record worth hearing. The overall musical content that makes up the record’s body is also of note. From the album’s outset to its end, what audiences get in this album is a variety of punk sounds just as in so much of the band’s catalog. Right from the record’s outset, that opener, ‘Sold Everything’ presents a sort of folk-influenced punk sound that the band has presented in songs past. At the same time, the arrangement here still boasts its own identity separate from those other works, leading to plenty of engagement and entertainment here. ‘Modern Meta Medicine,’ which immediately follows that song, presents a sound and style that almost immediately lends itself to comparison to works from the likes of AFI. That should come as no surprise, either, considering that the two bands have worked together in the past in the studio and on stage. On another note, ‘Victory OR Death (We Gave ‘Em Hell)’ conjures thoughts of songs composed by the likes of Dropkick Murphys and The Rumjacks, just sans the Celtic influence. In other words, it is a stylistic approach and sound that is starkly different from that of the most of the album’s other work and in a positive way, too, further showing the diversity in the album’s musical presentation. As if that is not enough example of the importance of the album’s musical presentation, a song, such as ‘NVREVER,’ which serves as the album’s penultimate entry, is more of a pure punk rock sound. The driving guitar line here and equally solid time keeping from the drums and the infectious chorus sections make it a work that has some pop punk influence but still has a certain pure punk element at the same time. That balance of influences here will make the arrangement appealing to a wide range of punk fans, including those established audiences of Anti-flag. When this song and the others examined here are considered alongside the rest of the album’s entries, the whole comes together to show clearly what makes the album’s overall musical presentation so important to that presentation.
As much as the album’s musical content does to make it appealing, it is just one more part of what makes the album appealing for the noted audiences. The lyrical content that makes up the album’s overall concept does its own share to make the record appealing. As noted already, the lyrical themes that make up the record’s overall concept encompass some very familiar social themes, such as universal healthcare, such as in ‘Modern Meta Medicine,’ civil disobedience and social justice in ‘Victory or Death (We Gave ‘Em Hell)’ and even the impact of war on its innocent victims — those refugees who lose their homes as a result of conflict between others – in ‘The Fight Of Our Lives.’ Between these themes and so many others that make up the album’s lyrical body they collectively make for just as much engagement and entertainment in this album as the record’s musical arrangements. All in all, the lyrical “concept” at the heart of Lies They Tell Our Children and the musical body that accompanies that content makes for plenty of reason for audiences to hear Anti-Flag’s latest album. Even with the record not necessarily being a concept record in the purest sense, it is still interesting that the band would take that chance. All things considered, these elements make Lies They Tell Our Children a strong start for the rock community in 2023.

The lyrical content that makes up the album’s “concept” is as familiar as ever, as it takes on so many social and political topics. This is nothing new for the band, either. What’s more, most of the themes here are just as timeless as those in the band’s existing catalog, so it is sure to create its own appeal for audiences. When this is considered along with the appeal ensured through the album’s musical content and the very fact that the band tried to make the album a concept record, the collective of all of this makes the album a positive new offering from Anti-Flag that makes for a positive start for the rock community in 2023.

The old year is getting ready to finish once again and make way for a new year that is already starting to see a handful of new releases scheduled. New material from the likes of Anti-Flag and The Winery Dogs are already scheduled for release in January and February respectively. Mercury Studios (formerly Eagle Rock Entertainment) also has new archived live recordings on the way from Marvin Gaye and Ella Fitzgerald. Even the independent music community has lots of stuff planned for next year, including a new release from indie rock band Starcrazy in for them of its new album, Another Day, Another Squalor. Of course lots more music is sure to be announced in the coming days and weeks, meaning it won’t be long before things already start picking up.
While critics’ new music calendars will start filling up very soon, their 2022 calendars are finally done now that the last days of the year are here. One category of new music that doesn’t get enough attention from one year to the next is the smallest release, the EP. That is why this critic has made it a point each year to focus on the recording, which for some acts is a way to test the waters before releasing their debut albums and for others a space filler, for its own year-ender list.
This year’s list of top new EPs touches on a variety of acts. From independent acts to more established acts, lots of EPs have been released this year. The Rumjacks and Flatfoot 56 have partnered to release a new split EP.
The bands are scheduled to release the new six-song EP May 6. A teaser for the album is streaming here. In anticipation of the record’s release, each band has released a new song from the EP and a companion video for the songs.
The Rumjacks’ new single is titled ‘Whitecaps.’ The song is a sociopolitically charged composition, according to front man Mike Rivkees.
“The song is vaguely about the rise of far right nationalist movements,” Rivkees said. “White caps meaning rough waters due to high wind… But also could be interpreted as KKK hoods. It just means something big and bad is coming politically. I wrote it based on seeing swastikas all over Eastern Europe. As a Jew, it rattles you to the core to know people want you to not exist.”
The ‘Whitecaps’ video is streaming here. The video is a simple presentation. It features the band standing around in an alley, drinking beer, talking, and singing along to the song as the song’s lyrics appear on screen and as the song plays over the visualization.
The song’s musical arrangement is a straight forward punk rock composition. It is everything that audiences have come to expect from the band, with the tight guitar riffs, and solid time keeping. Any punk purist will find the song engaging and entertaining.
Flatfoot 56’s contribution to the EP comes in the form of the song ‘Mud’ and its video. Band member Tobin Bawinkle talked about the song.
“The song ‘Mud’ is a song about the process of personal recovery that follows after the breakdown of a long-held and important relationship,” he said. “It equates the journey toward recovery to a long and unpaved road. The only way to make it through the deep ruts of this road is through forgiveness. This process is a long slog through the mud, but ends in ultimate peace. While the song’s content has a heavy-hearted theme, it is also laced with a hopeful undertone of optimism in the line “I’ll be doing, I’ll be doing just fine.”
The song’s musical arrangement is just as familiar for any punk purists. The accordion line is there, as is the banjo and punk rock guitar riffs and vocal harmonies. It is another song that likens itself to works from Dropkick Murphys and to those of The Rumjacks.

Dropkick Murphys is scheduled to re-issue its latest album, Turn Up That Dial next week.
The band announced Thursday, it is scheduled to re-issue the album exclusively digitally March 18. The new, expanded re-issue will feature three bonus tracks, one of which is the band’s own take of the beloved song, ‘We Will Overcome.’ The band is scheduled to release the new single and its video Tuesday.
In other news, Dropkick Murphys will celebrate St. Patricks Day live online with its fans with a free, livestream concert. The concert is scheduled to stream live at 9 p.m. EDT. Audiences can go here to stream the concert.
The band’s upcoming free, livestreaming concert is part of a tour that the band is quickly winding down in support of its new album. The Bombpops and The Rumjacks are serving as support for the tour.

Dropkick Murphys co-vocalist Al Barr will not join the band on the road for its upcoming tour.
The band made the announcement Tuesday through a prepared statement that is presented below.
“Hello everyone,
We’ve been hard at work rehearsing for the first St. Patrick’s Day Tour in THREE YEARS.
This morning, we have very sad news to tell you. Over the last few months, Al’s mother, Ingrid, has suffered a series of strokes. She has also been diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. Al, his sister and wife have been caring for Ingrid round the clock for months. Please join all of us in holding Ingrid in your prayers.
Dropkick Murphys have always been about FAMILY. And in the spirit of FAMILY FIRST, Al has had to make the very difficult decision to stay home for the rest of the year to care for his Mom, so he will not be with us on the upcoming tour or in Europe this summer. We appreciate your compassion for Al’s family, and we know as part of our family you will understand and support us in dealing with these difficult times.
THE SHOW WILL GO ON with Ken covering most of Al’s parts…along with some special guests like Jesse Ahern, Mikey Rivkees from The Rumjacks and Jen Razavi from The Bombpops joining us on vocals as well. Lewy Body Dementia is a decline in a person’s cognitive abilities according to information from the National Institute of Health’s National Institute on Aging. The condition is believed to be caused in part by the loss of neurons that create chemicals needed to the brain’s proper functioning.
As the condition progresses in patients, those people experience hallucinations, memory loss, and inability to concentrate.
Dropkick Murphys’ upcoming tour is in support of its latest album, Turn Up That Dial, which was released in 2021 through its own label, Born & Bred Records.

Independent Celtic punk outfit The Rumjacks released its latest record, Brass for Gold Friday. The band is scheduled to join its Celtic punk counterparts Dropkick Murphys on the road later this month as support for DKM as it promotes the eight-song record/ The EP has already produced three strong singles in the form of its opener, ‘Bounding Main,’ ‘Bloodsoaked in Chorus’ and ‘One For The Road.’ All three songs are memorable entries in the 24-minute presentation and are just a sample of what makes it so enjoyable. ‘Across The Water,’ one of the EP’s later entries, is interesting in its own right and will be discussed shortly. ‘Kicking Soles’ is just as notable as the EP’s singles, too. It will be discussed a little later. ‘Blinding Flashes,’ the record’s penultimate track, is also of note and will also be discussed later. Each track noted is important in its own way to the whole of the EP’s presentation. When they are considered alongside the EP’s current singles and with its two remaining songs, the whole makes the presentation in whole the year’s first great new EP.
The Rumjacks’ brand new EP, Brass for Gold is a strong new offering from the band. All three singles that it has already produced make that clear through their musical and lyrical content alike. They are not its only notable songs. ‘Across The Water’ is just as notable as those songs. The song’s musical arrangement is an upbeat composition, but is also decidedly contemplative in its approach. Needless to say the gritty vocals and the harmonies in the instrumentation make for an overall presentation that is purely punk. It is just part of what makes the song enjoyable. The lyrical theme that accompanies the song’s musical arrangement adds to that enjoyment.
The lyrical theme featured in this song comes across as centering on the all too familiar topic of a broken relationship. That is inferred as front man Mike Rivkees sings, “My darling dear/I think the hour’s drawing near/Your bag’s packed/And your heart begins to race/Should’ve seen it coming/From the time that you started running/My darling dear/What a hell of a year/You can never see the way/You looked at me that day/And you can never feel the things/You hold but push away/You won’t find yourself across the water/You won’t find yourself across the bay.” This is pretty clear in its message, which continues in similar fashion in the song’s second verse. To that end, there is little if any need to continue on from here about that item. Looking at this theme and the mood set through the song’s arrangement, the whole makes this song just as easy a single as the songs already presented as singles. To that end, it becomes clear why the song is its own notable addition to the album.
‘Kicking Soles’ is another notable addition to Brass for Gold immediately catches listeners through its musical arrangement. The use of the penny whistle and the guitars, drums, mandolin, accordion, and bass immediately lend this song to comparison to so many works from Dropkick Murphys. As a matter of fact, if a person heard this song and did not know it was from The Rumjacks, they would think it was from Dropkick Murphys. The similarities are that close. That is not necessarily a bad thing, either. It is just one part of what makes the song stand out, too. The song’s lyrical theme adds its own appeal to the presentation here, too.
The lyrical theme featured alongside the song’s musical arrangement seems to be a rumination on life and what we leave behind. This is inferred as Rivkee sings about the years happening to us like the river running dry, and that day that that last tear falls from the face. He even goes so far as to make mention of decaying and decomposing. That would leave the song’s title to be a reference to perhaps the road we walk in life. This is all just this critic’s interpretation. It is as if the song is encouraging listeners to make the most of their lives. If in fact that is the case, then it would make the semi-sombre tone in the arrangement make more sense. Keeping all of this in mind, the whole of the seeming lyrical theme and its companion musical arrangement makes the song in whole another notable addition to the EP.
‘Blinding Flashes,’ which is the EP’s penultimate entry, is one more notable addition to Brass for Gold. As with the other songs examined here, that is due in part to its featured musical arrangement. Where the other songs examined here exhibit the band’s familiar Celtic punk leanings, this song actually goes in a somewhat different direction, opting more for a semi-western sound and stylistic approach. The blend of that element with the band’s more punk approach makes this arrangement another notable addition to the record.
When the unique musical arrangement featured in this song is paired with the song’s lyrical theme, the song becomes even more interesting. The theme here is one of paying tribute to a military hero. That is inferred through the mention of Iwo Jima and the man laying face down in the ditch of a shed. In fact, if the lyrics are to be fully understood, the final words in this song note the name Ira Hayes, who was a Native American Marine and the last of the men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. The additional mention that “he would say the lights are just a show” and how he was defamed would seem to hint even more in that direction. Keeping all of this in mind, that the band would honor the life and legacy of Hayes is original to say the very least. That, together with the song’s musical arrangement makes the song stand out even more. When the song in whole is considered along with the other songs examined here, the EP’s singles, and its two remaining songs, the whole makes the record overall a positive new offering from The Rumjacks that is well worth hearing.
The Rumjacks’ new EP, Brass for Gold, is a strong new offering from the band. That is thanks to its musical and lyrical content alike. The record’s singles have already made that clear. The songs examined here serve even more to make clearer. The band debuted the record’s then latest single, ‘Bloodsoaked in Chorus‘ and its video last month. The group premiered the EP’s lead single, ‘One For The Road‘ Oct. 29.
The musical arrangement featured in ‘Bounding Main’ immediately lends itself to comparison to the works of the band’s fellow Celtic punk rock band, Dropkick Murphys. That is evidenced through the vocals, the use of the banjo and mandolin and even accordion.
No information was provided about the song’s lyrical theme in the press release announcing the debut of the new single and video. The lyrics provided with the video hint at a theme of a couple at a breaking point, literally and figuratively. That is evidenced as the lyrics make note of a woman saying she will not wait for a man “to find what you need.” The later mention of the woman telling the man, “Don’t let the rain fall ’till you’ve got a roof over your head”/She let the strains pull free” further hints at that theme.
If in fact the song’s lyrical theme does focus on the all too familiar topic, then the song’s video makes for an interesting pairing. That is because the video features the band performing its new single aboard a boat and pairs that with vintage footage of people (possibly immigrants) on boats, making their own voyages.

The Rumjacks debuted its latest single and companion video over the weekend.
The band premiered its new single, ‘Bloodsoaked in Chorus‘ Friday, along with the song’s video. The song and its video are the second from the band’s forthcoming EP, Brass For Gold, which is scheduled for release Feb. 11. The band premiered the record’s lead single, ‘One For The Road‘ Oct. 29.
‘Bloodsoaked in Chorus’ takes a different route, musically, than its predecessor. The song’s arrangement takes the band in a more ska-punk direction versus the more direct Celtic punk style and sound of ‘One For The Road.’ At the same time, the band’s familiar Celtic influence is just as present in ‘Bloodsoaked in Chorus’ as in ‘One For The Road.’ The end result is an arrangement that is just as enjoyable as its predecessor in its blend of familiarity and unique approach and sound.
No information was presented about the song’s lyrical theme in the press release announcing the premiere of The Rumjacks’ new single and video. Looking through the lyrics provided with the video though, the song comes across lyrically as being from the vantage point of a man who is pining for a lost love.
The video for ‘Bloodsoaked in Chorus’ is a relatively simple presentation. Much as with the video for ‘One For The Road,’ it largely features footage of the band out and about and on stage as the song plays over that overall visualization.

The musical arrangement featured in ‘Good As Gold’ is, like those of the album’s other singles, everything that audiences have come to expect from Dropkick Murphys. The bagpipes are there complete with all of the band’s familiar punk stylings.
Co-vocalist Ken Casey talked about the song’s lyrical theme in a prepared statement.
‘Good as Gold,’ celebrates the music that shaped the band. It’s about the precious vinyl albums we all listen to, collect, and cherish – and the video shows how that music connects fans through generations,” he said. “It’s about the important role music has played in our lives. The outside world may be going on. Boom, you put your headphones on, drop the needle, and nothing else matters. It’s about how much hope I’ve gotten from music, all of the inspiration, and the way it’s helped me take my frustrations out.”
That lyrical theme plays directly into the song’s video treatment as a young man is shown discovering some of the great music of the past for the first time on vinyl. Along the way, he gets to meet the band and even go for a ride with the guys.
In other news, Dropkick Murphys will bring back its annual St. Patrick’s Day Tour next year. The band announced through a news release Wednesday, it has added Jesse Ahern as support for the upcoming tour. Ahern will join The Bombpops and The Rumjacks as support on various dates.
