Ice Nine Kills’ Latest LP Is A Scary Good New Record

Courtesy: Fearless Records

Halloween is almost over, but horror, like evil, will never die.  Metalcore band Ice Nine Kills is an act that seems to live by that mantra, having released so many albums based on horror novels and movies throughout its life.  The band continued to prove that Oct. 15 when it released its long-awaited new album, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood.  The wait for this record was well worth it, as this critic and any of the band’s fans will agree.  That is proven in part through the musical arrangements featured in this record.  They will be discussed shortly.  The movies represented in the new album add to the record’s appeal in their own way and will be discussed a little later.  The record’s sequencing rounds out its most important elements and will also be discussed later.  Each item noted does its own part to make INK’s new album successful.  All things considered, they make the album another successful offering from the band that is not just a great musical Halloween treat this year, but a great addition to this year’s field of new hard rock and metal albums.

Ice Nine Kills’ latest album, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood is another successful new offering from the band that the band’s fans new and established alike will appreciate.  That is due in no small part to its featured musical arrangements.  The arrangements are important to the record’s success because of the mix of familiar and new sounds and styles that they exhibit.  Right from the album’s outset in the album’s title track, audiences get the band’s familiar melodic metalcore approach, complete with front man Spencer Charnas’ solid mix of clean vocals and screams and the band’s familiar choral element that has become such a trademark of the band’s songs.  From there though, the band changes things up in ‘A Rash Decision.’  The ominous piano line that opens the arrangement is familiar, but as the arrangement progresses, it very quickly turns to a decidedly Slipknot-esque composition with its heavy, driving guitars, screams, and pounding, solid time keeping.  This is an approach that the band has dabbled with in the past, but never to this extent.  ‘Assault & Batteries’ meanwhile takes audiences back to the sounds so familiar in The Silver Scream and even all the way back to the band’s even earlier hit song, ‘Communion of the Cursed.’   Listeners get even more of the noted Slipknot influence in ‘Funeral Derangements,’ which is one of the album’s many singles.  Perhaps the most notable of the album’s arrangements comes in the form of ‘Rainy Day’ (yes another of the album’s singles).  The incorporation of the electronics into the song conjure thoughts of songs from the likes of Gravity Kills and Spineshank.  That newer sound pairs with the arrangement’s more familiar metalcore elements to make it one of the album’s most notable musical works.  Audiences who want even more new approaches and sounds get that in the distinctly death metal style ‘Take Your Pick.’  Considering that this song features a guest appearance by Cannibal Corpse front man Corpsgrinder, the comparison there is immediate.  To a slightly lesser degree, audiences can also make a comparison to works from the likes of Whitechapel.  From there on out, audiences get plenty of familiar sounds and styles in every song that follows.  At the same time, the songs still boast their own identities, even with that familiarity noted.  Keeping all of this in mind, the mix of new and familiar from one arrangement to the next and even within certain songs makes for reason enough for audiences to hear this record.  Of course, the musical arrangements featured in INK’s new album are collectively just one part of what makes this album worth hearing.  The movies that are represented throughout the record make for their own interest.

The movies that INK chose to represent in its latest album are important to note because unlike so many cinematic sequels, they are not just re-hashings of the material from the original.  From the singles already released so far, audiences know that classic movies, such as Pet Sematary, American Psycho, Child’s Play and Resident Evil are represented here.  Also represented are seemingly the likes of Cabin in the Woods (‘A Rash Decision’), The Fly (‘F.L.Y.’), and even Psycho (‘The Shower Scene’) among others.  Hellraiser is seemingly represented here in ‘The Box’ as is The Evil Dead in ‘Ex-Mortis.’  Simply put, between the movies listed here and the others featured here, INK has opted to not just re-visit the movies visited in the songs from The Silver Scream and its initial sequel/spinoff, The Silver Scream: The Final Cut.  What’s more, the band also made sure to pick movies from across the horror spectrum and history.  Not only does this serve as respect for those movies, but it could very well serve as a starting point for a lifelong love for (and potentially obsession with) those movies for new horror fans.  To that end, that and everything else noted here shows why the movies chosen for this record are important to the album’s success.  Even with this in mind, there is still one more item to address here.  That item is the record’s sequencing.

The sequencing of The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood is important because it ensures the album’s energy remains just right from start to end.  The album starts off in ominous fashion, but doesn’t wait long before it really picks up.  From there, the energy barely shifts at any point.  When it does, it is subtle at best.  The result is that it does just as much to keep listeners engaged and entertained throughout the album as its content and the very cinematic history presented through the featured movies.  Keeping all of this in mind, there is no doubt that the sequencing of INK’s new album is just as important to note as the album’s content.  It all comes together to make the album its own welcome musical love letter to Hollywood’s horror history just as much as its predecessors.

Ice Nine Kills’ recently released album, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrrorwood is another successful offering from the band.  It is a work that the band’s established and newer audiences alike will enjoy.  That is due in no small part to its featured musical arrangements.  The arrangements offer listeners a solid blend of familiar sounds and styles, and newer approaches.  The whole there makes for plenty of engagement and entertainment.  The movies that are represented throughout the album are of their own importance.  That is because they are not just repeats of the movies represented in the band’s most recent records.  They continue to show the band’s love for Hollywood’s rich history of horror while also continuing to potentially introduce audiences to that rich history.  The record’s sequencing rounds out its most important elements.  That is because it ensures that the record’s energy remains solid from start to end.  Each item noted is important in its own way to the whole of the album’s presentation.  All things considered, they make the album another successful offering from Ice Nine Kills and one more of this year’s top new hard rock and metal albums.

Ice Nine Kills Announces New Album Details; Premieres Album’s Lead Single, Video

Courtesy: Fearless Records

Ice Nine Kills will release another “sequel” to its hit 2018 album The Silver Scream this fall.

The band is scheduled to release its new album, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood Oct. 15 through Fearless Records. The band released the original album in 2018 and followed it up in 2019 with The Silver Scream: The Final Cut. Pre-orders are open for the band’s latest addition to its series of The Silver Scream albums.

Front man Spencher Charnas had the following to say of the forthcoming album:

“True to horror franchise tradition, there is always a sequel…”The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood” follows in the bloody footsteps of its predecessor, paying tribute to 13 more of the most gruesome tales to ever grace the silver screen. In this latest INK offering, the last album and video series is portrayed as a work of fiction. The new story line thrusts the band into a brutal “real world” slaying. The only traces of the crime are 13 songs left behind by the suspected killer…

The Silver Scream and The Silver Scream: The Final Cut produced the singles, ‘Thank God It’s Friday,’ ‘Stabbing in the Dark,’ ‘A Grave Mistake,‘ ‘The American Nightmare,’ ‘Savages,’ ‘Enjoy Your Slay‘ ‘A Grave Mistake,’ ‘Thank God It’s Friday,’ ‘Stabbing in the Dark‘ and a cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’

The band followed up that album with the release of its live recording, I Heard They Kill Live last year. The recording produced live performances of The Silver Scream‘s songs, ‘Rocking The Boat,’ and ‘Stabbing in the Dark.’

In anticipation of the release of The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood, Ice Nine Kills premiered the album’s lead single, ‘Hip to be Scared‘ and its video Friday. The song and its video were influenced by the 2000 Christian Bale horror flick American Psycho. The song presents the band’s more melodic side versus the more metalcore side exhibited in many of the band’s existing works. The video re-imagines scenes from American Psycho as front man Spencer Charnas and Papa Roach front man Jacoby Shaddix re-enact the scenes.

Courtesy: Fearless Records/SRO PR

The men of Ice Nine Kills are doing their part to help with recovery efforts from the fires that have devastated Australia.

The band is selling a new shirt whose sales will go to benefit those efforts.  A news release distributed Tuesday states that 100 percent of the shirts’ sales will benefit those recovery efforts.

Front man Spencer Charnas talked about the shirt’s sale in a statement featured in the release.

“Last month we were thrilled by the killer reception we received on our inaugural visit to Australia,” he said.  “In light of the recent events, we are donating all profits from this limited edition shirt to the Australian Wildfire Relief efforts.  Please consider picking one up and helping out our friends down under in this devastating time.”

The shirt is available for purchase at ink-merch.com.  According to information on the flyer for the shirt, this sale will run for only two days.

Ice Nine Kills has been busy touring in support of its recently re-issued album The Silver Scream (2018).  The band re-issued the album with five extra acoustic tracks on Oct. 25 through Fearless Records.  The group will continue its tour Feb 1 on the annual Shiprocked Cruise.

Once the cruise is done, the band will return to Europe to finish its run there before returning to the U.S. on April 10.  The band’s latest tour schedule is noted below. Tickets are available here.

Ice Nine Kills Unleashes ‘Merry Axe-Mas’ Video Game; Band To Continue Tour In 2020

Courtesy: Fearless Records

Ice Nine Kills is celebrating the holidays by giving its fans a very special gift.

The band has made available, the video game from the video for its single ‘Merry Axe-Mas.’  The band debuted the sing’es video Dec. 21, 2018. The single is taken from the band’s 2018 album The Silver Scream and is also featured on the album’s recent re-issue, subtitled The Final Cut.

The video game features three levels — Santa’s Forgiveness, Santa’s Forest and Silence The Sinners — through which Santa Claus wreaks some serious holiday havoc.  The video game and the song and video are all inspired by the controversial 1984 slasher flick Silent Night, Deadly Night, which is a favorite of INK front man Spencer Charnas.

Ice Nine Kills spent much of this year touring in support of its latest release The Silver Scream and its re-issue on the “Silver Scream World Tour” and “The Octane Accelerator Tour,” which was presented by Sirius XM.  The majority of the shows on that latter tour were sold out.

The band will continue its support of The Silver Scream well into the new year with a string of European dates in February and March.  That run will give way to another North American run that is scheduled to launch April 8 in Sunrise, FL and to run through May 20 in St. Paul, MN.  From there, the band will make its way to the United Kingdom for a brief stint there in late May.

Papa Roach, Five Finger Death Punch, I Prevail and Hollywood Undead will join the band on several dates.  The bands’ current tour schedule is noted below.  Tickets are available here.

INK’s ‘Silver Scream’ Re-Issue Is A Welcome Musical Reboot Of Its 2018 Album

Courtesy: Fearless Records

Ice Nine Kills has been in the news quite a bit lately.  The band debuted he video for its latest single ‘Savages’ this week, only a week after the band debuted its cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’  The band also announced recently, a new addition to its latest slate of live dates on Nov. 11 in Worcester, MA.  The band’s latest tour just launched Oct. 29 in Cleveland, OH and is scheduled to run through Dec. 1 in New York, NY.  All of these developments from the band are in support of the new re-issue of the band’s 2018 album The Silver Scream, The Silver Scream: Final Cut.  Released Oct. 25, this latest presentation of the band’s album is a step up from its source material.  That is due in part to the band’s cover of ‘Thriller,’ which is just one of six bonus tracks featured in the re-issue.  It is just one of the most notable of those songs, too, and will be discussed a little later.  The band’s fully acoustic performance of its own original ‘A Grave Mistake’ is yet another of the most notable of the re-issue’s additions.  It will be addressed shortly.  The record’s closer, which is a fully acoustic take of its original song ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ is notable in its own right, too.  It will also be discussed later.  All three songs noted here are important in their own way to the whole of the Silver Scream: Final Cut.  When they are considered along with the re-issue’s three other bonus tracks – an acoustic take of ‘Stabbing in the Dark,’ an acoustic take of ‘Savages’ and the previously unreleased tribute to Scream that is ‘Your Number’s Up’ – the whole of this record becomes a presentation that is one of the year’s top new music re-issues.

Ice Nine Kills’ new re-issue of its 2018 album The Silver Scream is one of this year’s top new album re-issues.  That is proven in part through the addition of the exclusive acoustic take of the band’s song ‘A Grave Mistake.’  Originally recorded earlier this year live on Sirius XM Radio, the song – which was inspired by the movie The Crow (which itself was inspired by the graphic novel of the same name) – develops its own new life and identity here.  That is due to the lack of the full on approach in the song’s electric take.  The decision to go only with the acoustic sound throughout gives the song a mournful feeling completely unlike that of its source material.  This is important to note because the full electric take does serve to illustrate the anger that Eric Draven felt when he came back to avenge his and his love’s murders.  This take though, touches more on the pain that led to that anger.  In turn, it gives the song (and story) even more depth than just the electric take by itself does.  To be honest, it actually is a better take than the song’s original, electric take because of this note, and will certainly become a favorite among the band’s audience base.  It is just one of the re-issue’s most notable works.  The band’s cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is another work that is sure to become a fan favorite.

‘Thriller’ stands out because while the band does pay homage to Michael Jackson’s timeless work in terms of the song’s arrangement, the group also gives the song its own new identity here, too.  If anything, the band’s arrangement here almost instantly lends itself to a comparison to Alien Ant Farm’s take of Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal.’  That is meant in the most complimentary way possible.  It is nice to hear the combination of that tribute with the band’s own sound.  The band even pays tribute to the late, great Vincent Price through the addition of that spoken word portion of the song.  Given, nothing can ever top Jackson’s original take on the song, but this adaptation is still a work that listeners in general will enjoy for its own merits.  It is just one more of the works that audiences will enjoy here.  The band’s acoustic take of its original ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ is yet another addition to the album’s re-issue that audiences will appreciate.

The band’s acoustic take of its original ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ stands out because of its own arrangement.  Whereas the song’s original, full electric take is in intense, driving work, the song’s acoustic take is a much more engaging work.  That is because the minimalist approach here actually adds to the song’s ominous sense.  That is not to say that the song’s original arrangement is not foreboding and ominous.  Quite the opposite is the case there.  What is meant here is that that ominous, foreboding tone completely changes here in a positive fashion.  The group’s vocal approach changes with the song’s instrumental elements and adds even more to that tone.  In an odd way, the coupling of the song’s vocal and instrumental elements here illustrates even more, the sadness of the victims and almost makes Jason’s anger and fury understandable and worthy of sympathy, considering his death was caused by the counselors.  The end result of those deep feelings – thanks to the arrangement in whole – is a fitting finale for The Silver Scream: Final Cut and one more reason that audiences will appreciate the record.  When it is considered along with the band’s cover of ‘Thriller,’ its take of its original ‘A Grave Mistake’ and the other three bonus tracks that round out the record’s bonus content, the whole of the record proves itself one more of this year’s top new album re-issues.

Ice Nine Kills’ re-issue of its 2018 album The Silver Scream is a presentation that the band’s most devoted audiences will appreciate just as much as its more casual listeners.  That is due primarily to the bonus content featured in the record.  The six previously unreleased tracks featured in this re-issue give new life (no pun intended) to some of the songs featured in the album’s original release while also giving another song – Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ – its own scary good new presentation.  Yes, that awful pun was intended.  When the bonus content featured in this record are considered with the originals from the album’s original release, the whole becomes a presentation that is one of the year’s top new album re-issues.  It is available now.  More information on The Silver Scream: Final Cut is available online along with all of Ice Nine Kills’ latest news and more at:

Courtesy: Fearless Records

Ice Nine Kills debuted two more tracks from the brand new re-issue of its 2018 album The Silver Scream this week.

The band debuted the acoustic take of Michael Jackson’s hit song ‘Thriller‘ Friday.  The song presents an amped up take on the classic song, which featured a guest appearance by the late, great Vincent Price.  While Price is not featured in this exclusive to the brand new re-issue of The Silver Scream, the band does pay homage to him as well.

‘Thriller’ is just the latest song to be released from the re-issue of The Silver Scream.  The band debuted Thursday, the acoustic take of ‘Thank God It’s Friday,’ which was featured in a much heavier version in the band’s 2018 album.  That performance features a guest appearance by Ari Lehamn, the actor who first portrayed Jason in the very first Friday The 13th movie way back in 1980.

Lehman talked about taking part in the song’s new recording in a recent interview.

“I am honored to be singing alongside the amazingly talented Spencer Charnas on this track,” he said.  “Ice Nine Kills will captivate you with their virtuoso sound and compelling lyrics.  ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ has Vorhees power!”

Ice Nine Kills front man Spencer Charnas said he was just as happy to have Lehman take part in the song’s new recording as Lehman was to take part.

Friday The 13th and Jason have always been an obsession for me,” he said.  “When I had the idea to reach out to Ari about singing on our acoustic tribute, I never expected in a million years for it to actually happen.  To find out that Ari was not only a fan of INK, but 100% willing to join us on the track, was a moment I won’t soon forget.  He brings such a rich authenticity to this song with his charismatic voice, and his involvement helps elevate the piece to another level.  To hear the FIRST Jason from arguably one of the most iconic scenes in horror history sing the line, ‘He drowned in all our sins’ evokes the same goosebumps I got when I first saw the film.”

The band’s new take on ‘Thank God It’s Friday’ and its cover of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ are just the latest singles to be released from the brand new re-issue of The Silver Scream.  The band debuted the video for its acoustic take of ‘Stabbing in the Dark‘ Oct. 4.  The song featured a guest performance by Trivium front man Matt Heafy.

This past April, the band performed an acoustic take of ‘A Grave Mistake‘ live on Sirius XM.  That performance is also featured in this recording.

The original 2018 release of The Silver Scream produced the singles and videos for ‘Thank God It’s Friday,’ ‘Stabbing in the Dark,’ ‘A Grave Mistake‘ and ‘The American Nightmare,’ ‘Savages,’ ‘Enjoy Your Slay‘ and ‘Merry Axe-mas.’

The full track listing for the new re-issue of The Silver Scream is noted below.

Ice Nine Kills Debuts Video for ‘Stabbing In The Dark’ Acoustic Take

Ice Nine Kills debuted the video for its acoustic take of ‘Stabbing in the Dark‘ this week.

The band debuted the video Friday for the song, which is featured on the upcoming re-issue of the band’s 2018 album The Silver Scream.  The video features a family watching the original video for ‘Stabbing in the Dark‘ on a black and white television in a very 1950s living room setting.

The acoustic take of ‘Stabbing in the Dark’ features guest vocals from Trivium front man Matt Heafy.  Heafy talked about joining Ice Nine Kills for the recording during a recent interview, saying how happy he was to take part in the song’s re-imagining.

“Ice Nine Kills is one of the absolute best bands on the planet right now,” he said.  “With their blend of styles and sounds and unique imagery, they’ve crafted a world entirely their own.  Being such a big fan myself, I did an acoustic cover of ‘Stabbing in the Dark’ on my Twitch live one day.  Next thing I knew, INK checked it out and dug it — which I was honored to hear.  I can’t wait till the world hears this newly re-imagined version of this incredible song.  Watch as INK takes the world over.  Mark my words.”

INK front man Spencer Charnas responded to Heafy’s comments with his own positive remarks in a separate interview.

“We were devilishly delighted to find out that Matt was a fan of INK,” he said.  “When we heard his chill-inducing cover of ‘Stabbing in the Dark’, we knew right then and there that we had to collaborate with him.”

He added, “We have enormous respect for Matt’s abilities, and are honored to have him be a part of this spooky, almost folk-like rendition of the song.  He slaughtered this performance, and we can’t wait wait for people to hear it during our favorite month of the year.”

INK’s acoustic take of ‘Stabbing in the Dark’ with Matt Heafy is just one of the acoustic works featured in the band’s upcoming re-issue of The Silver Scream.  The re-issue will also feature an acoustic performance of the song ‘A Grave Mistake,’ which the band recorded live on Sirius XM and a new take of ‘Thank God It’s Friday,’ which features the original Jason actor Ari Lehman.

The re-issue’s track listing is noted below.

THE SILVER SCREAM: FINAL CUT album will include the following track listing:

Ice Nine Kills Debuts ‘Savages’ Video; Announces New Live Dates

Ice Nine Kills debuted the video for its latest single this week.

The band debuted the video for its new single ‘Savages‘ Tuesday.  The song is taken from the band’s latest album The Silver Scream (2018).

The video features footage of the band performing its new single and crosses that footage with footage of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as the song was inspired by the movie.  It is just one of the movies that inspired the album’s works.  The album in whole is composed of songs inspired by famous horror movies, such as The ShiningJaws and It.

‘Savages’ is just the latest single from The Silver Scream to receive the video treatment. The album has also produced the singles ‘The American Nightmare,’ ‘Thank God It’s Friday,’ ‘Stabbing in the Dark,’ ‘A Grave Mistake‘ ‘Enjoy Your Slay‘ and ‘Merry Axe-mas.’

While the band debuted the video for its new single this week, it also recently launched a new campaign to promote the next single from its album, the It-inspired ‘IT Is The End.’  The campaign sent fans on a scavenger hunt to find a red balloon.  The first five people to reach each location in the hunt received special prizes and a sneak peek of the video, which is planned for its debut soon.
