Next month PBS Kids will release its latest collection of episodes from its hit vocab building series Super Why.

PBS Kids and PBS Distribution will release the new Super Why DVD The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Other Fairytale Adventures on Tuesday, January 26th.  The latest addition to the show’s series of DVDs, this latest collection of episodes features four more stories lifted right from the series.  Those stories are: “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” “The Tortoise and The Hare,” “The Ugly Duckling,” and “The Elves and the Shoemaker.”  In the collection’s title story, the classic tale gets a little twist when the troll gets to tell his side of the story.  In turn, Red learns what she needs to say to her Grandmother, who won’t let her into the kitchen for a piece of red velvet cake.

In “The Tortoise and The Hare,” Princess Pea and Wonder Red team up for a potato sack race.  The problem is that they can’t agree on whether they need to go slow or fast in order to win the race.  So they join the Super Readers and jump into the story of the Tortoise and The Hare to learn the best way to proceed.

“The Ugly Duckling” gives its own twist on that classic fairytale. This episode teaches young viewers the importance of practice and determination. This lesson is taught as Princess Pea is preparing for her dance recital but can’t get some of her steps right. So she and the Super Readers jump into The Ugly Duckling. Instead of the classic story about the duckling turning into a swan as it grew, this take on the story sees the ugly duckling having trouble learning to swim. So it’s up to the Super Readers to help him learn how to swim. Princess Pea learns that just as the duckling learned by never giving up so can she perfect her dance moves for her recital by never giving up.

“The Elves and the Shoemaker” closes out this latest collection of Super Why episodes. Whyatt discovers in this episode that he has a secret admirer. As he tries to figure out who his secret admirer is, he and the Super Readers jump into the story of The Elves and the Shoemaker. The Super Readers discover in this story that the shoemaker has his own mystery to solve as he’s got some unidentified helpers. This helps Whyatt figure out how to solve the mystery of his own secret admirer.
