Cardinals, Royals To Close Out Weekday Series Wednesday On ESPN2

Corutesy: ESPN

The St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals will face off live on ESPN2 Wednesday.

Wednesday’s game is the closer in the cross-conference rivals’ three-game series.  The Royals (22-32) opened the series Monday with a 4-1 win over St. Louis, who is fighting for a chance in the postseason.  The Royals sit last in the American League Central with no chance of making the postseason.

Coverage for the game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET.  Tom Hart will have the call for the game.  Jessica Mendoza and Kyle Peterson will provide additional commentary.

Danny Duff (3-4) is scheduled to start for Kansas City in Wednesday’s game.  His last time on the mound was Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers.  Milwaukee won the game 9-5, with Duffy taking the loss for the Royals.  He allowed six runs and six earned runs on seven hits; two walks and two home runs while striking out five batters over 3.2 innings.

Carlos Martinez (0-2) is scheduled to get the start for St. Louis.  His last time on the mound was Friday in the first of game of a double header against the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Cardinals won the game 6-5, with Alex Reyes credited with the win.

Martinez pitched 3.2 innings in the game, allowing five runs and one earned run on three hits.  He walked four batters and struck out one.

As of Tuesday, the Cardinals are second in the National League Central standings, ahead of Cincinnati, but only because it has three fewer losses than the Reds.  Cincinnati has two more wins than St. Louis.

Martinez’s struggles in his last appearance gives host Kansas City more hopes of picking up another win Wednesday.  At the same time, Kansas City has struggled just as much at home (11-13) this season as on the road (11-19).

St. Louis meanwhile has been only moderately successful in both its home and road record.  The Cardinals are 11-11 at home so far this season and 15-14 on the road, which means even more that Wednesday’s game (and this week’s series) could go to either team.

Additionally, each team is 6-4 in its last 10 games.  The series’ second game is tonight with first pitch scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.
